SECTION 210500 SPRINKLERS PART 1 & GENERAL 1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions and Division 01 Specification Sections, apply to this Section. 1.2 SUMMARY A. This Section includes the following fire&suppression piping inside the building: 1. Wet&pipe sprinkler systems. B. Related Sections include the following: 1. Division 10 Section "Fire Extinguisher Cabinets" and "Fire Extinguishers" for cabinets and fire extinguishers. 2. Division 28 Section "Fire Detection and Alarm" for alarm devices not specified in this Section. 1.3 DEFINITIONS A. Underground Service&Entrance Piping: Underground service piping below the building. 1.4 SYSTEM DESCRIPTIONS A. Wet&Pipe Sprinkler System: Automatic sprinklers are attached to piping containing water and that is connected to water supply. Water discharges immediately from sprinklers when they are opened. Sprinklers open when heat melts fusible link or destroys frangible device. Hose connections are included if indicated. 1.5 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS A. Standard Piping System Component Working Pressure: Listed for at least 175 psig. B. Delegated Design: Design sprinkler system(s), including comprehensive engineering analysis by a qualified professional engineer, using performance requirements and design criteria indicated. C. Fire&suppression sprinkler system design shall be approved by authorities having jurisdiction. 1. Margin of Safety for Available Water Flow and Pressure: 10 percent, including losses through water&service piping, valves, and backflow preventers. Light&Hazard Occupancy: 0.10 gpm over 1500&sq. ft. area. b. Ordinary&Hazard, Group 1 Occupancy: 0.15 gpm over 1500&sq. ft. area. c. Ordinary&Hazard, Group 2 Occupancy: 0.2 gpm over 1500&sq. ft. area. 4. Minimum Density for Automatic&Sprinkler Piping Design: a. Offices, Public Areas, Labs and Classrooms: 225 sq. ft. b. Mechanical Equipment Rooms and Electrical Equipment Rooms: 130 sq. ft. c. Other Areas: According to NFPA 13 recommendations, unless otherwise indicated. 5. Total Combined Hose&Stream Demand Requirement: According to NFPA 13, unless otherwise indicated: a. Light&Hazard Occupancies: 100 gpm for 30 minutes. b. Ordinary&Hazard Occupancies: 250 gpm for 60 to 90 minutes. 1.6 SUBMITTALS A. Product Data: For the following: 1. Piping materials, including sprinkler specialty fittings. 2. Pipe hangers and supports. 3. Valves, including listed fire&protection valves, unlisted general&duty valves, and specialty valves and trim. 4. Sprinklers, escutcheons, and guards. Include sprinkler flow characteristics, mounting, finish, and other pertinent data. 5. Fire department connections, including type; number, size, and arrangement of inlets; caps and chains; size and direction of outlet; escutcheon and marking; and finish. 6. Alarm devices, including electrical data. B. Shop Drawings: For wet&pipe sprinkler systems. Include plans, elevations, sections, details, and attachments to other work. 1. Wiring Diagrams: For power, signal, and control wiring. C. Delegated&Design Submittal: For sprinkler systems indicated to comply with performance requirements and design criteria, including analysis data signed and sealed by the qualified professional engineer responsible for their preparation. D. Approved Sprinkler Piping Drawings: Working plans, prepared according to NFPA 13, that have been approved by authorities having jurisdiction, including hydraulic calculations, if applicable. E. Fire&hydrant flow test report. F. Field Test Reports and Certificates: Indicate and interpret test results for compliance with performance requirements and as described in NFPA 13. Include "Contractor's Material and Test Certificate for Aboveground Piping". G. Field quality&control test reports. H. Operation and Maintenance Data: For sprinkler specialties to include in emergency, operation, and maintenance manuals. 1.7 QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Installer Qualifications: 1. Installer's responsibilities include designing, fabricating, and installing sprinkler systems and providing professional engineering services needed to assume engineering responsibility. Base calculations on results of fire&hydrant flow test. a. Engineering Responsibility: Preparation of working plans, calculations, and field test reports by a qualified professional engineer. B. Electrical Components, Devices, and Accessories: Listed and labeled as defined in NFPA 70, by a qualified testing agency, and marked for intended location and application. C. NFPA Standards: Fire&suppression&system equipment, specialties, accessories, installation, and testing shall comply with the following: 1. NFPA 13, "Installation of Sprinkler Systems." 1.8 PROJECT CONDITIONS A. Interruption of Existing Sprinkler Service: Do not interrupt sprinkler service to facilities occupied by Owner or others unless permitted under the following conditions and then only after arranging to provide temporary sprinkler service according to requirements indicated: 1. Notify Owner no fewer than two days in advance of proposed interruption of sprinkler service. 2. A. Coordinate layout and installation of sprinklers with other construction that penetrates ceilings, including light fixtures, HVAC equipment, and partition assemblies. 1.10 EXTRA MATERIALS A. Furnish extra materials described below that match products installed and that are packaged with protective covering for storage and identified with labels describing contents. 