Perfectly pretty pink flowers on a deutzia. A shower of elegant pink flowers creates a carpet of color. Great for mass plantings because of its neat, mounded habit and burgundy-purple fall color, this tough, adaptable plant makes an excellent groundcover, especially on a sunny slope. Top three reasons to plant Yuki Cherry Blossom Deutzia: Pink, bell-like flowers cover the plant in spring Loves sun and resists deer Excellent groundcover, and works especially well on slopes Height: Zone: 5 Blooms on: Old Wood Pruning: seldom needed, but may be shaped immediately after flowering. Fertilize in the spring.
Dwarf evergreens look great year round, and fill a void in many landscapes. This bright golden evergreen ball is like a yellow 'Danica', but with looser foliage and a more block-like habit. Developed in Canada, it has good burn-resistance and holds its color nicely in winter. Slow Grower Height: 1 x1 Zone 3 Pruning: Early Summer
Dwarf Alberta Spruce are extremely popular in residential landscapes - maybe too popular. Here's an easy-to-grow alternative with the same desirable size and habit, plus brighter color. It's perfect for flanking formal entryways, either in the ground or in large containers. Slow Grower Height: 6 x8 Zone 3 Pruning: Early Summer
This super-hardy abelia has rich fragrance and dark, reddish-pink flower buds. The spicy sweet blooms adorn this plant from late May to early June, and the glossy summer foliage turns an attractive orange-red in autumn. Sweet Emotion is a knockout landscape plant for both the North and the South, and will thrive in areas that are too cold for other abelias. Height: 5 Spread: 5 Shape: Upright Foliage: Orange red in Autumn Exposure: Full Sun Zone: 4-9 Rosy pink summer flowers often rebloom. Rich dark purple foliage all summer. Season long color. Deer resistant. Attracts hummingbirds. Height: 3-5' Spread: 3-6' Shape: Upright Foliage: Purple Exposure: Full Sun Zone: 4-8
Same as the red but a pearl color A new, improved calycanthus with large, bright red magnolia-like flowers. Unlike 'Hartlage Wine' it is very fragrant. This rebloomer has nice, glossy foliage, too. Height: 4-5' Spread: 4-5' Shape: Upright Exposure: Full Sun Zone: 4-8 Height: 5 Spread: 6 Exposure: Full Sun Fragrant Zone: 5
Just like her sisters, 'Miss Molly' and 'Miss Ruby', 'Miss Violet' is a compact plant with vibrant flower color. 'Miss Violet has loads of dark purple-violet summer flowers. Height: 4 Spread: 4' Shape: Upright Foliage: Medium Exposure: Full Sun Zone: 5-9 This is a humdinger of a weigela! Sonic Bloom weigelas have the strongest rebloom of any weigela, flowering in May and then producing waves of reblooms until frost. The lipstick red flowers of Sonic Bloom Red add season-long drama to gardens. Deadheading is not needed to keep the plant blooming. Height: 4-5' Spread: 4-5' Shape: Upright Exposure: Full Sun Zone: 4-8
With its fragrant spring blooms and attractive habit, this compact Korean Spice viburnum is a great addition to gardens. Stronger growing than other compact varieties, it's a great choice for smaller landscapes, providing all of the spicy, intoxicating spring fragrance of traditional Korean Spice in a petite package. Height: Width: Blooms on: Can be trimmed after flowering Zone 4 Fragrant flowers are a rich Sangria-red color. Red color may be more pronounced in the South. This compact plant is smaller than many other buddleia varieties, and its distinctive flower color makes late summer gardens pop! Bloom time July. Height: 4 Spread: 4 Shape: Upright Foliage: Medium Exposure: Full Sun Zone: 5-9
Bright golden foliage with red new growth. A great vertical plant for formal landscapes. Little care is needed. Interesting columnar habit. Deer resistant. Resistant to sunburn. This is an easy way to add both vertical lines and bright color to your home landscape Bright orange-red autumn foliage is stunning. Proven to be burn resistant in side by side tests with other yellow leaved barberry. Use Gold Pillar as a low-maintenance hedge or edging plant, or add it to a border as an specimen plant. Height: 3 x 1.5 Zone: 4 Deer Resistant Bloomerang lilacs are two-timers - and that's a wonderful thing! They bloom in spring like traditional lilacs, then rebloom from mid-summer through fall. Dark Purple is bigger than the original Bloomerang Purple lilac, and has larger, more rounded inflorescenses. This is a strong grower, and will add beauty and fragrance to gardens from spring to fall. May be trimmed after spring bloom. Height: 4 Spread: 4' Shape: Upright Foliage: Medium Exposure: Full Sun Zone: 3
