ELGA PURELAB UHQ PS Operator Manual 1. HEALTH AND SAFETY NOTES The PURELAB UHQ PS range of products have been designed with safety in mind, however it is important that personnel working on these units are familiar with any potential dangers. All safety information detailed in this handbook is highlighted as WARNING and CAUTION instructions. These are used as follows: WARNING! WARNINGS ARE GIVEN WHERE FAILING TO OBSERVE THE INSTRUCTION COULD RESULT IN INJURY OR DEATH TO PERSONS. CAUTION! Cautions are given where failure to observe the instruction could result in damage to the equipment, associated equipment and processes. 1.1 Electricity Those products requiring electrical supplies operate at mains supply voltages. For routine operations such as changing the Dl cartridge pack and Pretreatment cartridges it is sufficient to switch the unit off at the power inlet module located at the top rear left hand side. For more detailed work or access to the printed circuit boards the unit must be physically disconnected from the mains supply by removal of the mains feed plug. WARNING! IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT THE ELECTRICAL SUPPLY IS ISOLATED BEFORE ANY WORK IS STARTED. 1.2 Pressure Mains feed water pressure or the internal water pump are used to drive the water through the various stages of purification. This pressure could present a danger if not dissipated prior to changing cartridges etc. WARNING! IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT THE MAINS PRESSURE IS ISOLATED AND RESIDUAL PRESSURE IS ALLOWED TO DISSIPATE PRIOR TO REMOVAL OF ANY CARTRIDGES. Switching off the electricity will isolate the source of pressure on those units requiring an electrical supply. WARNING! ON THOSE UNITS WITHOUT REQUIREMENT FOR ELECTRICITY THE WATER PRESSURE SHOULD BE ISOLATED FROM THE MAINS WATER SUPPLY. PURELAB UHQ PS Version 11-09/07 Page 1

PURELAB UHQ PS Operator Manual ELGA 1.3 Ultra-Violet Light On some units short wavelength ultra-violet light is used to destroy micro-organisms. The blue light visible from the front of the unit is quite safe as the harmful component of the ultra-violet is filtered out. WARNING! THE UNIT SHOULD NEVER BE OPERATED WITH THE FRONT COVER REMOVED AS THE OPERATOR COULD BE EXPOSED TO SOME SHORT WAVELENGTH UV LIGHT. 1.4 Chemicals Cleaning using specialist chemicals is recommended on some units. Safety data sheets conforming to COSHH regulations will be supplied with any chemicals and these should be closely followed. WARNING! ENSURE THAT YOU AND ANY OTHER STAFF WORKING ON THESE PRODUCTS ARE FAMILIAR WITH THE POTENTIAL DANGERS AND THAT THE PROPER SAFETY EQUIPMENT IS AVAILABLE. IF IN DOUBT CONTACT YOUR LOCAL DISTRIBUTOR. 1.5 Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Material safety data sheets covering the various replaceable cartridges are available upon request if you contact your local distributor. ELGA PURELAB UHQ PS Operator Manual 2. PRODUCT DESCRIPTION The Ultra High Quality Polishing System unit (PURELAB UHQ PS) has been specifically designed to meet the high purity demands of the modern analytical laboratory which is already served by a purified water supply. Several purification techniques have been packaged into a stylish self contained unit designed to stand alongside modern analytical instruments. Ultra high quality water produced by the unit is intended for use in such applications as atomic absorption spectrophotometry, ion chromatography, high performance liquid chromatography, fluorescence analysis and general microbiology. Fig. 1 illustrates the main external features visible to the user. Situated behind the side covers are the water purification cartridges, and behind the front cover are the electrical circuit boards and components. For normal use, The PURELAB UHQ PS is connected to a pre-purified water supply and electrical supply by the connections and sockets at the rear of the unit. Consistent water quality is assured by the in-built process technology with its recirculation features. Dispensing of the water is by unique pipette type Dispenser Pen, which enables fingertip control of the liquid flow. Briefly, within the PURELAB UHQ PS unit there is an inlet solenoid valve which controls