8 Cultivation information SUNDAVILLE MANDEVILLE HYBRIDS Flowering characteristics As a rule, Sundaville flowers are formed at the axil of every third leaf. No flowers are formed in the axils of the first and second leaves. After the flower from the axil of the third leaf, two more leaves form without a flower. Then another flower grows from the next (third) axil, and so on. Several blooms form racemes of flowers. The habit is climbing and winding, always in an anti-clockwise direction. Pinching stimulates the branching of the plant. When pinching in the months before delivery, pinch immediately above a flower bud in order to prevent flower abortion. Flower buds can drop when conditions are not favourable, e.g. low light, excess water or excessive vegetative growth. Development from visible tiny bud to first coloured flower takes approximately a month at temperatures around 20 C. Growing schedule The growing schedule depends largely on the chosen pot size and variety. Sundaville is available in four different types: Classic, Beauty, Grand and Cosmos. Keep these types separate in your growing schedule, as the schedule differs from type to type. Plant shapes a) Trellis: The most widely grown Sundaville is a 17 cm pot plant with a trellis. Pot in June-July for sale in April-May of the following year. Plants can also be potted earlier or later, depending on pot size, plant size and the area used for cultivation. Pinch after a few weeks, but not until the plant clearly shows new growth. Train the growing shoots through the trellis to produce a nice, full plant. Various pot sizes, heights and styles of trellis are possible. Horizontal shoots always bear more flowers. Several pinches will improve branching and give fuller plants. A compact plant in a 10 cm pot does not need to be tied, but cultivation will require additional technical expertise. b) Hanging basket: When planting hanging baskets, use 2, 3 or more cuttings per basket. The cultivation period is similar to that for a Sundaville grown on a trellis. Pinch the plant and train the shoots horizontally to obtain a nice, full plant. Alternatively, to save space, plant in autumn in a cm pot. This half-grown product should then be transplanted into hanging baskets in the spring. Half-grown plants can also be bought in. c) cm pots: When potting in autumn or in January, sales can take place in April-May-June. Keep the plant compact using growth regulators. Cuttings Start with certified clean cuttings from an official Moerheim New Plant supplier. Potting compost Use a good-quality potting compost. Sundaville grows best at an unusually low ph of Potting Be careful not to use an oversized pot as this will encourage excessive vegetative growth. Climate Temperature: after potting, a high temperature of around C is needed for a few weeks. In general, the plants and flowers thrive on warmth. In winter, lower temperatures down to 13 C are not a problem. However, low temperatures for extended periods are not recommended. Air humidity (RH): high humidity can cause Botrytis, especially in the winter when growing temperatures are lower. Shade: the Classic type needs very little shade. Pretty and Cosmos types can be shaded from excessive sun if conditions require. Excessive sun in summer can stop flowering in Beauty and Cosmos types. Watering Keep the growing medium moderately moist and in the winter on the dry side to avoid root rot. To obtain a compact plant, avoid over-watering. Sundaville has relatively low water needs. Feeding When watering, feed continuously with a well-balanced mixture containing all necessary nutrients, 1.5 g/litre (= an EC of 1.5 ms). Make sure plants receive sufficient magnesium. More information on feeding is available from Moerheim New Plant on request. Keeping the plants compact Use growth regulators carefully ml/l of Cycocel is effective. Stop well before delivery because growth regulation can produce small flowers. Too much water stimulates long shoots with long internodes. Crop protection Sundaville is a sturdy plant which is fairly resistant to pests. Beauty and Cosmos types are more susceptible. Pests: watch out for aphids, whitefly, cyclamen mite, spider mite and thrips. Fusarium oxysporum: is a vascular disease that can lead to wilting of the plant. Hygiene, during pinching for example, is important in order to prevent it from spreading. Leaf spot: avoid leaf spot by keeping the leaves dry and by using a fungicide occasionally.
