Established in 1947, the organization has expanded its range from a handful of European choirs to a world wide Catholic choral network with over 60,000 singers in over 30 countries and 5 continents. The mission of spreading sacred music through the angelic voices of children has given Pueri Cantores the blessings of each Pope from Pius XII to Benedict XVI. Pope John Paul II proclaimed: With your voices, with your youth, with your lives you proclaim Jesus, the Saviour You are the little messengers of beauty. The International Federation would not exist if not for the inspiration of the Petits Chanteurs à la Croix de Bois, or Little Singers of the Wooden Cross, also known as the Little Singers of Paris. Beginning circa 1907, several French boys under the direction of Paul Berthier founded a small group of choristers who responded to the Motu Proprio of St. Pope Pius X. Pope Pius called for a return to Gregorian chant and Renaissance polyphonic music over Baroque pieces and the influences of modern musical instrumentation. The Second Vatican Council followed this Motu Proprio by stating: Choirs must be diligently developed, thus bringing even stronger support for choirs of boys and girls to participate in liturgy. These young French students who came from working class backgrounds would go from city to city, church to church to perform for audiences. The Little Singers of the Wooden Cross gained their name by performing in simple white monastic robes with a small wooden cross that hung around their necks. Over time, the Little Singers of the Wooden Cross would perpetuate their missionary-like enthusiasm for musical evangelism by performing internationally in Europe, North America and Africa. As the group toured internationally they became admired and found that after performing in a city or country they had like-minded souls forming choirs and modeling them after the Little Singers. Even countries that the Little Singers did not visit were inspired to form choirs through phonograph recordings and news reports. As momentum built for the Little Singers of the Wooden Cross, there was a call put out by choir directors and participants for an international fraternity of child choirs. The man to bring about this musical alliance was Monsignor Fernand Maillet, director of the Singers of the Wooden Cross. In 1939 Maillet formed the Federation of Singing Schools with a few French choirs around the Singers of the Wooden Cross. In 1944 the federation grew significantly in size and Maillet formed the French Federation of Pueri Cantores, which was officially recognized by the assembly of Cardinals and Archbishops of France in March 1947. Included in the Federation were several hundred French choirs as well as Belgian, Canadian, Tunisian, English and Swiss groups who wished to be affiliated. As membership into the French Federation grew, Maillet sought to internationalize the organization. In 1947 the first International Congress of Pueri Cantores was held in Paris with 3,000 young male singers. In 1949, Pueri Cantores held its second International Congress in Rome where choirs from fifteen countries celebrated mass with Pope Pius XII in St. Peter s Basilica. At this congress, a constitution of statutes was adopted along with Maillet being nominated President-Director of the International Federation. After the success of the second congress, the Holy See saw it fit to bless the group further: in 1951 the statutes of the International Federation of Pueri Cantores was approved by the Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Montini (later to be Pope Paul VI). In 1954 the official International Federation of Pueri Cantores was formed with Msgr. Maillet now overseeing the

Page 2 development of an organization that now included membership in over fifty countries and a patron saint St. Dominic Savio. Maillet s personal vision for Pueri Cantores was for them to be missionaries of peace. After seeing his choir through the turbulence of world war, Maillet saw the role that music had in breaking down international differences and the unifying power it had on those sharing in the Catholic faith. Maillet wrote his vision in a booklet distributed to promote Pueri Cantores: It is really a single musical ideal, which moves these thousands of children gathered from the four corners of the horizon and singing the same selection, an overwhelming symbol of the union, which, in spite of all the inseparable diversities of the human condition can group all men and all Christians together. The approval gave Pueri Cantores legal status within the Church and opened the organization to form both National and Regional organizations. Bi-annual International Congress would be held in a major international city such as Madrid, London, Paris, Vienna, Brussels, Lourdes, Cologne, Guadalajara, Tokyo, Maracaibo, Maastricht and Rome, where several Popes have celebrated mass with Pueri Cantores. These congresses would foster not only the appreciation and celebration of liturgical music but would also cultivate the international goodwill between the young singers Maillet sought. The International Federation of Pueri Cantores also became the central authority of music distributed and used among the national choirs as well as keeping contact