3.7 Million Potential Design Lovers In the 9 days Design Pavilion occupied the Times Square plazas, 3.7 million people passed through. They come to Times Square to find interesting experiences and be entertained. Design Pavilion is a platform for brands to use design as a storytelling and engaging medium and to reach an audience of local corporate business people, residents, and, of course, international visitors.

Times Square Times Square is the center of New York City. Renowned as the most visited, photographed and highly trafficked public gathering space on the planet, it draws an international audience of millions weekly. There is no other location anywhere that attracts more people in one place at one time every day. In Times Square, Design Pavilion has become the public centerpiece and hub of our city s official design week, NYCxDESIGN, quickly taking a leadership role on the world s design stage. Times Square Alliance has proven its dedication to the arts and design through their acclaimed Arts Program and newly-renovated plazas designed by world-class architectural firm, Snohetta. Times Square Alliance provides a fully supportive and committed partnership to Design Pavilion, within the strongest business district in midtown. Design Pavilion and Times Square is a perfect fit. Powerful Digital Partners The 2018 Design Pavilion was joined by some amazing digital partners. Nasdaq gave us time on their magnificent Times Square screen and broadcast daily design-focused interviews, curated by Design Pavilion, on the theme of business and design, and hosted by our biz + buzz developer, Patrick Duffy. Superior Digital Displays gave us 14 days on their billboards. The NYCxDESIGN Press Conference On May 11, NYCxDESIGN was officially kicked off with a press conference at Design Pavilion. The international media, city officials and design industry leaders were in attendance.

Extensive Media Coverage

Media Partnership We see great potential in partnering with media to leverage our combined strengths. This year New York Magazine took us up on this offer to great success. In addition to helping us promote the event, they commissioned illustrator Joana Avillez to create a 12 cover on site. The mini artist-inresidence program entertained Design Pavilion visitors and generated a new cover for their 50 Covers program celebrating their 50th year in business.

Thoughtful Discussion DESIGN TALKS NYC programming was robust and featured some of the most innovative thinkers of our time. Our Talks program is a great compliment to Design Pavilion installations, providing additional opportunities to share design stories and brand messages, and attracting a large design industry audience. Rain or shine people are out! Being associated with one of the best destinations during NYCxDesign is such an amazing opportunity to meet our customers and make sales. We watched users faces firsthand and received their positive feedback on the spot. Design Pavilion also brought us excellent international publicity which led to potential clients to create new ideas for cities in The Netherlands and Spain. Participation at Time Square Design Pavilion gave us a unique opportunity to do just that. The audience at trade fairs and design exhibitions is comprised mostly of professionals. At Times Square, our audience was as diverse as New York City itself. This was an empowering educational experience. A Dramatic New Structure As our name implies, central to the mission of Design Pavilion is the realization of structures to demonstrate the power of architecture and provide shelter for our installations. This year we partnered with Inflate UK to create our centerpiece, designed by Harry Allen and lighting design by L Observatoire International with Philips Lighting.

Unforgettable Experiences Design Pavilion encourages product launches and offers a real-world, handson user testing ground. Zu Studio s antigravity furniture, Parenthesis, provided an unforgettable respite. The leaning beds force users into a unique position that lowers the heart rate. Arranged in a circle, the meditative installation created community and exposed people to the power of design. 2016 Design Pavilion in Astor Place

Engaging Stories Design Pavilion gives sponsors the opportunity to tell their stories using design as a tool. This year Avery Dennision partnered with ArtsThread and ran a competition for young designers. Their work and the process by which it was made was featured in an ethereal video cube.

Interactive Installations Design engages the public. This year Magis with Herman Miller created a design installation featuring artwork gleaned from an ArtsThread competition. The public engaged with Magis products on an intimate level and experienced great 2D and 3D design.

Innovative Products MioCulture debuted their Work is Play products to the world at Design Pavilion. The interactive installation was perfect for Times Square and introduced many people to design for the first time.

Design Incubation Design Pavilion is a great platform to introduce new ideas and design. This year Times Square Alliance, our partner and host, launched an exciting public space project, commissioning street furniture designed by a variety of NYC design talent. The project demonstrated the power of design to shape the world around us and made an exciting addition to Design Pavilion.

Crucial Issues The Future of Takeout exhibition developed by the students in the Pratt Institute Industrial Design Department and sponsored by the NY State Department of Environmental Conservation explored alternatives to wasteful packaging used by the fast food industry.

Retail American Design Club has popped-up at the last three editions of the Design Pavilion. They sell a wonderful selection of design products. This year they featured an AR activated Times Square T-shirt that was developed specifically for Design Pavilion as a collaboration between graphic designer, Tim Convery, and retail technology innovator, Blippar. With all of this innovation going on, we see great potential in our retail component and plan an expansion next year.

Industry Leaders In addition to its broad public reach, Design Pavilion offers opportunities to target the design industry more specifically. This year Duggal, NYC s premier imaging house, partnered with Hunter Douglas to show off their latest technologies. Duggal demonstrated its Lumipixel LED screens alongside Hunter Douglas automated blind systems. They also hosted a spectaular reception, under the Times Square signs, for industry professionals.

Graphic Statements Design Pavilion 2018 presented a wide array of dazzling graphic design, including a partnership with AIGA supporting their get out the vote initiative, Design for Democracy ; two competitions run by ArtsThread promoting the work of young graphic artists; an amazing on-site identity program developed by Stefan Hengst and Klaus Kempenaars; and the animations of Circus Family that were on display throughout Times Square courtesy of Nasdaq and Superior Digital Displays.

The Harry Allen Design process is a unique combination of personal experimentation, cross-pollination, and strategic thinking.