The newest rebloomer in the best selling series, Bloomerang 'Pink Perfume' has the same bloom pattern, flowering abundantly in spring and then agin in mid-summer through frost. This mildew-resistant variety has a compact growth habit and elegant, small leaves that make it the perfect shrub for smaller landscapes and gardens. May be trimmed after spring bloom. Height: 4 Spread: 4' Shape: Upright Foliage: Medium Exposure: Full Sun Zone: 3 Unusual orange color! Bright and cheery, this new barberry has tangy orange foliage that is often accented by a distinctive chartreuse margin. Stronger growing than other variegated cultivars, it is colorful in the landscape from spring to fall. Certified Wheat-rust resistant. Height: 4 x 4 Zone: 4 Deer Resistant
Named because it shares the colors of the Polish flag, 'Viva Polonia' is a cheerful, easy growing, large flowered clematis. Red flowers are accented with a white star. Flowers abundantly in early summer on old wood, and blooms continue to appear through the season on new wood. Prune back to 3 in early Spring. Height: 34-6 Spread: 3-5 Exposure: Full Sun Zone: 4-9 Blooms time: Early Mid Summer Laced Up elderberry, an amazing narrow, upright variety that takes up only a few square feet of ground. Feathery black foliage covers broomstick-straight stems that shoot toward the sky but stay in a narrow column. Early summer brings hundreds of pink flowers to contrast with the leaves. It's an exotic looking plant that's surprisingly hardy and easy to grow! Columnar habit takes up far less space than other elderberries Elegant, feathery black foliage provides unmatched color and texture Pink flowers in early summer Height: 4x6 Spread: 3x4 Zone 4
Tiger Eyes is a beautiful golden-leafed form of cutleaf staghorn sumac. New growth is a lively chartreuse green, quickly changing to yellow, both colors contrasting nicely with the rosy-pink leaf stems. The branches angle upward while the deeply cut leaflets drape downward, giving it a rather oriental look. As magnificent as the summer colors are, the dramatic effect of yellow, orange and intense scarlet in autumn are unparalleled Gold Medal Plant Award winner. C Height 6 Spread 6 Fall color: Yellow, orange, scarlet Zone: 4-8 Wouldn't it be great if Sweet Autumn clematis flowered sooner and longer and came in other colors? Now it does! 'Sweet Summer Love' gives you everything you want: the flowers, the fragrance, the ease of growth and cranberry-violet blooms that start over a month earlier than others. This breakthrough vine is from award-winning clematis breeder Szczepan Marczyski of Poland. It will add lots of drama to gardens when trained up a trellis or other support. Bloom time July. Height: 18 Spread: 6 Exposure: Full Sun Zone: 4-9 Blooms on: New Wood = prune in early spring
Winecraft Black is the first Proven Winners smokebush, so you know it must be special. In spring, round leaves emerge rich purple but as summer's heat comes on, they turn a deep near-black tone and finally light up in an array of reds and oranges in fall. In early summer, large, soft panicles of bloom appear that become the misty "smoke" that makes this such a popular landscape plant. Unlike other smokebush, it naturally has a rounded, dwarf habit which means that finally, every landscape has room for this unique plant. Height: 4-6 Spread: 4-6 Shape: Mounded Foliage Shade: Purple-Black Red Exposure: Full Sun Zone: 4-8 It's a colorful, shaggy mound of gold threads with colorful reddish new growth. The foliage is more deeply cut than 'Sutherland Gold' or Black Lace resulting in a compact irregular mound with extremely fine texture. White spring flowers produce red fruit in fall. Will tolerate full sun in northern climates. Height: 4x6 Zone 4
