Since the early 2000s, Sakata Seed Corporation has had an agreement with the Republic of Indonesia regarding the development of SunPatiens. The genetic resources Sakata used to develop SunPatiens are native to Indonesia. Sakata honors an ethical commitment to work with the Indonesian government on research and development of this amazing flower in accordance with principles of the Convention on Biological Diversity. This cooperative effort has resulted in the commercialization of one of the most successful introductions ever. In addition, it is a model program for the development of indigenous plants worldwide. Sakata shares a portion of the royalty proceeds with the Indonesian government for use in the conservation and sustainability of its biological diversity.
