The preparation of the homeowner and the way they undertake the project is vital to the smooth running of the process and in managing expectations. Preparing the wallet Before a renovation, you will need to determine your budget so look into your available spend. A personal loan may be required or an access bond may need to be activated to free up the money. Preparing the designer If you are renovating, you may wish to create a sketch of the room itself to assist with the design and layout. Here is a quick guide to measuring the space: Mark all dimensions in millimetres. Mark doors and windows accordingly with the direction the door swings and the windows open to help layout detailing. Measure from floor to ceiling in all four corners as older homes can be marginally disproportional. Windows require measurement from floor up as well as volume. Bed down lead times and the order of business in terms of electricians, plumbers etc. They may require direct payment so discuss the option of remunerating each contractor vs a kitchen company that employs their own specialists. Keep a pin board or scrapbook of your favourite styles and colour choices. Check out showrooms so that you understand the materials and advantages of the various products before you receive an actual 3D design. Get a feel for prices so that when you are selecting components, you are prepared for the costing, reducing the incidence of shock at the quoted price. Bear in mind that working with an approved kitchen company will offer some guarantees that you can t get from individual outfits. If the company is affiliated to the Kitchen Specialist Association (KSA) then it has the backing of the industry umbrella.
