OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION NEWS YOU CAN USE For Montgomery County Master Gardener Volunteers June 2018 We are Ohio State University Extension trained volunteers empowered to educate others with timely research-based gardening information. June is upon us. The carpenter bees and cottonwood seeds have been as thick as honey on a cold day this year. As we begin to slip into summer, we have much to look forward. Our first MGV meeting and certification celebration will be held on June 19 th at 10 a.m. at our new location. The first Montgomery County Fair will start July 9 th 15 th at the new Fairgrounds. Along with all this new activity, we can expect visits from old friends. With our growing degree days at 729, crabgrass has emerged, and the scales are about to enter their crawler stage. For more information on emerging insects, go to the growing degree day website: www.oardc.ohio-state/ggd. Remember, it is far better to be pro-active than reactive when it comes to insects and diseases. Please remember to R.S.V.P. for the June meeting and certification celebration. I look forward to seeing everyone! ~ Kim CONTINUING EDUCATION Wednesday, June 13 10 a.m. to Noon 1.5 CEUs and 1:30 to 3 p.m. 1.5 CEUs The Well Designed Garden (Session 1) and The Art of Pruning Perennials (Session 2) Traci DiSabato-Aust Walnut Grove Country Club, Dayton, OH 45432 Sunday, June 10 2 p.m. Dedication of Memorial to Susan Pearson, OSU Extension Master Gardener and Grotto Volunteer VA Grotto and Gardens Tuesday, June 19 10 a.m. Greater Montgomery County Master Gardener Association Quarterly General Membership Meeting OSU Extension office, 580 Calumet Lane, Dayton, OH 45417 Tuesday, June 26 6 p.m. GMCMGA Annual Mixer Hills & Dales MetroPark, Paw Paw Shelter

The entire Grotto and Garden area was abuzz with activity! A group of Home Depot volunteers focused on the paver paths, while others worked planting annuals in the various gardens with instruction from the Master Gardeners. A delicious lunch was provided for the hungry volunteers! Regular work days at the Grotto are Tues. and Wed. mornings 9 Noon. Other scheduled work days will be announced. Planting Days in Washington Township Photos courtesy of Stephanie Bange and Gail Carone Montgomery County MGVs assembled in Washington Township on May 16 th to begin planting the various garden beds in and around the township government buildings, fire stations, roadways, etc. Digging, dividing and transplanting perennials was the theme this year along with planting the annuals that will turn the gardens into a beautiful palette of vibrate color! Planting continued through the rest of the week and into the following week. Thank you to all the volunteers who helped with this project. Special thanks to Yvonne Dunphe and Jan Burke-Brown. And thanks to Rose Monnin for coordinating our lunch on our first day of planting. News You Can Use June 2018 3 Montgomery Co. Master Gardener Volunteer Program

The nominating committee is working to fill our slate of nominees for executive board officers, and we need your help! We have worked very hard to establish our 501(c)(3) designation and must have a board of officers to be compliant with the rules of law. In November, 2017, the four executive officers agreed to serve an additional year. That year is up on December 31, 2018. Of the positions to be filled, which are President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer, only the Treasurer position has a firm commitment. Please consider nominating one of our outstanding Master Gardeners to carry on the vision of our current executive officers. The nominating committee will contact those persons placed in nomination. Or, if you feel like this is something that you would like to pursue, please contact one of the following: Donna Zobrist at donna45424@yahoo.com or phone (937) 233-3481 Linda Crane at lcrane@woh.rr.com or phone (937) 299-7685 Joan Stoppelman at tomstop@woh.rr.com or phone (937) 626-3094 Related to the above request, I feel that the GMCMGA is owed an explanation of why I have decided not to follow Janet as the President as was originally planned. Five years ago, when Janet asked me to be her Vice President, the task of following her seemed very doable. Even three years ago, that was still my plan. However, the last couple of years I have seen changes in my life that will not allow this to happen. I have seen my husband s health begin to wane, nothing serious, but still noticeable. My own stamina is not what it was a few years ago. And, as our medical expenditures increase, I recognize that I might be substitute teaching until I am 90! I have always been a big believer in Let your conscience be your guide. Because I have been married to Tom for 51 years and to Master Gardeners for only 11 years, he must be my priority. I know that I would not have a clear conscience if I added this to my already busy schedule. I love this organization and want it to thrive. I can assure anyone willing to serve as officers that you will have the complete support of the current officers. Ideally, we would love to have a person step forward as President who will then help us find a compatible Vice President. Please think about this! Sincerely, Donna Zobrist News You Can Use June 2018 4 Montgomery Co. Master Gardener Volunteer Program
Communication Committee We re hoping to recruit from our membership, a group of individuals to learn the ins and outs of creating our OSU Extension branded materials to support our Montgomery County Master Gardeners. Do you have a background in design, advertising or media-publication? Would you like to learn how to create pamphlets, brochures, and flyers from the branded templates provided on the OSU Extension website? If so, please contact me, Gail Carone, getcarone@hotmail.com. I m happy to share the process with those interested. You must have a working knowledge of Microsoft Word, and it helps to understand the other Microsoft applications of PowerPoint and Publisher. We will have small group sessions as we go over the steps and learn the tricks to create the advertising to promote our OSU Extension Montgomery County Master Gardeners and their mission to engage with the public.