the flow of pre-purified water into the unit reservoir, the contents of the reservoir are then pumped by a recirculation pump through four water purification cartridges. Water quality is continuously monitored by a temperature compensated resistivity meter and the water is irradiated with short-wave radiation in a UV chamber prior to flowing through the Dispense Pen. Recirculated water returns to the reservoir via a non-return valve. The tip of the Dispense Pen remains in a well, bathed in UV radiation, during periods of non-use. The right-hand removable cover needs to be opened every 1-2 months (by simply undoing the ¼ turn fasteners) in order to unclip and replace the exhausted media cartridges with new cartridges. Replacement cartridge packs as well as spare parts, service and/or advice are available from your local Distributor. This handbook describes the unique PURELAB UHQ PS process, how to install the PURELAB UHQ PS unit, and then how to carry out these cartridge changes. By following these simple instructions, you will be able to achieve and maintain the highest quality of water possible from your PURELAB UHQ PS. PURELAB UHQ PS Version 11-09/07 Page 3

PURELAB UHQ PS Operator Manual ELGA 3. PROCESS DESCRIPTION The PURELAB UHQ PS process links four purification technologies - organic absorption; de-ionisation; micro-filtration and photo-oxidation (see Fig. 2). Feedwater requirements for the PURELAB UHQ PS are a pre-purified water supply produced by a de-ioniser, reverse osmosis or still that is filtered to 0.2µm. Feedwater is passed via the inlet connection at the rear of the unit into the unit reservoir prior to further purification. A bar scale display on the front facia panel of the PURELAB UHQ PS, as shown in Fig. 3, indicates the volume of water in the reservoir. Level sensors within the reservoir switch off the recirculation pump at low level, and close the inlet solenoid at high level, stopping the feedwater to the reservoir. If required, pre-purified water from a deioniser, reverse osmosis unit or still, can be poured directly into the reservoir after pulling off the manual filling cap on the reservoir. This can speed up the conditioning of new cartridges. WARNING! CARE MUST BE TAKEN WHEN MANUALLY FILLING THE RESERVOIR. MAKE SURE THAT THE RESERVOIR IS NOT OVERFILLED AND THAT WATER IS NOT ACCIDENTALLY SPLASHED INTO THE VENT TUBE WHICH CONNECTS INTO THE NECK OF THE RESERVOIR. IF WATER GETS INTO THE COMPOSITE VENT FILTER IT WILL CAUSE IT TO COMPLETELY BLOCK, AND IT WILL THEN HAVE TO BE REPLACED. In normal use, the make-up to the reservoir is achieved by pressing the REFILL control button on the front facia panel (see Fig. 3), and observing that the red REFILL light is illuminated. This opens the feedwater inlet solenoid valve, which remains open until the reservoir is full, at which stage the inlet solenoid valve closes and the REFILL light switches off. When the PROCESS control button on the front facia panel (see Fig. 3) is pressed, the amber PROCESS light illuminates, indicating that the contents of the reservoir are now being recirculated through each of the various media cartridges (to remove the inorganic and organic impurities), the 0.05 micron filter cartridge (to remove any particulate matter and bacteria), and the short-wave UV lamp chamber (which further protects the now highly purified water from recontamination by micro-organisms and also assists the final removal of trace organics). The contents of the reservoir are processed up to the ultra high quality level during the course of a pre-timed period of continuous recirculation. This period is approximately 10 minutes. The green READY light illuminates after this time and the amber PROCESS light goes off. The unit will continue to operate for a further 10 minutes, after which time the unit will switch off and revert to a standby mode which is indicated by the READY light flashing. After approximately 60 minutes the unit will automatically restart and recirculate for 10 minutes and then switch off for 60 minutes again. Water can be obtained from the Dispense Pen during the off standby mode by depressing the PROCESS control button twice in quick succession, this will start the recirculation