Benefits Unpacking Installation The SS7 sc-hst was developed to measure turbidity in samples at high temperatures. The SS7 sc-hst uses fittings molded from black polypropylene to minimize leakage. These fittings can withstand higher working temperatures than standard PVC. A flow multiplier pulls moisture-laden air out of the enclosure and reduces condensation. The flow multiplier is powered by compressed air and captures the vapors before they can condense inside the instrument enclosure. The vents in the enclosure act as air inlets rather than air outlets. Remove the kit from the shipping container and inspect each item for damage. Verify that all items are included. If any items are missing or damaged, contact Hach Customer Service in Loveland, Colorado. The Hach Company toll free phone number for customers within the United States is 800-227-4224. Customers outside the United States should contact their regional Hach office or distributor. Note: This kit will only work on an SS7 sc Turbidimeter that has a molded slant tube (one continuous piece). If the turbidimeter has a fabricated slant tube (made from PVC components), order a molded one (Cat. No. 4500200) and install it before proceeding. DANGER All electrical connections should be made by a qualified technician to assure compliance to all applicable electrical codes. 2
1. If upgrading a standard SS7 sc (or older) turbidimeter, remove the hose fittings from the slant tube and the bulkhead adapters along with the hoses inside the unit. Then remove the bulkhead adapters at the bottom of the unit and proceed to step 2. If upgrading an older SE (severe environment) turbidimeter, complete the steps above and then disconnect power to the heater (if existing). a. Remove the heater and the control box and disconnect the wiring to the power source. b. Remove the mounting screws from the electrical control box, the heater, and the adapter to the enclosure. Discard the screws. c. Plug the hole used for the electrical connections with a small, oil-tight hole seal. d. Thoroughly clean the unit and make any required repairs to it. 2. Using a 15 /8-inch hole saw, drill a 1.625 inch diameter hole on the upper-left side of the unit as shown in Figure 1 and Figure 2 (this hole may already exist). 3. Install the ¾-in. gray PVC bulkhead fittings in the new hole as shown in Figure 2. 4. Install the white polypropylene bulkhead fittings in the bottom of the unit as shown in Figure 2. 5. Install the new (black) hose adapter fittings using Teflon tape and tighten them properly with a wrench. Orient the ¾-in. elbows as shown in Figure 2. 6. Install the hoses between the slant tube and the bulkhead fitting on the bottom of the unit. Attach the hoses with the stainless steel clamps. Note: Hose is furnished in one piece. Cut each piece to desired length. 7. Install the ¾-in. hose barb elbow in the vent cover and the straight hose fitting in the PVC bulkhead fitting leading to the flow multiplier. Teflon tape is not required. 8. Loosen the screws that hold the light source in place before installing the vent cover. Figure 1 Location of 1.625-inch diameter hole (side view of instrument case) 3
9. Install the vent cover on the top of the slant tube using the threaded disk and ¼-inch screw. Tighten until snug. 10. Tighten the screws that hold the light source. 11. Check the alignment of the light source after installing the cover and readjust if necessary, using the new alignment plate included in the kit. See the Surface Scatter 7 sc Turbidimeter User Manual (Cat. No. DOC026.53.00769) for alignment instructions. 12. Connect the elbow in the vent cover and the straight hose fitting in the PVC bulkhead adapter with a section of ¾-in. hose. No clamps are required. 13. Screw the flow multiplier into the outside of the PVC bulkhead adapter as shown in Figure 2. 14. Connect a filter/pressure regulator to the flow multiplier. (The filter/pressure regulator, tubing, and tubing fittings are not provided in this kit.) The flow multiplier has a 1 /8-in. NPT male fitting. A ¾-in. hose should be connected to the output of the flow multiplier and routed to a suitable place to vent the fumes and/or condensate coming out of the hose. 15. Set the pressure regulator to 20 psi initially. Adjust the flow up or down as needed. 16. The enclosed drain trap should be used to prevent air from being drawn in through the drain. See Figure 2. 17. When reconnecting the hydraulics to the bottom of the unit, hold the ¾-in. bulkhead fittings on the inside of the enclosure with the door open. 18. Replace the label displaying the part number and serial number of the sensor unit (not the control unit) with the label enclosed in the upgrade kit. Thoroughly clean the enclosure surface where the old label was attached and place the new label in the same location. This identifies the product as a reconditioned product (for service and compliance purposes). 19. Calibrate the instrument using the calibration cup as described in the user manual. Operation If condensation forms in the enclosure, increase the air pressure (and flow) by increasing the air pressure setting of the pressure regulator for the flow multiplier. Make sure the bubble trap is working. Bubbles on the surface of the liquid will cause incorrect readings. If deposits accumulate inside the unit, wash the inside with warm water spray. The vent cover at the top of the slant tube can be removed for cleaning if necessary. Loosen the light source before removing the cover. Check the alignment of the light after reinstalling the cover using the new alignment plate included in the kit. Make sure the cover sits flat on top of the slant tube when reinstalled. Calibrate the instrument using the calibration cup as described in the user manual. Note: Do not operate the instrument without the cover. Note: Do not operate the instrument unless the flow multiplier is also operating. 4
