Local Movement under the System of Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings in Japan Treechart Laokaewnoo Faculty of Architecture, Chulalongkorn University 4 5 Abstract The system of preservation district for groups of traditional buildings: Denken Seido is one of significant paradigm shift of preservation movement in Japan. The main purpose of this shift is to encourage local residences to manage cultural properties, especially traditional buildings, in their own communities. This study emphasizes backgrounds of urban conservation movements in four items: cultural values, impulsions of movements, change agents and specific procedures. The main findings from this study represent how each stakeholder drives the preservation movement and what are results of these movements. These findings demonstrate the informal procedure in preservation management that is advantageous for others especially towns in the eastern world. 203

Abstract The Ornamental Plants Project for Bang Kruai District, Nonthaburi Province was established in the year 2004. The project has been successful in selling and plant propagation but not in agro tourism destination development. This study aims to study problems and obstacles for the project development, customers needs as well as to propose developmental guidelines based on view of the researcher traders, customers, and government sectors. Based on researcher s evaluation criteria for land development potential, Bang Kruai District has an intermediate potential (63% rating) for agro tourism. Results of the field survey and interview demonstrate the problems and obstracles for project development including the following: 1) a weak relationship network between community and neighbouring traders 2) lack of public relations and, 3) inadequate tourist facilies. Therefore, the recommended development guidelines include supporting community management, the expansion of the traders network, continuing the public relations process, and improving the quality of tourist facilities. : Guidelines to Renovate Traditional Markets: A Case Study of Chatchai Market, Amphoe Hua-Hin, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province Chayin Srisurach Faculty of Architecture and Planning, Thammasat University 3 : 207

Abstract This goal of this study is to propose a guideline for renovation and preservation of traditional market areas through a case study of Chatchai market in Hua Hin. Chatchai market has been abandoned by the government and the community despite its historical, social, and architectural values. The renovation of physical features will provide an optimal solution for both community and tourists along with social and historical preservation. The research consists of input from the community, users, and specialists of the Fine Art Department. Literature reviews and community viewpoint survey on values were analyzed to propose an effective solution by emphasizing the community participation with the least impact on their lifestyle. Management methods will be applied for a sustainable and sufficient traditional market. The outcome will contribute to the government sector or other traditional market communities.