pump and enable water to be dispensed. PURELAB UHQ PS Operator Manual ELGA Fig. 2 Purification Technologies Within the PURELAB UHQ PS The PURELAB UHQ PS water quality is detected just before the Dispense Pen and is measured in MegaOhm-cm. The quality level is indicated on the right-hand bar scale display (over a 2 to 18 MegaOhm-cm range) on the front facia panel (see Fig. 3). During the PROCESS cycle and subsequent recirculation, the prepurified make-up water is prevented from automatically refilling the reservoir as this would reduce the quality of already processed water. To eliminate re-contamination of the purified water, inert grades of plastic have been selected for all wetted parts. This allows strong cleaning agents and disinfectants to be used when carrying out the special cleaning procedures for critical applications described in Section 6. The PURELAB UHQ PS covers are constructed from robust polyurethane moulded materials and supported on a coated steel chassis. The reservoir is protected from the ingress of airborne microorganisms, carbon dioxide and volatile organics, by the composite vent filter cartridge which filters all air entering the reservoir. For full technical specification of the PURELAB UHQ PS unit see Table 1. Fig. 3 Front Panel Layout Page 6 PURELAB UHQ PS Version 11-09/07

ELGA PURELAB UHQ PS Operator Manual Alternative Method If a pressurised supply of pre-purified water is for Reservoir Refill not available, or it is not convenient to feed the inlet of the PURELAB UHQ PS unit from a storage tank with a positive head equivalent to 0.07bar (1psi); then direct filling into the PURELAB UHQ PS reservoir is permissible via the manual filler cap, see Fig. 1. Care should be taken when manually filling the reservoir not to overfill and wet the UHQ-4 Composite Vent Filter cartridge. The breather pipe for the UHQ-4 can be clearly seen protruding through the side of the filler neck. Hence: CAUTION! Stop the filling well below this breather pipe and do not fill up to the level of the pipe. If the UHQ-4 cartridge becomes wetted, it does not function and must be changed for a new UHQ-4 cartridge. 4.2 Unpacking 1. Carefully pull out the PURELAB UHQ PS from its carton and remove the top and bottom protective foam packing material. Lift the unit only from underneath, (not inclined) and position on the laboratory bench. 2. Check that the water fittings and electrical mains cable have been supplied. These are contained in a separate pack which is also to be found in the PURELAB UHQ PS carton. 4.3 Installation 1. Position the unit in its desired operating location. 2. Remove the transit plug from the inlet connector at the rear of the unit. To remove transit plug depress dark grey collet and withdraw plug (see Fig. 4). Note: Fig. 5 illustrates the rear of the PURELAB UHQ PS and shows the position of the inlet connections. 3. Insert a length of 8mm (5/16") OD flexible tube into the inlet connector and connect this tube to the feedwater supply. A 0.2µm filter should now be installed at a convenient point in the feedwater supply to the PURELAB UHQ PS unit. 4. Fit a 3 Amp fused mains plug to the electrical cable supplied with the unit. The mains cable supplied has a moulded plug to IEC.320.C14 Standard and should be inserted into the socket at the rear of the unit. The PURELAB UHQ PS is also supplied fitted with 2 x 2 Amp fuses in the power inlet module at the rear of the unit (see Fig. 5) (To check, simply prise open the fuse holder cover and snap-shut afterwards). Only the green POWER light will be illuminated on the front facia panel. 4. Press the REFILL button. The green POWER light and red REFILL lights will both be illuminated. As the reservoir fills, the VOLUME bar scale display will rise. At this stage, ignore the QUALITY bar scale display. 5. Leave the unit until the VOLUME scale indicates 100% showing that the reservoir is full. The red REFILL light will switch off automatically when the reservoir is full and the make-up flow will stop. 6. Once the reservoir is fully filled (100% level on VOLUME scale).look for the tubing that is connected to the white tap near the top of the PURELAB UHQ PS (see Fig. 6), and direct it into a drain, sink or vessel capable of holding 5 litres. At this stage, the two vertical rigid by-pass tubes should be left in place as shown (see Fig. 6). 