1 Page 1 of 5 Approving products and services worldwide November 2010 To download this newsletter in pdf format please go to News Isoclad gain first LPS 1175 physical security approval for composite panel security walling systems Isoclad have become the first company to gain LPCB approval and Red Book listing to LPS 1175: Issue 6 for composite panel security walling and enclosure systems. These have achieved security ratings 3 and 4 for their Securiclad product. Isoclad say Infrastructure security in today s era is paramount. We developed Securiclad as a quick-fix solution for a vast range of applications, ranging from safeguarding high-value goods and sensitive information to securing water treatment plants, mobile relay stations and data centres. Securiclad is a high security panel system that sustains attack. LPS 1175 (Requirements and testing procedures for the LPCB approval and listing of intruder-resistant building components, strongpoints, security enclosures and free-standing barriers) specifies eight levels of security which resist times from one minute (opportunist) to twenty minutes (highly professional targeted) attacks. The ratings achieved by Isoclad relate to experienced forced entry using a wide range of manual and battery powered tools lasting five minutes and ten minutes respectively. A guide to the security levels can be downloaded click here. For a download of LPS1175 click here. For more approved security products click here B&Q encourages its customers to look for the LPCB mark B&Q have recently published an in-store leaflet for customers on the importance of protecting your home and your family from fire and carbon monoxide poisoning. The leaflet promotes third party approval of products as a means of ensuring that the product meets the relevant standard. B&Q recommends that customers look for a mark you can trust, such as the LPCB mark. The LPCB Certification mark is recognised around the world as a mark that stands for safety and security. If you have an LPCBcertificated product or service, your company can display the appropriate LPCB certification mark on promotional materials, including websites - and the LPCB certification mark can be used to hyperlink directly to listings on the Red Book Live website. Contact your Scheme Manager for details including the terms and conditions, or enquiries@lpcb.com. (Picture courtesy of B&Q)
2 Page 2 of 5 Huge fire in unsprinklered car park in Holland leads to questions in the Dutch parliament On 26th October a fire in an unsprinklered underground car park in Haarlem destroyed at least 26 cars. A Dutch Member of Parliament has asked for the law to be changed so that hospitals, care homes, schools and car parks are fitted with sprinklers. John van Lierop, representing the Dutch Sprinkler Association, has been interviewed and has supplied information from the EFSN about legislative requirements in other European countries to fit sprinklers in underground car parks. BRE Global has been actively researching the use of sprinklers in car parks. The findings from tests commissioned by the UK department for Communities and Local Government (CLG) and subsequent work for BAFSA (to investigate the effectiveness of sprinklers on a fire in a car park using a stacking machine) can be found by following these links: CLG Project: Fires in enclosed car parks Sprinkler protected car stacker fire tests Hotel owners prosecuted for breaches of fire safety legislation Two hotel owners were recently given hefty fines following prosecution under the Regulatory Reform Fire Safety Order. An inspection of a West London hotel found blocked emergency exits and wedged-open fire doors. There was a lack of a suitable and sufficient fire risk assessment. A hotel manager in Shropshire was fined when the fire alarm failed to go off, despite smoke in the premises. The premises were fitted with a full automatic fire alarm and detection system, but it had not been properly tested and was not in working order. BRE Trust publications on fire safety in hotels: Fire Safety in Hotels Securing your hotel - a practical guide for hotel owners and managers Securing your hotel and Fire Safety in Hotels Special Offer Aberdeen Asset Management joins the International Sustainability Alliance Aberdeen Asset Management is the latest organisation to join the International Sustainability Alliance (ISA) as a Founding Member. ISA is the network of real estate occupiers, owners and investors who are using benchmarking to improve the sustainability and value of property portfolios. BRE Global manages this group. 3 Page 3 of 5 Promoting Red Book listings across the world - Exhibitions, Events and Visits FIREX North, October, Manchester LPCB recently exhibited at FIREX North, held at Manchester Central on October The event welcomed a wide range of specifiers and end users from major public and private sector organisations including the hotel and residential care sectors. A large number of Red Books were distributed to visitors and we received a significant number of enquiries for listed products and services. LPCB visit Cairo to promote EN standards and LPCB approvals Reg Grigg and Graham Orme visited Cairo in early November to visit key fire consultancies to discuss the usage and acceptance of EN standards and LPCB approvals in the region. The Ministry of Housing (Housing & Building National Research Centre) (HBRC) who produce the Building Codes in Egypt were also visited to discuss similar issues. During the visit Reg and Graham were speakers at a conference New Trends in Codes & Applications in Fire Protection (jointly organised by the Egyptian Fire Protection Association (EFPA) and UK T&I) which was oversubscribed with more than 150 attendees. Papers presented by LPCB were: An introduction to the LPCB approval and listing process. LPS1181 (Series of Fire Growth Tests for LPCB Approval and Listing of Construction Product Systems) - Reg and Graham promoted the use of fire safe composite panels for the many new projects in development in Egypt. The presentation also gave members of the EFPA details of the recent research on car park fires and the use of sprinkler systems. A paper on the comparison document published by LPCB on the use of EN54 products in NFPA 72 designed systems. After the presentation, the findings of the report became a topic of conversation among the consultants present, many of whom do not want to be tied into specific sources of supply when designing new systems. A copy of the assessment of compatibility report EN54 and NFPA72 published by LPCB can be downloaded (click here) and a webinar of the findings of the report can be viewed here BAFSA Conference, November, Newcastle
4 Page 4 of 5 Eric Michaelis and Simon Billis attended the BAFSA (British Automatic Fire Sprinkler Association) Exhibition and Conference. The event provided a great opportunity to meet with many of the manufacturers and installers attending and to discuss with them the important developments in the use of sprinkler systems. Two papers were presented at the conference: Sprinklers in car parks - Ian Gough, BAFSA and David Crowder, BRE Global Costs & Benefits of Sprinklers in Schools - Jeremy Fraser-Mitchell, BRE Global Eric also presented a workshop on LPS Approval of Sprinkler Installers for Residential and Domestic Sprinkler Systems. This important guide provides practical information on assessing the risk of fire and enhancing the security of retail pemises. The guide is for anyone who is responsible for the care and safety of customers, employees and visitors, and for the property and assets of the premises. It straightforwardly presents the important issues and an approach by which good fire safety and security practice can become familiar and normal to employees.
