Legal Sector Alliance Carbon Footprint Protocol Report December 2008 The LSA s Founding Members have all measured their carbon footprint using the LSA Carbon Footprint Protocol. This report contains a summary of the carbon footprint for each firm.

FOREWORD Ecofys, a leading knowledge and innovation company in the field of renewable energy, energy efficiency and climate change, strongly supports initiatives such as the Legal Sector Alliance Carbon Footprint Protocol, which provide sector-specific guidance on carbon footprinting. The Protocol streamlines current advice on calculating carbon footprints and provides a credible, transparent and user-friendly methodology for the legal profession. Ecofys commends the law firms who have taken the step of calculating and publicly reporting their carbon footprints using the Protocol. Understanding your own carbon footprint is one of the most important steps in being able to better manage and reduce your greenhouse gas emissions. The footprints will provide the basis from which these firms can measure and demonstrate future progress in achieving carbon reductions and are a valuable tool in communicating with stakeholders. While emissions will vary significantly due to the size and business models of each firm, the process that firms have gone through to understand what they are, together with a commitment to reduce and report on them, is important. Sharing the results amongst the participating firms and with the profession more widely will help the firms to understand their own emissions performance and provide an opportunity to share good practice in reducing their emissions. The challenges faced by the legal sector to reduce its carbon emissions are the same challenges faced by all of us, and particularly those operating in the commercial and services sector. Collectively, energy use in buildings represents the majority of the law firms footprints, followed by business travel, of which long haul flights is the largest component. Most firms should be able to reduce building energy use through changing behaviour and modest investment, with even greater savings possible where the firm owns their building or has a strong relationship with their landlord. Reducing emissions from aviation is also important for most of the law firms and will present a real challenge over the coming period. Ecofys (www.ecofys.com) Ecofys is a leading knowledge and innovation company in the field of renewable energy, energy efficiency and climate change. It delivers research and service solutions from product development to implementation management. Ecofys' clients are energy companies, financials and corporate business, governments and local authorities, international institutions, project developers, housing associations, building companies and energy consumers around the world. 3
