Wade & Gatton Nurseries 3 PRUNUS - THE CHERRIES A family of ornamental trees, very highly valued because of their leaf color and showy flowers, and a few bush form shrubs that also have special flower characteristics. They all require good soil drainage. Prunus cistena, PURPLE LEAF SAND CHERRY (7-14 tall x 7-10 spread') Alternate, simple leaves are intense reddish-purple all summer long. Single, pinkish fragrant flowers emerge after leaves followed by small blackish fruit. This deciduous bush has a moderate growth rate with a rounded growth habit. Wade & Gatton Nurseries 7 Prunus virginiana Shubert, CANADA RED CHERRY (25 tall x 20 spread') Also known as Common Chokeberry. It is a hardy pyramidal deciduous tree with foliage that emerges green but turns reddish purple with age. It has clusters of white flowers in the spring. The fruit are red at first but turn black with maturity. In the fall it turns orange and red. Fast growing, straight trunked tree. Annual growth of 12-18 per year. Zone 2. Note: Very hardy, can tolerate sub-zero temperatures. We have observed them growing in Wawa, Ontario, Canada.
