Benary s Award Winning Program rudbeckia hirta Denver DaiSY rudbeckia hirta Prairie
as the world s leading rudbeckia hirta breeder, Benary s accomplishments have been rewarded with numerous international awards. With a wide selection of heights, flower sizes, flower forms and colors, no other program offers so much: High versatility, long blooming season, and superior heat tolerance. rudbeckia from Benary are well known and proven performers. numerous awards around the world have been given to this long day plant. High quality seed, easy growing and versatility makes rudbeckia the perfect crop for growers, retailers and home gardeners. Compact Varieties MAyA Benary is proud to present maya, the world s first dwarf, double flowering rudbeckia. The compact habit of maya adds a new and interesting form to the wide assortment of Benary s rudbeckias. Fully double flowers abound on this durable summer garden performer. Strong stems hold the 4 (10 cm) bright yellow flowers upright. Plantings of maya resemble a bed of brightly colored tennis balls. Fleuroselect awarded maya the Gold medal for its outstanding field performance. maya also makes an excellent choice for a specimen plant in containers or mixed combination pots. 18 (45 cm) Summer: wks 18 (45 cm) SonoRA Sonora has an extraordinary color combination with a large mahogany ring on bright golden yellow petals. The very large flowers 5-6 (12-15 cm) and unique color of Sonora make it a great impulse item at the retail level and an instant winner in the garden. Sonora is a slightly larger plant than the Toto series but offers the same great variety of uses. 20 (50 cm) Summer: wks 20 (50 cm)
rudbeckia hirta Toto rustic Toto Compact, well branched and early flowering, the Toto trio is ideally suited for 4-5 pots. Toto Gold, Toto lemon and Toto rustic all received Fleuroselect Quality marks for their beautiful habit and abundant summer long flowering. The beautiful 2.4 (6 cm) round flowers of the Toto series make an excellent presentation in any planting. The three separate colors can also be found in the well balanced Toto mix. Toto rudbeckias are excellent choices for borders, combination containers, or specimen pots on the patio. Toto Gold Toto lemon Toto rustic Medium tall Varieties AuTuMn ColoRS The vivid play of fall colors bronze petals, red rings and rusty red centers creates an attractive contrast to the light yellow and golden yellow sister varieties in Benary s rudbeckia assortment. autumn ColorS is well suited for use as a classic bedding plant. in the landscape, the 6 (15 cm) flowers of autumn ColorS mix work well with other bedding plants or ornamental grasses. 22 (55 cm) 22 (55 cm)
DEnVER DAISy Denver DaiSY is a symbol of city-wide beautification for the historic 150th anniversary of the city of Denver. rudbeckia Denver DaiSY was selected because of its extreme heat tolerance, its summer-long flower power, and its ability to stand up under the extreme weather variations in the mile-high city. Growers will love this rudbeckia because of its high germination rates and high percentage of usable seedlings. low cultural inputs and short crop times ensure that Denver DaiSY will perform in a wide array of greenhouse situations (50-70 cm) tall, Denver DaiSY is perfect for 1.0 gallon production, or for large landscape plantings. Flower power is no understatement for this beauty as large masses of golden flowers adorned with rusty red rings cover Denver DaiSY from late spring until first frost. Strong, dense flower stems ensure that Denver DaiSY will not flop or fall over in adverse weather conditions. Denver DaiSY is the embodiment of the true pioneering spirit of the american West. its raw beauty and ability to thrive in very diverse and rugged areas makes it a perfect fit for the entire country. rudbeckia hirta Denver DaiSY arrangement (50-70 cm) (50-70 cm) PRAIRIE Prairie has very large 6.4 (16 cm) flowers with light yellow tips on golden petals that encircle a green center. This variety looked so bright and sunny in more than 70 Fleuroselect and all american Selections field trials that judges ruled Prairie a winner in north america and europe. Prairie s unique color combination and sturdy habit make this variety a winner in any garden location. 30 (75 cm) 30 (75 cm)