1. Sprinkler Cabinets: Finished, wall&mounting, steel cabinet with hinged cover, with space for minimum of six spare sprinklers plus sprinkler wrench. Include number of sprinklers required by NFPA 13 and sprinkler wrench. Include separate cabinet with sprinklers and wrench for each type of sprinkler on Project. PART 2 & PRODUCTS 2.1 MANUFACTURERS A. In other Part 2 articles where titles below introduce lists, the following requirements apply to product selection: 1. Available Manufacturers: Subject to compliance with requirements, manufacturers offering products that may be incorporated into the Work include, but are not limited to, manufacturers specified. 2. Gaskets: AWWA C111, rubber. B. Grooved&End, Ductile&Iron Pipe: AWWA C151, with factory& or field&formed, radius&cut& grooved ends according to AWWA C606. 1. Grooved&Joint Piping Systems: a. Manufacturers: 1) Victaulic Co. of America. b. Pressure Rating: 175 psig. c. Grooved&End Fittings: ASTM A 536, ductile&iron casting with OD matching ductile&iron&pipe OD. d. Grooved&End&Pipe Couplings: AWWA C606, gasketed fitting matching ductile&iron&pipe OD. Include ductile&iron housing with keys matching ductile&iron&pipe and fitting grooves, prelubricated rubber gasket with center leg, and steel bolts and nuts. e. Grooved&End&Pipe Transition Coupling: UL 213 and AWWA C606, gasketed fitting with end matching ductile&iron&pipe OD and end matching steel&pipe OD. Include ductile&iron housing with key matching ductile&iron&pipe groove and key matching steel&pipe groove, prelubricated rubber gasket listed for use with housing, and steel bolts and nuts. Comply with requirements for identification specified in Division 26. 3.15 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL A. Perform the following field tests and inspections and prepare test reports: 1. Leak Test: After installation, charge system and test for leaks. Repair leaks and retest until no leaks exist. 2. Test and adjust controls and safeties. UL Underwriters Laboratories Inc. A. Furnish and install all items of work shown on the drawings within the specifications, and in compliance with all governing codes and agencies. All references in this specification to "applicable codes" or "governing agencies" shall include the following: 1. Illinois Plumbing Code and associated building codes. 2. National Fire Protection Association. 3. All other local or county ordinances. B. Provide everything essential for the completion of the work to make the system ready for normal and proper operation; including all work or materials not directly shown on the drawings or in the specifications, but necessary for the proper operation of the system. C. It shall be the responsibility of the Plumbing Contractor to visit the site and verify all existing conditions affecting his work, and he shall adapt his work to fit all existing conditions and meet with approval of all governing bodies. Failure to do so will not result in award of additional payment, for it is to be understood that tender of proposal carries with it the agreement to furnish a system whole and complete, ready for the test and operation and duly approved by agencies as previously noted herein. D. It is the responsibility of the Plumbing Contractor to thoroughly examine the plans for compliance to all codes and notify the Engineer of any deficiencies prior to bidding the project. Once the bid proposal is accepted, the Contractor will not be granted extras for compliance to any changes that the Inspector may require. E. All work shall be performed to the satisfaction of the Architect and Owner. Secure all permits and licenses applicable to this Division; pay all fees and post all bonds incidental thereto. F. Materials shall conform to the standards prescribed by all local codes and governing agencies. When required, the Plumbing Contractor shall obtain approval prior to installation. G. All materials, piping, fixtures and equipment required for the work shall be new, of first-class quality and shall be furnished, delivered, erected, connected and finished in every detail and shall be so selected and arranged as to fit into the building spaces. H. Furnish and install complete plumbing system as herein specified. I. Provide and install fire stopping and fire-rated assemblies as specified herein and in architectural sections. J. Site utilities are existing; see required modifications and necessary site work required by this contractor below. K. The sanitary building drains will be terminated 5 outside the building wall by the Plumbing Contractor; provide transition to appropriate materials per Code. The Plumbing Contractor is also responsible for all sanitary site underground utilities to reconnect to existing sanitary outside the building at sufficiently deep invert. L. WORK NOT INCLUDED 1. On site painting, unless herein specified is by others. 2. Toilet partitions and toilet room accessories provided by the General Contractor, including but not limited to paper holders, soap dishes, grab bars, towel bars, etc. is by others. 3. Electrical Contractor shall provide disconnect switches, install all starters and control devices furnished by the Plumbing Contractor, and do all line voltage wiring. Starters and control panels are provided by Plumbing Contractor and installed by Electrical Contractor. 4. The underground domestic water service into the building is existing to remain. 5. The storm building drains are existing to remain. 