BLACK LACE is a stunning development in Elderberry breeding. Intense purple black foliage is finely cut, giving it an effect similar to that of Japanese maple. Indeed, some designers are using it in place of the more sensitive acer varieties since BLACK LACE is extremely durable and adaptable. Creamy pink flowers in spring contrast nicely with the dark leaves. They are followed by blackish red fall berries which can be harvested for making elderberry wine and jam, or left on the plant to attract birds and other wildlife. BLACK LACE is very cold hardy and easy to grow, and adaptable to most sites. Full sun is needed for the best color. It can be used as a dramatic accent plant, planted en masse for a trouble free high hedge, or incorporated into the mixed or perennial border. Left alone it will reach up to 8 feet in height, but BLACK LACE can also be pruned back each year to fit into more formal settings. Bloom time early Summer. Height: 4x6 Zone 4 After years of testing, it proved to be a beautiful, neat growing shrub with superb hardiness and sunburn resistance. Blondy is a colorful evergreen that looks great all year long. It stays nicely mounded and doesnt sprawl like other euonymus. Bold dark green and bright yellow evergreen foliage. Bright yellow stems. Tidy, mounded habit. Low maintenance. Height: Spread: Shape: Mounded Foliage Shade: Variegated Exposure: Full Sun Zone: 5-9
Cold climate gardeners, rejoice: there's finally a purple hydrangea for you! Top reasons to grow Invincibelle Mini Mauvette hydrangea: 1. Blooms ever year, even in chilly USDA zone Strong stems hold the beautiful, unique pink-mauve blooms upright all season. 3. Dwarf habit makes it perfect for any sized landscape. 4. Long Blooming 5. Continuous Bloom or Rebloomer 6. Deadheading Not Necessary 7. Native to North America Height: 3 Zone 3 Pruning: Early Spring Proud Berry coralberry makes it unbelievably easy to fill your landscape with these unique pink berries, guaranteed to turn heads. Cute, rounded, bluish-green leaves look handsome all season, then, in late summer, bell-shaped flowers appear. As the season changes to autumn, the flowers develop into large dark pink berries, the color intensifying with cold weather. As pretty as it is, this North American native is also amazingly tough, effortlessly fending off deer, cold weather, and problem soils. The fruit is not edible, but may be eaten by birds in mid-late winter. This plant makes an excellent cut flower for fall arrangements. Height: 3-4 Spacing 3-4 Zone 3
Maintenance Notes: We recommend a minimum of six hours of sun for Invincibelle Mini Mauvette for the strongest stems and most abundant, most colorful blooms. In hot climates, afternoon shade is okay, but we still recommend a few hours of morning sun or filtered light through the day for best results. Smooth hydrangeas like Invinicbelle Mini Mauvette should be pruned in early in spring, just as the new growth begins to emerge on the stems. Cut the entire plant back by about one-third its total height. This serves to build up a strong woody base while also encouraging vigorous new growth with lots of flowers. Mulch is always a good idea with hydrangeas - apply a 2-3" (5-7.6 cm) thick layer over the entire root zone to conserve moisture and keep the shallow roots growing vigorously. Fertilize, if desired, in early spring, after the ground has thawed but before new growth begins. Elegant and distinctive, schizophragma is a great choice for gardeners who want something a little different in their landscapes. This is a showier variety with larger deeper pink sepals in June and July. It's a great addition to woodland settings or trained up a north facing wall. Height: up to 40 Spacing 7-9 Blooms on: old wood Zone 5
The dark burgundy red flower buds of Invincibelle Ruby open to a two-toned combination of bright ruby red and silvery pink. The foliage is extra dark and stems are strong, making this new hydrangea a gem in any garden. It is a strong rebloomer that will be an excellent addition to any garden. Like other smooth hydrangeas, it flowers on new growth and so blooms every year without fail. Ginger Wine ninebark expands the color palette for these easy care, native flowering shrubs. Spring foliage emerges a sunny orange color and matures to sparkling burgundy. Clusters of white flowers cover the plant in late spring, and these age to attractive red seed heads. Bloom time early Summer. Height: 2-3 Width: 2-3 Zone: 3 Blooms on: New Wood Pruning: Early Spring Height: 5 x 6 Blooms on: better on old wood, Prune right after flowering Zone 3