amongst National and Regional Congresses. The International Federation is also in charge of public promotion through bulletins, newsletters, audio/visual recordings, press releases, pamphlets and many other kinds of media relations tools. In the wake of the formation of the International Federation of Pueri Cantores and the official recognition of the International Federation in 1951, the United States and other countries began to form their own national federations. Americans first heard of the Little Singers of the Wooden Cross from performances in Montreal that then traveled stateside to Detroit and later Chicago to sing. On November 5th, 1952 the Cardinal Archbishop of Detroit celebrated a mass with the Little Singers of the Wooden Cross and a choir from St. Thomas the Apostle in Ann Arbor under the direction of Charles H. Clarke. The Cardinal hailed both choirs for their talent and the event became a yearly musical tradition. Meanwhile in Chicago, Monsignor Charles Meter was the National President of the Federation of the U.S.A. but was trying to form an official American chapter of Pueri Cantores. After the successful performance in Detroit, a pontifical mass was celebrated by Chicago Archbishop Cardinal Stritch, which celebrated the anniversary of Pope Pius X s Motu Proprio. Cardinal Stritch himself had written to Msgr. Maillet expressing interest in spreading the mission and music of Pueri Cantores to the United States. Thirty-eight different groups from around Chicago joined the Little Singers of the Wooden Cross. The groups packed Holy Name Cathedral singing Gregorian chants and polyphonic pieces from Bach, Palestrina, Schubert and others to the delight of those lucky enough to hear the performance. Cardinal Stritch gave a rousing sermon on the pulpit, praising the Little Singers and the adherence to Pope Pius words: At the time of our War of Liberation, France, in the person of La Fayette, came to our help; today the little French singers again come to us to help us spread all over the world the wishes of Pope Pius X concerning sacred music. By 1953, parishes in cities all over America soon wanted to be a part of the growing federation of Pueri Cantores. Cities such as Cincinnati, Newark, Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Santa Fe, and Albany joined Chicago and Detroit in forming their own Diocesan Federations under the directions of local bishops. Soon, these groups of choirs, some 360 individual groups, formed the American Federation of Pueri Cantores with Msgr. Charles Meter as their President. Overseeing the actions of Pueri Cantores is an Episcopal Moderator, a bishop or cardinal who gives an ecclesiastical viewpoint to advise the federation. The American Federation took many of the same responsibilities as the International Federation in promoting Pueri Cantores, distributing officially sanctioned music, arranging performances, and putting together National Congresses and regional tours annually. The American Federation also arranges for summer programs to train singers and programs for musical directors and conductors. These programs help aspiring and current choristers form the social and musical cohesion necessary for a group to perform and travel together well. Provenance One half of the collection was acquired through a portion of the personal collection of Very Rev. Charles Meter and was donated to the Chicago Archdiocese Records and Archives Center. The other half was donated by Jan Schmidt of the American Federation of Pueri Cantores to the Chicago Archdiocese Records and Archives Center in October of 2010. Accruals 201027402 - Additional materials donated by Jan Schmidt in October of 2010. Separations 3 cubic feet Scope & Content The collection consists of 18 archival boxes (legal size: 13 full, 2 half; letter size: 2 half; 1 shoebox size). The collection has a wealth of correspondence from prominent leaders of Pueri Cantores including international presidents, national presidents, secretaries, conductors and other members. Most notable are the correspondence collections of Msgr. Meter, organizer and first president of the American Federation of Pueri Cantores, as well as Msgr. Maillet, the founder and first president of the International Federation of Pueri Cantores. Much of the correspondence is in English, however since members are strewn about internationally many of the letters are in Italian, French, German, Dutch and Latin, among other languages. Another major part of the collection is the International and National Congresses. Correspondence, schedules, performances and ephemera from the Congresses are included among the documents. One important note about this portion of the collection is that not all of the International Congresses and National Congresses are included. In addition to these two portions are photographs, sound and video recordings (CDs, DVDs), newsletters, reports, financial records, press releases, periodicals, papal letters (a copy of the Motu Proprio from Pope Pius XII is included), pamphlets, brochures, membership registry, advertisements, legal documents (articles of incorporation, constitution, statutes), as well as letters from Presidents of the United States praising Pueri Cantores and various other documents and ephemera.
