Plaza - History 1960 s 2014 - ANC 2016 - DDOT Feasibility Study Several Visions over the Years Design Illustrations have ranged from Formal to Passive to Active Uses on Plaza
2016 DDOT Study - Stakeholder Feedback Historic and Cultural Resources Preserve views to and from the Civil War Memorial at Dupont Circle. Maintain the shape and building edge around Dupont Circle, which was designed as a focal point, and ensure that the plaza remains secondary and modest. Separate the plaza from Dupont Circle to help differentiate the two public spaces. Minimize the level that the deck of the plaza needs to be raised. Maintain visibility of the historic infrastructure that defines the depressed roadway and tunnel (constructed over 50 years ago). Consider improvements to Dupont Triangle Park (also known as Reservation 149). Pedestrian Access Utilize the ventilation gap as a unique design opportunity. Maximize the amount of continuous plaza space. Maintain and enhance access to businesses. Consider a shared street with unique treatments and safe pedestrian crossings to and from the plaza as shown in Figure 3-1 (e.g., National Gallery of Art along 4th Street; Eastern Market along 7th Street). Emphasize and incorporate both sides of Q Street Improve bicycle circulation and maintain adequate access to transit, both bus and rail. Readapt the existing U-turn lane for pedestrian access and circulation, and consider temporary closure of the access roads for future study. Incorporate shade and analyze the potential for trees for future study.
Plaza Framework Concepts Sketch Idea 1 An Oasis Sketch Idea 2 A Promenade Sketch Idea 3 A Piazza Key Design Issues: - Connection of Plaza to Adjacent Sidewalks, and Treatment of Adjacent Streets - Ratio of Hardscape to Softscape, as it relates to flexibility for community use - Treatment of Opening in Deck Structure