Rudbeckia Research: Exploring Flower Initiation and Crop Habit research on Benary s rudbeckia varieties has shown how day length manipulation can be utilized to achieve optimum plant quality and minimize crop times: Plants that receive 10 hours of light do not initiate flowering but form rosettes. Plants that receive 14 hours of light initiate flowers and have stem lengths characteristic to the varieties natural height. For growers looking to produce compact plants without the use of plant growth regulators, light manipulation can be an effective tool. 6 Rudbeckia hirta Technical Information uses: annual Plants for border, pot and container plants, cut flower production exposure: Full sun Garden height: / cm Crop time: Plug crop: 288 tray 5-6 weeks; 128 tray 6-7 weeks. Flowering pots: weeks depending on species and on the season. long days and high light will shorten the production time. Spring: Toto, Sonora, maya: ø 15 weeks, Denver Daisy: weeks, Prairie, autumn ColorS: weeks; Summer: Toto, Sonora, maya: weeks, Denver DaiSY: weeks, Prairie, autumn ColorS: weeks Seed form: Seed Sowing method: 1-2 seeds per plug, can be sown directly into final pot. Germination: Stage i and ii: days at F / C, Stage iii and iv: days at F / C requires light for germination. Before sowing treat substrate with fungicide. Cover seed lightly with vermiculite after sowing. avoid direct sunlight by shading seeds after sowing. Sowing media: media with very low soluble salt levels; ph: Keep soil slightly moist but not wet. Plug culture: media should be slightly less than saturated in Stage i. From Stage ii reduce the soil moisture, but the plug should not dry out. Do not let soluble salt level rise above 0,75 ec. The roots are sensitive to high salt levels in substrate. Start fertilization at ppm nitrogen in a well balanced formula. During Stage iii and Stage iv fertilization levels can be increased to 150 ppm. Growing on: if broad casting the seeds into open flats 3-4 weeks after germination transplant 1 plant per cell into plug trays (1x1 / 3x3 cm) or per pot (2-3 / 6-8 cm) and 5-6 weeks later transplant 1-3 plants into a larger pot (4-7 / cm) or into a container (3-5 l). Plant cut flowers (frost free) in x 12- / x cm space. Media: use a well-drained, growing substrate with % clay, 1-1,5 kg/m³ complete balanced fertilizer, 0-2 kg/m³ slow release fertilizer (3-6 months), iron-chelate, micronutrients, ph: Field: loamy sandy to sandy humus soils with good drainage and good nutrition levels. Standard fertilization: g/m 2 of a slow release fertilizer. Temperature: Grow at F / C. rudbeckia hirta needs warm temperatures for the growth. Temperatures of 61 F / 16 C increase the cultivation time by 3 weeks. Temperatures below 61 F / 16 C can be a cause for red coloring of leaves. rudbeckia hirta does not tolerate frost. Fertilization: moderate fertilization levels are required. Fertilize the crop weekly with ppm nitrogen (at 0 kg/m³ slow release fertilizer in substrate), using a potassium balanced fertilizer (n: K 2 o-ratio: 1:1,5). avoid high ammonium and high nitrogen levels. Prevent magnesium deficiency by applying magnesium sulphate (0,05 %) 1-2 times and in case of iron deficiency (above ph 6.0) apply iron-chelate 1-2 times. Field: Take care of possible iron deficiency and apply iron-chelate1-2 times. n min soil value: approximately 130 g n/m². Light: long day plant. For flower initiation long days greater than 13 hr. are required. We recommend somewhere between hrs. for best results. Flowering initiation is well timed 2 weeks (Toto, Sonora and maya) or 4 weeks (Denver DaiSY, Prairie and Denver DaiSY) after transplantation. Keep light level high, because high light levels improve the plant quality and prevents excessive stem elongation. in winter and in early spring additional assimilation light is required for pot plant and cut flower production. night interruption is possible. a short day period can be used to control the plant growth. 2-5 weeks after transplantation cultivate at short day (10 hr.) conditions for 7-10 days for a compact plant growth. afterwards return to long day conditions (14-16 hrs.) again. For Toto in 4 / 9 cm pot extend the cultivation of short days to 6-7 weeks until the end of cultivation. Plant Growth Regulators: Seedlings are very responsive to sprays with B-nine (daminozide) at 2,500-5,000 ppm. Bonzi (paclobutrazol) sprays can also be used at ppm. light drenches at 1-2 ppm can be used on plants that are well established in the final containers. Sumagic (uniconazol) can also be used. Due to differences in locations produced trial applications are recommended. Contact a Benary representative for exact recommendations. Cultural hints: Keep humidity low and provide good ventilation. avoid over watering and drought stress. Drought stress can be a cause for necrosis of leaf edges. avoid over head irrigation and avoid late day watering to reduce the risk of Botrytis, especially at cooler growing conditions. The cultural recommendations are based on results from trials conducted under Central european conditions. Different conditions in other parts of the world may lead to deviations in results achieved.