7. Open the white tap to allow the water to pass to drain and push the PROCESS control button on the facia panel. Water will be pumped from the reservoir to drain. This process will flush the UHQ-7, Ultra Microfiltration cartridge. During the first few minutes periodically bleed the air from the UHQ-7 cartridge by loosening the cap on the air bleed nipple, located on the side of the cartridge (see Fig. 6) and re-tightening when the air has been released. Note: This flush water will contain traces of a bacteriostatic agent which is added to the ultra microfiltration cartridge, both during transit and storage. The pump will automatically switch off after approximately 5 minutes and the flow to drain will cease. 8. When the reservoir is empty, the UHQ-1 and UHQ-2 cartridges can be connected. Firstly, disconnect the two rigid by-pass links by pulling them out from the flexible interconnecting tubing and storing them away safely for future use. 9. Pull off the protective caps from the ends of the two cartridges (UHQ-1 and UHQ-2), and connect them up as shown in Fig. 7, by simply pushing on the flexible silicon interconnecting tubing, ensuring there are no kinks or twists. 10. Refill the reservoir again by pressing the REFILL button. 11. Once the reservoir is fully filled (100% level on volume scale) ensure white tap is open and press the PROCESS button to start pump. This will drain the contents of the reservoir via the UHQ-1 and UHQ-2 cartridges just fitted. Note: It is important that during the first few minutes air is bled from the UHQ-7 cartridge as detailed in step 7. The pump will stop after approximately 5 minutes. Page 12 PURELAB UHQ PS Version 11-09/07

ELGA PURELAB UHQ PS Operator Manual 12. Turn off the white tap. Remove the drain tubing and retain for future use. Refit the right-hand cover and lock in place with the four ¼ turn fasteners. 13. The unit is now ready for normal daily use and the operation of the unit is as follows. 14. Push the REFILL button. The red REFILL light will illuminate. Fig. 7 PURELAB UHQ PS With Cartridges Fitted 15. Push the PROCESS button. The amber PROCESS light will illuminate. Note: The PURELAB UHQ PS s purification processing will now start and continue as the reservoir is filling up. It will continue for a full 10 minutes after the reservoir has reached its full (100%) level. 16. The REFILL light will go off when the reservoir is full (100%). 17. The PROCESS light will go off automatically after 10 minutes of recycling the full contents of the reservoir, and the READY light will illuminate to indicate the PURELAB UHQ PS quality levels have been achieved. PURELAB UHQ PS Version 11-09/07 Page 13

PURELAB UHQ PS Operator Manual ELGA 18. The PURELAB UHQ PS unit incorporates an intermittent recirculation feature which will allow the unit to operate for a further 10 minutes after the READY light is illuminated, after which time the recirculation pump will switch off and the READY light will be flashing. The unit will stay in this stand-by mode for 60 minutes, after which time the recirculation pump will restart for 10 minutes and then switch off for 60 minutes, this sequence is repeated every hour. 19. To dispense water, remove the Dispense Pen from its well and by depressing the spring loaded valve at the top of the Pen with an index finger or thumb, water can be dispensed at a controlled rate. The dispense valve can be locked on (to maintain the dispense without using a finger or thumb) by rotating the dispense valve clockwise while in the depressed position, to release turn anticlockwise. Note: To dispense water during the off stand-by periods as described in step 18, it will be necessary to depress the PROCESS button twice to start the recirculation pump. Once the pump has started wait until quality reading reaches the desired level, and then dispense water. Depending upon the speed of depressing the PROCESS button twice in succession, the pump will run for either 10 minutes or 20 minutes before switching off i.e. a) Depressing twice quickly - pump will run 10 minutes. b) Depressing twice slowly - pump will run 20 minutes (i.e. PRESS - wait 3 seconds - PRESS). 20. Return the Dispense Pen to its irradiated well when not in use. Page 14 PURELAB UHQ PS Version 11-09/07

