1 Overview In this reference manual, you will learn how to successfully integrate a Kaleidescape System with an Elan control system using VIA! 6.4 color touch panels. Connecting to Kaleidescape Section 2 describes how to connect an Elan system to a Kaleidescape System. Configuring Music Zone Control Section 3 explains how to configure a Movie Player so that you can control any Music Zone in your System from the OSD. Importing the Template Section 4 explains how to import the Kaleidescape template into your Elan project. Appendices The appendices show how Kaleidescape control appears on an Elan VIA! 6.4 color touch panel and list the commands available through IR code control. Kaleidescape Programming Manual for Elan Home Systems 7/08 1

2 Connecting to Kaleidescape 2.1 IR Control The Kaleidescape Elan implementation uses an IR connection to control the Kaleidescape Player. Kaleidescape chose this connection method since all Elan VIA! 6.4 touch panels can send IR codes without any additional hardware and the IR codes provide all the required control options. 2.2 Connecting the IR-IN Port The IR output from the Elan system can be plugged into the IR IN connector on the rear of the Kaleidescape Player. Internally, the IR IN connector is wired to an emitter at the front of the Player there is no need to place an IR bug on the front of the Player. A simple mono mini male to mini male cable (such as Elan s IRIC IR Interconnect cable) can be used to connect the systems. 2.3 Connecting Video Output To use the overlay feature of the Elan touch panel, connect the composite video output of the Kaleidescape Player to the Elan system. Since Kaleidescape Players can be configured to have all video outputs live simultaneously, the composite video can be shown on a touch panel while the HDMI video is shown on the main display. 3 Configuring Music Zone Control Music Zone Control is an optional feature of the Kaleidescape System that allows a single Movie Player to control any Music Zone in the System. With Music Zone Control enabled, you can change which Music Zone the Player is controlling from the Now Playing area of the Player s OSD. The Now Playing area of the OSD displays information for the music that is playing in the Music Zone currently controlled by the Player. Playback controls only affect the Music Zone the Player is currently controlling, independent of what the local Music Zone may be playing. If your installation has multiple Music Zones, the VIA! touch panel will control the Music Zone currently controlled by the Player. If you want to change which Music Zone the VIA! touch panel is controlling, do so from the Player s OSD. You can enable the Music Zone Control option in the Installer Web Utility. To set Music Zone Control: 1. Open the Kaleidescape Installer Web Utility. 2. On the COMPONENTS tab, enter a name for each Music Zone in the Name of Music Zone text box(es). Name all the Music Zones in the System, including the single Music Zone of each Movie Player. Give the Music Zones easily understood names such as Sunroom, Dining Room, John s Music, or Baby s Music. You will choose from these zones names in the OSD when you pick a zone to control. Note If you name a Music Zone Unused, it will not appear as an OSD choice. Kaleidescape Programming Manual for Elan Home Systems 7/08 3

3. On the PREFERENCES tab, select Movie Players are allowed to control all Music Zones in the System. 4. Click Save Changes. To select a Music Zone from the OSD: 1. On the Movie Player OSD select the Now Playing OSD location. Kaleidescape Programming Manual for Elan Home Systems 7/08 4

2. Select Control Zone. You are presented with the available Music Zones in the System by the names you assigned to them in the Installer Web Utility. 3. Select the Music Zone you want to control from the list. Now whenever you choose music, you will be reminded that you are controlling a nonlocal Music Zone and be given an option to play the chosen music in that zone. You could also then choose a different Music Zone to control. Kaleidescape Programming Manual for Elan Home Systems 7/08 5

4 Importing the Template The process of importing the Kaleidescape Elan template into your Elan project follows these steps. Unzip the template Import the IR file Import the overlay Import the layout You also can configure the touch panel to display video from the Player with control using the touch panel overlay feature. 4.1 Unzip the Template 1. Unzip the archive into a folder such as the ELAN Transfer folder on the C drive. 2. In VIA! Tools, open the Elan project to which you want to add Kaleidescape control. 4.2 Import the IR File 1. Select Import from the Tools drop down menu. The Import Templates dialog box appears. Kaleidescape Programming Manual for Elan Home Systems 7/08 6

2. Select IR Files and click Import. 3. Select the Kaleidescape_Player.IRFile_ZIP file from the folder where you unzipped the template and click Open. 4.3 Import the Overlay 1. Select the touch panel to which you are adding Kaleidescape controls. 2. Click the Overlay button. 3. Click Add/Remove/Save. 4. Click Add page from a file. 5. Type ʺKaleidescapeʺ to name the overlay function page and click OK. 6. Select the Kaleidescape Overlay Page.OFT file in the folder where you unzipped the template and click Open. 7. Click DONE. 8. Select the file Kaleidescape Source Pages.vst in the folder where you unzipped the template and click Open. 9. Click DONE. 4.5 Configuring the Overlay Feature If you want Kaleidescape video to be visible on the touch panel, you must set the source pages to use the overlay. 1. Select the Layout button. 2. In the panel preview, click the Kscape button (or whatever name you ve given it). 3. From Special Function Buttons, select Switch to Video Mode and Source Override. 4.
