NATIONAL DAY The day 14 th april reminds us about the devastating explosion cum fire, which broke out on april 1944 in a ship namely s.s. fort stikine [containing lubrication oil drums, ammunition and explosives, bales of cotton, heavy timbers scrap iron, old dynamites and wireless ssets in layers etc.] Moored in the victoria dock of mumbai ports. The intensity of explosion followed by a high magnitude of fire spread with lightening speed, across surrounding docks. These fire even engulfed the nearby residential area, also and resulted in hugh toll of valuable life and property before it could be controlled. During the course of fire fighting operation 68 officers and 87 fireman of mumbai fire service lost their life and set an example of superman sacrifice for the course of humanity and social well-being. In the year of 1963. The government of indian therefore decided that 14 th april will be observed as a national fire service day every year by all fire services of the country to pay homage to the fireman, who lost their lives in taming the big blaze originated due to explosion cum-fire in victoria dock, mumbai, on 14 th april and aslo in the subsequent years.

The observance of fire service day provides a unique opportunity to educate the employees, workers and executives working in any establishment and also to various people of the society in adopting various fire prevention measures and also to give first aid fire fighting training in order to make them conversant to tackle the fire emergencies in its incipient stage. Thus averting a fire incident timely, which otherwise could be reason of major fire incidents Fire precauion costs nothing but fire fighting does. Life is too valuable to be lost save it, prevent fire Common causes of industrial fires LEAKS AND SPILLAGE OF FLAMMABLE/COMBUSTIBLE MATERIAL ELECTRICAL SHORT CIRCUITING /OVERLOADING OVER HEATED BAR SURFACES /HEATERS/ELECTRIC LAMPS. WELDING/CUTTING/SOLDERING AND OTHER HOT WORK EQUIPMENT FAILURE. SMOKING IN PROHIBITED AREA. CHEMICAL REACTION /RUNWAY REACTION. FRICIONAL HEAT/SPARK SPONTANEOUS COMBUSTION. STAIC SPARKS /COMBUSTION SPARKS. NAKED LIVE WIRE. MOLTEN SUBSTANCES. Basic preventive measures ENSURE HIGH HOUSEKEEPING STANDARD. COVER TRASH CONTAINERS TIGHTLY AND EMPTY THEM REGULARLY. SEGREGATE FLAMMABLE MATERIAL FROM SOURCE OF IGNITION.

PROMPTLY ELIMINATE OIL/GAS LEAKS AND CLEAN SPILLAGE OF FLAMMABLE MATERIAL STRICTLY ADHERE TO WORK PERMIT INSTRUCTION FOR WELDING/CUTTING AND OTHER HOT WORK IN AREAS WHERE FLAMMABLE ARE PRESENT. STORE INCOMPATIBLE CHEMICAL SEPARATELY. WHERE FLAMMABLE ARE STORED AND USED ENSURE ADEQUATE VENTILATION, PROHIBITS SMOKING AND USE FLAME PROOF ELECTRIC EQUIPMENT S. KEEP FUSES AND CONTROL BOXES CLEAN AND CLOSED. AVOID MULTI SOCKET CONNECTIONS. ELECTRICAL REPAIR SHOULD BE CARRIED OUT BY QUALIFIED PERSONNEL. DON T USE DAMAGED ELECTRIC CORDS AND AVOID TEMPORARY CONNECTIONS. LUBRICATE, MAINTAIN AND ALIGN ALL MACHINES/EQUIPMENTS TO PREVENT GENERATION OF HEAT. General fire precautions in industries Do s 1. MAINTAIN GOOD HOUSEKEEPING STANDARDS. 2. COLLECT WASTE IN MEAL CANS AND DISPOSE OF AT A REGULAR INTERVAL. 3. STORE FLAMMABLE LIQUIDS, GASES, SOLVENTS, CHEMICAL IN STABLE RACKS, CORRECTLY LABELLED AND IN COOL & DRY PLACE AWAY FROM HEAT. 4. USE FUSES AND CIRCUIT BREAKERS OF CORRECT CAPACITY. 5. REMOVE CHANCES OF SPONTANEOUS COMBUSTION. 6. KEEP ALL THE MACHINERY CLEAN AND FREE OF WASTE AND DUST. 7. LUBRICANT MACHINERY TO AVOID FRICTION & OVERHEATING. 8. CHECK ELECTRICAL CABLES /WIRING/LIGHTNING/FITTINGS AND OTHER EQUIPMENT PERIODICALLY TO PREVENT SHORT CIRCUIT. 9. ENSURE PROPER EARTHING OF ALL EQUIPMENT TO PREVENT FIRE DUE TO STATIC CHARGE. 10. FOR WELDING & CUTTING, OBTAIN PWT AND TAKE ALL PRECAUTIONS AS PRESCRIBED TO PREVENT FIRE. 11. SWITCH OFF ALL THE LIGHTS, FANS, AC MACHINE ETC. BEFORE CLOSING THE OFFICES. 12. ARREST LEAKAGE/SPILLAGES OF OIL, LDO, HFO ETC. Don t s 13. DON T SMOKE IN PROHIBITED PLACES AND STRIKE MATCHES. 14. DON T USE DAMAGED CORDS AND AVOID TEMPORARY CONNECTION. 15. DON T LEAVE OPEN FIRE UNATTENDED. 16. DON T PLUG MANY ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES IN ONE SOCKET. 17. DON T PLACE OBSTRUCTIONS IN MEANS IF ESCAPE, NEAR FIRE HYDRANT & EXTINGUISHERS.