They are illustrated in Fig. 8 and are called: UHQ-1 - Adsorption Cartridge UHQ-2 - Ion Exchange Cartridge UHQ-7 - Ultra Microfiltration Cartridge UHQ-4 - Composite Vent Filter UHQ-6 - UV Lamp Tube. All cartridges except the UHQ-6 (UV) cartridges are accessible after removing the right-hand side cover by undoing the four ¼ turn fasteners and withdrawing the cover sideways. The UHQ-6 UV lamp tube is under the front cover. Always check that the electrical power supply to the PURELAB UHQ PS and the switch on the power inlet module at the rear of the PURELAB UHQ PS are switched off before attempting to change PURELAB UHQ PS cartridges. WARNING! IF REPLACING UHQ-1, UHQ-2 AND UHQ- 7 CARTRIDGES AT THE SAME TIME, THE UHQ-7 CARTRIDGES SHOULD BE FITTED FIRST AND RINSED AS PER SECTION 6.3 AND THEN THE UHQ-1 AND UHQ-2 CARTRIDGES FITTED AS PER SECTION 6.1 AND 6.2. After replacing the UHQ-1, UHQ-2 and UHQ-7 cartridges it is recommended that the first full reservoir of treated water produced is discarded. Frequency of Cartridge Replacements The following frequency of cartridge replacement is recommended for typical usage when fed with purified water: UHQ-1 and UHQ-2 every three months (maximum) or earlier if indicated on quality display (change both at same time). UHQ-7 and UHQ-4 every four months. UHQ-6 every twelve months. Information on shelf-life and availability of replacement cartridge packs is given in Section 8. PURELAB UHQ PS Version 11-09/07 Page 15

ELGA PURELAB UHQ PS Operator Manual 3. Remove the silicon tubing from the bottom of the UHQ- 7 cartridge (see Fig. 9) and then by holding the body of the cartridge unscrew the cartridge anti-clockwise from the fixed top connector. There is no need to remove the bottom connector at this stage. 4. Having removed cartridge from unit, unscrew the bottom connector from the UHQ-7 cartridge body and place connector to one side for later use. The old UHQ- 7 cartridge can be discarded. WARNING! THE WEARING OF RUBBER GLOVES AND GLASSES IS ADVISED. 5. Unpack a new UHQ-7 cartridge from its sealed bag. The cartridge is supplied with an aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide as a bacteriostat. To speed up the rinsing of the cartridge, both end caps on the new cartridge should be carefully removed and the contents poured to drain. 6. Holding the new cartridge upright so that the label can be read, the bottom connector removed in Step 4 can now be screwed onto the bottom of the UHQ-7 cartridge. Note: Ensure O ring is located inside connector prior to fitting. 7. Refit the new cartridge into the top connector in the PURELAB UHQ unit by screwing clockwise until hand tight. CAUTION! Do not over-tighten and cross thread. Tighten up only until resistance is felt against its sealing in the top container. 8. Refit silicon tubing to the bottom connector. 9. Reconnect electrical supply to unit, and mains water supply. 10. It is necessary to rinse the new UHQ-7 cartridge just fitted by passing one tank full of water to drain via the UHQ-7 cartridge. If tank is empty press REFILL button and let the reservoir refill. 11. Open white tap and place silicon tube attached to tap to convenient sink or drain point. 12. When tank is full press PROCESS button and allow tank contents to pass to drain. During this time the UHQ-7 cartridge should be bled of air by loosening the cap of the bleed nipple (see Fig. 9) until all the air is expelled. The cap should then be retightened. 13. When pump stops at low level the white tap should be closed. 14. The new UHQ-7 cartridge has now been fitted and rinsed. New UHQ-1 and UHQ-2 cartridges should now be fitted as described in Sections 6.1 and 6.2. 6.5 Replacing the UHQ-4 Composite Vent Filter 1. Remove the connecting tube from the top of the UHQ-4 Composite Vent Filter (see Fig. 9). 2. Pull the exhausted UHQ-4 filter away from its retaining clips and discard. 3. Fit the new UHQ-4 Composite Vent Filter into its retaining clips and then connect the tube (see Fig. 9). PURELAB UHQ PS Version 11-09/07 Page 19

