JOHN F. KENNEDY CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS EXPANSION John F. Kennedy Center Paratus Group Architect: Steven Holl Architects Site/Civil Geotechnical Natural Resources & Permitting Environmental Terrestrial Scanning/BIM Traditional Surveying With over three million visitors annually the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts serves as an icon of the District of Columbia and the Potomac River presenting the greatest performances of music dance and theater. In need of additional space for its existing and growing programs the Kennedy Center is expanding its facilities by 78 000 SF including three pavilions and a pedestrian bridge. Langan is providing provide site/civil environmental and geotechnical engineering; natural resource permitting; survey (including 3D laser scanning); and hazardous materials consulting for the expansion.
UNION STATION - CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS Burns Engineering Inc. Amtrak Site/Civil Geotechnical Traditional Surveying Terrestrial Scanning/BIM Langan was retained to perform multiple services at this busy landmark Amtrak facility for future proposed improvements including a mixed-use overbuild project below-grade parking and track service improvements. Langan performed a boundary topographic and utility survey to facilitate the design and permitting of site demolition work; and construction of a substation parking lot improvements and several new catenary structures. Langan also performed a 3D laser scan of the Amtrak rail lines and surrounding parcel features from an adjacent lot as well as geotechnical and civil engineering services to support the permitting and construction of the improvements.
HECHT WAREHOUSE REDEVELOPMENT Douglas Development Corporation Architect: Shalom Baranes Associates Antunovich Associates Geotechnical Environmental Langan provided geotechnical engineering services to assist in the redevelopment of the historic Hecht warehouse into a mixed-use development. Known as one of the most significant art deco commercial buildings in the region warehouse served as the company?s central warehouse from its construction in 1937 and expansion in 1948. Langan performed a series of geotechnical borings throughout the property to assess the subsurface conditions. The study also included a review of historic foundation drawings for the warehouse structure that was built in 1937 and its 1985 addition.
STATION HOUSE Fisher Brothers Architect: Hickok Cole Architects Handel Architects Partner: Plaza Construction Geotechnical Environmental Langan provided geotechnical and environmental engineering services for the Capitol Place mixed-use development project. The project included the construction of 375 residential units 20 000 SF of retail space two levels of below-grade parking and an interior courtyard with garden and eco-pond areas. Located near Union Station the project demonstrates transit-oriented green development and pedestrian improvements. AWARD LEED Gold Certification
UNIVERSITY OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA - NEW STUDENT CENTER Geotechnical Environmental Traditional Surveying Terrestrial Scanning/BIM The new three-story student center with a partial basement level encompasses approximately 30 700 SF. Langan completed a geotechnical investigation which detailed the existing foundations of adjacent buildings to assist the structural engineer and architect.
HOWARD UNIVERSITY INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH BUILDING Howard University Architect: HDR Inc. Partner: Brailsford & Dunlavey Environmental Geotechnical Langan provided environmental and geotechnical engineering services to Howard University for the development of the Interdisciplinary Research Building. Services provided included Phase I II and III Environmental Site Assessments. Langan also completed a geotechnical investigation to provide recommendations for site preparation foundation design peer review of contractor specifications and drawings and other geotechnical aspects of the proposed development. TRINITY UNIVERSITY - PAYDEN ACADEMIC CENTER Trinity University Architect: EYP Partner: Clark Construction Group JLL Geotechnical Langan provided geotechnical services for the new Trinity Academic Center at Trinity University. The four-story 80 000-SF building will house new science and health profession laboratories classrooms offices information technology support and learning spaces. Langan performed a geotechnical investigation consisting of seven borings and installed one temporary groundwater monitoring well. Due to the presence and variable density of the existing fill Langan recommended the existing fill soils be removed and recompacted or densified in place before raising grades within the building pad.
SOULCYCLE Henderson Engineers Inc. Site/Civil Traditional Surveying Langan provided site/civil engineering and surveying services for the improvement of existing tenant spaces which were then converted into SoulCycle indoor cycling locations in Georgetown and on 14thStreet. The facilities required upgraded water and sewer services and new electric and gas services. Due to limited street frontage a high level of coordination was necessary in order to accommodate the new utility services for DC Water as well as new PEPCO and Washington Gas service connections.
US COURT OF APPEALS OF THE ARMED FORCES IBI Group - Gruzen Samton Architects Terrestrial Scanning/BIM Traditional Surveying A full exterior laser scan of the building facades was performed as well as a control survey for the accurate merge of the laser scan point clouds. Detailed elevations and cross sections of the building were produced from the scan data for the planning and implementation of a new lighting scheme for the building.
WMATA SHEPHERD PARKWAY BUS GARAGE Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) Partner: Systra Consulting Hensel Phelps Construction Geotechnical Environmental This design-build bus garage facility is located in southeast at the site of the former DC Village. The facility includes a maintenance and administration building fueling station bus wash and a structured parking garage. The project also includes surface parking areas and utility infrastructure. The completed project will be an environmentally-friendly LEED Silver certified facility. Langan provided the necessary geotechnical and environmental engineering services to prepare plans bid specifications and written reports for approval by WMATA and the District of Columbia.
TURNBERRY TOWER Arlington VA Turnberry Associates Architect: BBGM Partner: SK&A Structural Engineers Geotechnical Environmental Turnberry Tower is a 25-story 247-unit high-end luxury condominium. The building soars nearly 400 feet above the Potomac River and is the tallest condo building in the metropolitan region. The 920 000 SF $250 million project also includes a six-level below grade parking garage. Langan provided geotechnical and environmental services for the project.
19NINETEEN CLARENDON BOULEVARD Arlington VA Harkins Builders Environmental Langan was retained to oversee and supervise the removal of two unknown underground fuel oil storage tanks during site development. A characterization investigation followed and a total of 1 373.59-tons of petroleum-contaminated soils were excavated from the site and transported off-site for disposal. Langan is also conducting the monthly testing and monitoring of the on-site dewatering system that was installed after the site investigation.
ANDREWS AIR FORCE BASE DEMOLITION - BUILDINGS 1535 AND 1513 Andrews Air Force Base MD ECC Demolition Site/Civil Environmental Traditional Surveying Langan provided design-build engineering services for demolition of the old headquarters building at Andrews Air Force Base. The project included hazardous material abatement and demolition of the 350 000-square-foot headquarters building and 7 000-square-foot boiler building. After the demolition phase is completed the project sites will be converted into landscaped parks.