Colorful and easy care, ninebarks are a go-to plant for any sunny spot. What sets Festivus Gold ninebark apart from the rest of the pack, though, is its semi-dwarf habit and bright yellow foliage. Even in full sun, the foliage stays bright and cheery and free from the fungal diseases that plague other varieties. In spring, the entire plant in engulfed in white flower clusters. Bloom time early Summer. Height: 3 x 4 Blooms on: better on old wood, Prune right after flowering Zone 3 The second generation of Invincibelle Spirit hydrangea delivers on all accounts: it has darker foliage, stiffer stems, and larger flowers that are a richer pink that ages to an attractive green. This hydrangea grows from Manitoba to Mobile, blooming every year from mid-summer to frost. It is a strong rebloomer, and will deliver plenty of rich pink flowers through the summer and into fall. As with the original Invincibelle Spirit hydrangea, $1 from every plant sold will be donated to the Breast Cancer Research Center. BCRF is dedicated to preventing breast cancer and finding a cure in our lifetime by funding clinical and translational research worldwide. Height: 3 x 3 Zone: 3 Blooms on: New Wood Pruning: Early Spring
. Cherry Explosion likes protection from the hot afternoon sun. When grown in acid soils, the flower color is lavender. When this plant dies back over winter, it rebounds beautifully with each stem flowering beautifully on new wood. Mature growth is 3-4' high and wide. Best to be planted in zones 4-9 Height: 36 x 36 Blooms on: New wood Zone 4-9 Pruning: Early Spring Bloom Time: June September Tiny Wine is extra bushy, with small, refined leaves. The dark bronze-maroon foliage is colorful all season, and contrasts beautifully with the white flowers in late spring. The flower show is exceptional, with dainty flowers blooming up and down the stem in a very showy display. This durable plant may be used in the landscape for season-long color, and is also a great choice for patio containers. Bloom time early Summer. Height: 3-4 Width: 3-4 Blooms on: better on old wood, Prune right after flowering Zone 3
Hydrangeas: True Blue or Tickled Pink? There are very few plants that you, the gardener, can actually choose the color you want them to be in your garden. Hydrangeas happen to be one of them. With some simple amendments to our soil, you can choose between making the blooms blue or pink. And while it doesn't happen overnight, the magical blooms are well worth the wait! The most important thing that influences the color of hydrangeas is soil ph that's the level of soil acidity. That means you may want to start with a soil test. You can either get a soil test kit from your favorite garden center or you can send your soil to your local cooperative extension office. An exciting improvement to Ninebark, Summer Wine. Smaller than other ninebark varieties, SUMMER WINE is an easy way to introduce wine colored foliage into the home garden. It is fast growing and has few, if any, pest problems. Its graceful, arching habit makes if very appealing in the landscape. It adds beautiful color and vibrancy to your garden, especially in spring. In early June it blooms with white button-like flowers that accent the leaves nicely. Pruning and other maintenance is rarely needed. Use it as a bold accent or part of a mixed border. SUMMER WINE may even be cut for use in arrangements. This is a troublefree addition to either the home or commercial landscape. Bloom time early Summer. Height: 4 x 6 Blooms on: better on old wood, Prune right after flowering Zone 3 In general, more acidity makes hydrangeas turn blue, less acidity (or more alkaline soil) promotes pink that is, unless we're talking about white hydrangeas, which alas, are limited to white. Take a look at our ph color guide to get closer to the color you prefer. Hydrangea Color Preference Please see your local Garden Center for products and directions for use.
