Foreword This South African standard was approved by National Committee SABS/TC 064, Lighting and optics, in accordance with procedures of the SABS Standards Division, in compliance with annex 3 of the WTO/TBT agreement. This document was approved for publication in December 2015. This document supersedes SANS 1186-1:2011 (edition 3.6). A vertical line in the margin shows where the text has been technically modified by amendment No. 7. Symbolic safety signs Part 1: Standard signs and general requirements 1 Scope 1.1 This part of SANS 1186 specifies requirements for standard ordinary (non-reflective) symbolic safety signs, including signs on vinyl sheets (decals). This part of SANS 1186 also specifies general requirements applicable to self-luminous (radioluminescent), internally illuminated, retro-reflective and photoluminescent symbolic safety signs (complete with their backing sheets, where applicable). 1.2 This standard does not cover road signs.