PURELAB UHQ PS Operator Manual ELGA 6.6 Replacing the UHQ-6 UV Lamp 1. Turn off the feedwater and switch off the electrical supply to the PURELAB UHQ PS, and pull the cable and plug out of the PURELAB UHQ PS socket. 2. Remove the left and right side covers from the unit. 3. Remove the 4 fixing screws holding the front cover to the framework. These are accessible at the back corners of the front cover, having removed the two side covers. 4. When standing at the front of the unit, rotate the front panel, about its left-handed, vertical edge to expose the electronics compartment. Care should be taken to ensure no strain is applied to the two ribbon cables connecting the main power circuit board to the display circuit board. 5. The UV housing can now be seen at the bottom of the electronics compartment below the main power circuit board. The UV housing has a white coloured body with two elbow connectors fitted top and bottom, and two grey coloured caps. 6. Remove the old UV lamp by carefully prising off the white coloured end clips (see Fig. 10) and wires situated at either end of the UV housing end caps. Once the end clips have been removed, the lamp can be eased out of the housing. 7. Slide in a new lamp and reconnect the white end clips, ensuring the new lamp is not contaminated with fingermarks, as these will reduce the efficiency of the UV lamp. 8. Refit the PURELAB UHQ PS front and side covers, then plug the cable into the inlet power module, switch on the electrical supply, and then the feedwater supply. ELGA PURELAB UHQ PS Operator Manual 7. SPECIAL CLEANING FOR CRITICAL APPLICATIONS The following special cleaning procedures, using hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), may be found beneficial for PURELAB UHQ PS users who require to maintain the lowest TOC or bacterial levels. The frequency of such a special clean will depend on many factors and cannot be predicted. As well as prior to critical applications, the special cleans would be of obvious benefit after a period of prolonged storage or non-use of the PURELAB UHQ PS. The procedure can be carried out at any time, by fitting the two vertical by-pass tubes supplied with each PURELAB UHQ PS when new. The procedure involves the recirculation of H 2 O 2 solution and four subsequent rinses using pre-purified water. The procedure for cleaning is as follows: 1. Remove the UHQ-1 and UHQ-2 cartridges, both of which are incompatible with H 2 O 2. The UHQ-7 Ultra Microfiltration cartridge is compatible and can be left in place during recirculation. 2. Fit the two rigid vertical by-pass tubes and push-fit the flexible interconnecting tubes as shown in Fig. 6. 3. Check that the PURELAB UHQ PS is connected to the mains power and the POWER light is illuminated. 4. If the PURELAB UHQ PS has not been used for prolonged periods, empty the reservoir as follows: Open the white tap to allow the water to pass to drain and push the PROCESS control button on the facia panel. Water will be pumped from the reservoir to drain. 5. Fill the reservoir with pre-purified water, by pushing the REFILL button or, manually, using good quality deionised or distilled water through the top cap. 6. Add 140 ml of 30% w/v H 2 O 2 (100 volumes) and manually mix thoroughly. 7. Press the PROCESS button (the PROCESS light illuminates) and allow the unit to recirculate for 20 minutes. Ignore the illuminated READY light. During this time, periodically (1 minute approximately every 10 minutes), dispense the H 2 O 2 solution from the Dispense Pen back into the top of the reservoir. This allows the pen tip to be fully disinfected. 8. After 20 minutes drain the reservoir by connecting the tube to the white tap, described previously in Step 4. 9. Refill the reservoir as previously described in Step 5 (automatically, or manually). 10. Push the PROCESS button and recirculate for 5 minutes. 11. Again, drain the reservoir as previously described in Step 4 and flush the pen tip by periodically dispensing water back to the reservoir during each rinse. 12. Repeat steps (9) - (11) a further 3 times. 13. After the fourth rinse disconnect the two rigid vertical by-pass tubes and refit the new replacement UHQ-1 and UHQ-2 cartridges as described in Sections 6.1 and 6.2.