Because of BloomStruck's extremely strong stems, above average heat tolerance and great disease resistance - especially to powdery mildew - it is a perfect combination of beauty and hardiness for your garden! You can have vivid rose-pink or purple hydrangea flower heads. BloomStruck also has incredibly beautiful red-purple stems, dark green leaves with red petioles and red veins, which give great contrast to your other garden shrubs, perennials and annuals. Height: 3-5' Spread: 4-5' Shape: Rounded Foliage: Thick dark green Fall Foliage: Bronze Exposure: Partial Sun Zone: 4-9 Bloom Time: June September A unique new hardy hydrangea with loads of beautiful, dense blooms that emerge pure white and then turn bright pink from the bottom up. Flowers eventually age to a dark pink-red, and are a nice addition to the early fall landscape. The color pattern is much like that of Pinky Winky hydrangea, but the panicles are quite full rather than lacy in appearance. Strong stems hold the flowers upright in the garden, and make it an excellent cut flower, too. Height: 6 Spread: 6' Shape: Upright Exposure: Full Sun Zone: 3-9 Pruning: Early Spring
An exciting hardy Hydrangea from Holland, 'Limelight' has unique bright chartreuse blooms in mid-summer that hold bright and refreshing color right into autumn when the blooms change color to a rich deep pink. The autumn display of chartreuse and pink blooms on the same plant is breathtaking! The color makes a great addition to the garden and it blends wonderfully with all other colors. Use 'Limelight', either fresh or dried, in bouquets to make a unique floral design. This is an easy to grow plant with reliable flowering and flower color regardless of soil ph. The flower heads are of good size, ranging from 6 to 12 inches and are held upright on the shrub. The blooms are well distributed making a very nice plant and display. Bloom time mid Summer - Fall. This is a real beauty, with flowers so delicate and refined that it seems strange to call them tough - but they are. Extremely budhardy, each year it produces abundant lacecap flowers comprised of doubled sepals. It is a rebloomer. While this plant leans to blue, the flower color may range from blue to pink to white, all soft, delicate shades perfect for refined gardens. The flowers age to an attractive pink, and tip down in a distinctive arching fashion. Add aluminum sulfate to the soil to encourage blue flower color. Height: 18 x 24 Blooms on: old & new wood Zone 5 Bloom Time: June - September Height: 4x5 Blooms on: New wood Zone 3 Pruning: Early Spring
This adaptable native plant produces huge flowers (as much as 12" across) and is both reliable and beautiful. Flowers open green, then mature to white before turning green at the end of their life cycle. Very cold hardy Incrediball blooms on new growth so even very cold winters won't keep it from blooming. The flowers are held upright on very sturdy stems, so they don't flop like 'Annabelle' will. Bloom time Summer. Height: 4-5 Fragrant: lighty fragant Zone 3 Pruning: Early Spring Bloom Time: Late June - September Fire Light is the new standard to measure all hardy hydrangeas. Upright panicles are packed with florets which transform from pure white to rich pomegranate-pink. Its thick, sturdy stems hold up the beautiful flowers so they are prominently displayed in the garden. Bloom time mid Summer - Fall. White summer flowers turn red in fall. Very hardy. Height: 4-6 x 4-6 Blooms on: New wood Zone 3 Pruning: Early Spring
A new dwarf form of the ever popular 'Limelight' hydrangea, Little Lime sports the same great flowers and coloration as 'Limelight' but in a smaller package. At one third the size of traditional hardy hydrangeas, this new variety fits well into any landscape. Summer flowers open soft green and turn pink and burgundy in fall. Bloom time mid Summer - Fall. Height: 3-5 x 3-5 Blooms on: New wood Zone 3 Pruning: Early Spring Incrediball Blush adds a new color to the series. This beauty has big, bodacious, blush-pink blooms that change to an attractive green color as they age. The sturdy stems hold the huge flowers up even after heavy rains, making this a great choice for cutting. Height: 4-5 Fragrant: lighty fragant Zone 3 Pruning: Early Spring Bloom Time: Late June - September
This dwarf hydrangea will turn heads! Bobo is a delightful plant that is engulfed by large white flowers in summer. The flowers are held upright on strong stems, and continue to grow and lengthen as they bloom. In fall they can turn pinkish. It is an undeniable asset to any garden, particularly those in which space is limited. Bloom time mid Summer - Fall. Height: 30 x 36 Blooms on: New wood Zone 3 Pruning: Early Spring Pinky Winky has an unusual name, and an even more unusual flower. The large white panicles open in mid to late summer, and as summer turns to fall the florets at the base of the panicles turn pink. The flower panicles continue to grow, producing new white florets at the tip. The result is spectacular two-toned flower panicles that can reach up to 16 inches in length! This is a real show-stopper that's also very easy to grow. Adaptable to most soils and both sun and shade, Pinky Winky will thrive in most gardens. Bloom time mid Summer - Fall. Height: 4x5 Blooms on: New wood Zone 3 Pruning: Early Spring