1.4 JURISDICTION OF WORK A. Plans and specifications of this Division are intended for a complete project. If union jurisdiction requires that portions of the work be done by other tradesmen, this contractor shall sublet those portions of the work to qualified contractors. However, this contractor shall be held fully responsible for all such installations. 1.5 SUBMITTALS A. SHOP DRAWINGS B. See Division 1 requirements. 1. Shop drawings shall include, but are not limited to, the following items and equipment: a. Drains and cleanouts; b. Piping materials; c. Valves; d. e. Pressure reducing valves; f. Fire rated assemblies; g. Access panels; h. Circulating pump; i. Insulation; j. Water heaters; k. Plumbing fixtures and specialties. 2. Approval of shop drawings in no way relieves the contractor from his responsibility of providing equipment and materials or performing work as required by the Contract Drawings and Specifications or required by Code. 3. Approval of these shop drawings shall not be construed as license to supersede the construction documents. 4. Where any specific equipment, materials, process or method of construction is specified by name or by reference to the catalog number of a manufacturer, the specifications are to be used as a guide and are not intended to take precedence over the basic duty and performance specified or noted on the drawings. C. RECORD DRAWINGS; 1. See Division 1 requirements. 2. The Contractor shall provide the Engineer a set of "red-lined" drawings at the completion of the project to indicate "as-built" revisions. D. OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS AND MAINTENANCE MANUALS: PART 2 - PRODUCTS 1. See Division 1 requirements. 2. Upon completion of all work and tests, the Plumbing Contractor shall furnish the necessary qualified personnel for operating the systems as directed by and scheduled with the Architect and the Owner. At this time, the Contractor shall instruct the Owner or his representative in the operation, adjustment and maintenance of all equipment furnished. 3. Three (3) maintenance manuals shall be submitted, which shall present full details for care, maintenance and operation of all equipment and systems. 2.1 SUBSTITUTION OF EQUIPMENT A. See architectural sections for allowable substitutions and procedures for submittal. B. Assume responsibility for all costs incurred resulting from substitution of equipment as well as the performance of such equipment. Engineering fees required to re-design any portion of the plumbing system due to Contractors equipment substitutions shall be covered by the Contractor. C. Shop drawing approval must be obtained before any substitution of equipment. 2.2 TEMPORARY UTILITIES A. Provide temporary water and sanitary facilities as specified in Division 1 requirements. B. Remove temporary water piping and sanitary facilities as directed by the Architect. PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.1 JOB CONDITIONS A. VISIT TO THE SITE: 1. Prior to submitting a bid, call to the attention of the Architect any materials or apparatus that is believed inadequate and to any necessary items of work omitted. Bidders are required to visit the premises, take measurements, verify all elevations shown on the plans and inspect existing conditions and limitations. No extras will be allowed because of misunderstandings as to the work involved in this or other Divisions. B. DIAGRAMS, MEASUREMENTS, FINAL LAYOUT PLANS: 1. Plans show the layout in general and approximate locations of piping, major equipment, etc., and shall be followed as closely as the actual construction of the building, work of other trades and the locations of equipment will permit. 2. All changes from the plans necessary to make the work of this Division conform to the building as constructed and to fit the work of other trades shall be made without extra cost. 3. Engineering fees required to re-design any portion of the plumbing system due to Contractors revisions shall be covered by the Contractor. 4. Drawings for this Division of the Work shall not be scaled for exact dimensions. Consult the Architectural and Structural drawings and details for all dimensions, locations of partitions, their construction and location of plumbing fixtures. C. SUPERVISION 1. Furnish the services of one or more experienced superintendents who shall be constantly in charge of all of the work included in or related to this Division. D. PROTECTION OF FINISHED WORK AND MATERIALS: 1. See Division 1 requirements. 2. Protect all materials and work performed under this Division from damage or injury that may be caused by other workmen and from the action of the elements. 3. Protect the materials and work performed by other Divisions, and the Owner's property from damage or injury arising from work in this Division. 4. Keep all piping and equipment capped, plugged, drained or otherwise protected including protection from freezing and by stoppage from building materials, sand or dirt, mortar, concrete, etc. E. CLEANING AND FINISHING: 1. See Division 1 requirements. 2. After all tests have been made and the system pronounced tight and satisfactory, the contractor shall go over all of his work and clean equipment, fixtures, piping, etc., and leave clean and in complete working order at final completion of the building. 3. The putting of new work, or any part thereof, into use, even though with the Owner's consent, shall not be construed to be an acceptance of the work on the part of the Owner, nor shall it be construed to obligate him in any way, to accept improper work or defective material.
