First Editions is a premium collection of shrubs, trees, evergreens, vines, and perennials with outstanding consumer and landscape performance. First Editions plants are trialed and selected for one or more of the following features: flowers colorful foliage ornamental or edible fruit fragrance interesting bark improved habit wildlife benefits adaptability In a few cases, we ve included varieties that are outstanding replacements for important commodity crops troubled by pest problems. Beyond that, First Editions is notable because it includes regional product assortments. With plants that excel in colder climates, plants that thrive in much warmer regions, and plants that do well in between, you can tailor your offer based on your market s climate and your customer s tastes. With attractive packaging, a vigorous national marketing campaign and thoughtful brand requirements, you can be confident making First Editions your first choice for a branded woody plant program. 1. 3 Berberis thunbergii BailErin PPAF Limoncello Barberry Forming a tidy, round mound, this new barberry has striking chartreuse foliage with an unusual red, almost dotted, pattern around the margin. The fall foliage is orange, yellow and red. The small size and habit make it perfect as an accent plant in foundation plantings. Bred by Don Selinger, Bailey Nurseries, Inc. ZONE 4-7 H x W 3-4' x 3-4' Berberis thunbergii BailJullia PPAF Toscana Barberry The large showy foliage emerges red in spring with a fine, bright yellow margin. The margin eventually fades through summer but the foliage remains red. The red color darkens in autumn, taking on burgundy tones. Forms an upright shrub, with arching branches. Bred by Don Selinger, Bailey Nurseries, Inc. ZONE 4-7 H x W 3-5' x 2-4'
Buddleia davidii PIIBD-I PPAF Groovy Grape Butterfly Bush Rounded to upright habit with arching 8-10" long inflorescences. Rich, violet-purple flowers are fragrant. Flowering continues into fall when deadheaded. Great butterfly and bee pasture. Easily rejuvenated by moderate to severe pruning to 12" from ground. Dies back in Zone 5 like most Buddleia. Not sterile. Bred by Plant Introductions, Inc. ZONE 5-9 H x W 8-10' x 6-8' Buddleia davidii PIIBD-II PPAF Funky Fuchsia Butterfly Bush Rounded to upright habit with dark green foliage, gray beneath. The habit is more upright than Miss Molly and Miss Ruby. Rich reddish-pink inflorescences are very upright and quite fragrant. Flowers average 6-8" long and up to 10" long on vigorous shoots. Flowering continues into fall when deadheaded providing butterflies with a long lasting smorgasbord. Easily rejuvenated by moderate to severe pruning to 12" from ground. Dies back in Zone 5 like most Buddleia. Not sterile. Bred by Plant Introductions, Inc. ZONE 5-9 H x W 6-8' x 6-8' Buddleia davidii PIIBD-III PPAF Psychedelic Sky Butterfly Bush Well matched with Funky Fuchsia in habit and flower display, Psychedelic Sky has clear blue flowers on upright stems. Flowers average 6-8" long and up to 10" long on vigorous shoots. The habit is upright and tidy, like Funky Fuchsia. Flowering continues into fall when deadheaded, offering a long season of pollen and nectar for bees and butterflies. Easily rejuvenated by moderate to severe pruning to 12" from the ground. Dies back in Zone 5 like most Buddleia. Not sterile. Bred by Plant Introductions, Inc. ZONE 5-9 H x W 3-4' x 4-5'
Distylium PIIDIST-III PPAF Distylium racemosum x D. myricoides Coppertone Distylium A mid-sized spreading to rounded evergreen with copperyred new foliage that matures to blue-green. Petite red flowers appear in the winter. Full sun to moderate shade; any well drained soil on the acid side; tolerates drought, heat, wet soil and displays exceptional resistance to disease and insects. This adaptable plant is a good alternative for boxwood, cherry laurel, holly and juniper. Bred by Plant Introductions, Inc. ZONE 7-9 H x W 4' x 5' Distylium PIIDIST-IV PPAF Distylium racemosum x D. myricoides Linebacker Distylium This compact, upright evergreen assumes the shape of a white oak whiskey barrel in youth and matures into an excellent screening and hedge plant. Reddish new growth matures to lustrous dark green and remains dark green through winter with no discoloration. No flowers to date, but based on the species they should be reddish maroon in late winter early spring. ZONE 6b-9 H x W 8-10' x 6-8'
Hypericum inodorum Kolmamoc PPAF Mocca Hypericum Combine the classic, bright yellow spring flowers that are the hallmark of the species with the beautiful, warm, brown-red berries appearing just in time for the fall season and you have Mocca. A perfect complement to the garden spring through fall, with berries that are perfectly suited for fall bouquets. ZONE 5-9 H x W 30-36" x 36" Hypericum inodorum Kolmaref PPAF Red Fame Hypericum Bright yellow spring flowers are followed by even brighter, long lasting, fire engine red berries that pair perfectly with autumn s oranges, maroons and yellows. Berries also show well against dark green foliage in late summer to early fall. ZONE 5-9 H x W 30-36' x 30-36' Vitex agnus-castus PIIVAC-I PPAF Delta Blues Chastetree Compact rounded to upright-spreading habit with fine textured foliage and stems; not as coarse as the old behemoth cultivars like Shoal Creek. Dark green fragrant foliage, resistant to fungal leaf spot; largely insect resistant; foliage is smaller and nodes shorter creating a much more dense plant in the container and landscape. Dark bluish-purple flowers borne on densely branched inflorescences create an impressive floral display. The fragrant flowers are attractive to butterflies, bees and hummingbirds. Vitex honey is highly prized. Flowers develop on new growth so pruning stimulates increased flowering. Blooms from June October in zone 7 8. A die back shrub in Chicago but flowers form on new growth like Buddleia. Fruits are small, shiny, reddish drupes borne in great abundance; can be used for cuts and bouquets. Vitex agnus-castus is well adapted to acid and alkaline soils as long as the site is well drained. Displays high salt tolerance. Deer resistant. Bred by Plant Introductions, Inc. ZONE 6-9 H x W 8-10' x 8-10'
Rosa CA29 PPAF Campfire Rose An exciting rose from the Canadian Artist Rose series, Campfire has exceptional hardiness combined with eyecatching blooms and bright glossy foliage. Shapely buds with yellow and red tones open to semi-double flowers of yellow, edged in a deep rosy pink. As the season progresses, the pink edging becomes more prominent and produces an incredible smoldering blend of yellow and deep pink blooms that continue until frost. Dark green glossy foliage has excellent disease resistance; stems are smooth with only occasional short thorns. Campfire s luminescent blooms on a compact shrub will light up a landscape. Named in honor of Tom Thomson, one of the foremost artists in Canadian history. ZONE 3-7 H x W 3' x 3' Betula platyphylla Jefpark PPAF Parkland Pillar Birch Parkland Pillar is a selection of Dakota Pinnacle discovered at Parkland Nursery in Alberta and introduced by Jeffries Nurseries. Parkland Pillar is much more narrow, upright, and dense in habit. Known to be a fast growing variety that is perfectly suited as a garden specimen or for screening or boulevards. Tolerant of heat, drought, and alkaline soils, Parkland Pillar s adaptability and conical shape makes it an excellent choice for the urban landscape. ZONE 3-7 H x W 40' x 6-7'
