Project Summary BACKGROUND: The applicant, PHD Hair Design, represented by Brandon Chin of Wellcom Sign, proposes one (1) illuminated channel letter wall sign and two (2) tenant panels in the existing multi-tenant ground sign for the tenant at 611 Milwaukee Avenue. The proposed wall sign includes 17.2-inch uppercase and 11.75-inch and 16.75-inch lowercase ivory PHD hair design illuminated channel letters with dark bronze returns and trim caps. The proposed letter color will be ivory #2146 which complies with the tenant sign criteria of the center. The illuminated channel letters will be mounted to a wireway 2.75-inches wide by 6.5-inches tall. The proposed tenant panel includes 6.0-inch PHD hair design text in Oracal Red #031 and opaque Ivory background to match the tenant sign criteria of the center. Appearance Commission Review APPEARANCE PLAN COMMENTS: Staff comments after evaluating the proposal for compliance with the Appearance Plan: Sign Criteria from Appearance Plan: Compatibility with building architecture Compatibility with signs on adjoining buildings Harmony with surrounding landscape Good scale in relationship to surroundings Use of harmonious colors Staff comments: o The applicant should confirm that the proposed vinyl material for the tenant panel will be completely opaque and that no translucent lighting will be visible through the proposed material. If necessary, two (2) applications of the proposed material may be required to ensure the panel face will be opaque. o The petitioner shall furnish material and color samples of all proposed signage for review by the Appearance Commission. POTENTIAL NEIGHBORHOOD IMPACTS: Retail uses border the property on the north and south with residential to the rear. No signage is proposed for the rear façade and thus no negative impacts are anticipated. 8
