Provide, where indicated on the drawings, Wet-Pipe Sprinkler Systems: Automatic sprinklers are attached to piping containing water and that is connected to water supply. Water discharges immediately from sprinklers when they are opened. Sprinklers open when heat melts fusible link or destroys frangible device. G. Provide, where indicated on the drawings, Preaction Sprinkler Systems: Automatic sprinklers are attached to piping containing air. Actuation of fire-detection system in same area as sprinklers opens deluge valve, permitting water to flow into piping and to discharge from sprinklers that have opened. H. Provide roof hoses, cabinets, fire department connections or monitors if required by the local fire department or any authorities having jurisdiction. 1.5 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS A. Standard Piping System Component Working Pressure: Listed for at least 175 psig. B. Fire-suppression sprinkler system design shall be approved by authorities having jurisdiction 1. Margin of Safety for Available Water Flow and Pressure: 10 percent, including losses through water-service piping, valves, and backflow preventers. 2. Minimum Density for Automatic-Sprinkler Piping Design: See drawings for hazard classifications and densities. C. Seismic Performance: Fire-suppression piping shall be capable of withstanding the effects of earthquake motions determined according to NFPA 13 and ASCE 7, "Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures": Section 9, "Earthquake Loads. 1.6 SUBMITTALS FOR REVIEW A. Product Data: For the following: 1. Piping materials, including sprinkler specialty fittings. 2. Pipe hangers and supports including seismic restraints. 3. Valves, including listed fire-protection valves, unlisted general-duty valves, and specialty valves and trim. 4. Air compressors, including electrical data. 5. Sprinklers, escutcheons, and guards. Include sprinkler flow characteristics, mounting, finish, and other pertinent data. SPRINKLER SYSTEMS
3 6. Hose connections, including size, type, and finish. 7. Roof hose cabinets. 8. Monitors. 9. Fire department connections, including type; number, size, and arrangement of inlets; caps and chains; size and direction of outlet; escutcheon and marking; and finish. 10. Alarm devices, including electrical data. B. Shop Drawings: Diagram power, signal, and control wiring. C. Fire-hydrant flow test report. D. Approved Sprinkler Piping Drawings: Working plans, prepared according to NFPA 13, that have been approved by authorities having jurisdiction, including hydraulic calculations, if applicable. E. Field Test Reports and Certificates: Indicate and interpret test results for compliance with performance requirements and as described in NFPA 13. Include "Contractor's Material and Test Certificate for Aboveground Piping" and "Contractor's Material and Test Certificate for Underground Piping." F. Welding certificates. G. Field quality-control test reports. H. Operation and Maintenance Data: For sprinkler specialties to include in emergency, operation, and maintenance manuals. I. Submit shop drawings, product data, hydraulic calculations to engineer of record for review prior to submittal for code compliance. 1.7 SUBMITTALS AT PROJECT CLOSEOUT A. Project Record Documents: Record actual locations of sprinklers and deviations of piping from drawings. Indicate drain and test locations. B. Manufacturer's Certificate: Certify that system has been tested and meets or exceeds specified requirements and code requirements. C. Operation and Maintenance Data: Include components of system, servicing requirements, record drawings, inspection data, replacement part numbers and availability, and location and numbers of service depot. D. Warranty: Submit manufacturer warranty and ensure forms have been completed in Owner's name and registered with manufacturer. 1.8 QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Perform Work in accordance with NFPA 13 SPRINKLER SYSTEMS
4 B. Manufacturer Qualifications: Company specializing in manufacturing the Products specified in this section with minimum three years experience. C. Installer Qualifications: Company specializing in performing the work of this section with minimum three years documented experience approved by manufacturer. D. Design and install system under direct supervision of a licensed sprinkler contractor and installer. 1.9 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND PROTECTION A. Store products in shipping containers and maintain in place until installation. Provide temporary inlet and outlet caps. Maintain caps in place until installation. Store piping off the ground or floor. Piping installed with dirt and/or rust will be cleaned and painted! 1.10 EXTRA MATERIALS A. Provide extra sprinklers under provisions of NFPA 13. B. Provide suitable wrenches for each sprinkler type. C. Provide metal storage cabinet located adjacent to alarm valve. PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.1 MANUFACTURERS A. Gem. B. Star C. Viking. D. Reliable. 2.2 SPRINKLERS A. Suspended Ceiling: 1. Type: Semi-recessed pendant type with matching clamp on escutcheon plate. 2. Finish: Chrome plated or white enamel. 3. Escutcheon Plate Finish: To match head 4. Fusible Link: Fusible solder link type temperature rated for specific area hazard. B. Exposed Area Type: 1. Fusible Link: Fusible solder link type temperature rated for specific area hazard. E. Guards: Finish to match sprinkler finish. 2.3 PIPING SPECIALTIES A. Wet Pipe Sprinkler Alarm Valve: Check type valve with divided seat ring, rubber faced clapper to automatically actuate water motor alarm and electric alarm, with pressure retard chamber and variable pressure trim; with test and drain valve. B. Dry Pipe Sprinkler Alarm Valve: Check type valve with divided seat ring, rubber faced clapper to automatically actuate water motor alarm and electric alarm, with accelerator; with test and drain valve. C. Electric Alarm: Electrically operated red enameled gong with pressure alarm switch. D. Water Flow Switch: Vane type switch for mounting horizontal or vertical, with two contacts; rated 10 amp at 125 volt AC and 2.5 amp at 24 volt DC. E. Fire Department Connections: 1. Type: Free standing type with ductile iron pedestal red enamel finish. 2. Outlets: Two way with thread size to suit fire department hardware; threaded dust cap and chain of matching material and finish. 3. Label: "Sprinkler - Fire Department Connection". 2.4 AIR COMPRESSOR A. Compressor: Single unit, electric motor driven, motor, motor starter, safety valves, check valves, air maintenance device incorporating electric pressure switch and unloader valve. B. Electrical Characteristics: 1. 3/4 hp volts, single phase, 60 Hz. PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.1 INSTALLATION A. Install in accordance with NFPA 13. B. Install equipment in accordance with manufacturers instructions. SPRINKLER SYSTEMS
6 C. Install buried shut-off valves in valve box. Provide post indicator. FLEX FILMS, U.S.A, LLC D. Provide approved double check valve assembly at sprinkler system water source connection. E. Locate fire department connection with sufficient clearance from walls, obstructions, or adjacent siamese connectors to allow full swing of fire department wrench handle. F. Locate outside alarm gong on building wall as indicated. G. Place pipe runs to minimize obstruction to other work. H. Place piping in concealed spaces above finished ceilings. I. Center sprinklers in two directions in ceiling tile and provide piping offsets as required. J. Apply masking tape or paper cover to ensure concealed sprinklers, cover plates, and sprinkler escutcheons do not receive field paint finish. Remove after painting. Replace painted sprinklers. K. Install air compressor on vibration isolators. L. Flush entire piping system of foreign matter. M. Install guards on sprinklers where exposed. N. Hydrostatically test entire system. 3.2 INTERFACE WITH OTHER PRODUCTS A. Ensure required devices are installed and connected as required to fire alarm system. END OF SECTION SPRINKLER SYSTEMS
