The style is informal Elizabethan with an outburst of half-timbering towards the garden.

"Shropshire's First Self-Consciously Artistic Victorian Country House" The house was built in 1889-92 by Aston Webb for Sir Offley Wakeman, Bart, antiquary and local politician, and is Webb s only full scale country house. The style is informal Elizabethan and only the very best materials were used; choice English oak for the half-timbering, green Westmorland slate for the roofs and red sandstone from the Triassic beds at Boreatton. For thirty years, until 1971, Yeaton Peverey Hall was used as a school with around 100 pupils. There is a central entrance arch with wrought-iron gates by Starkie Gardner and twin standing figures of town criers (wakemen) Some of the richly decorated interior rooms have cedar panelling whilst most have moulded and enriched plastered ceilings and wall decoration, inglenooks and chimney-pieces. Some of the original wallpaper and light fittings remain, and there is a private family chapel. The house stands in landscaped grounds, including a terrace and forecourt walls with pavilions. The body of the house is largely two-storeyed and at first sight quite irregular, held together by the continuous length-ways roof ridges, and by a mid-height frieze bearing the text from Psalm 127, Unless the Lord build the house.

There is an arched doorway with voussoirs and colonnetted jambs, a reduced version of Webb s portal at the Victoria and Albert Museum, designed in 1891. There is a substantial battlemented conservatory with segmental windows at the northwest corner of the house. The interior is a carefully managed sequence of spaces. The entrance vestibule opens into a large dark wainscoted stair hall, the stair rising to the west and the main space opened up to a balustraded upper balcony top-lit by means of a coved, leaded lay-light.

The Billiard Room has an inglenook under a semi-circular arch, and direct access into the conservatory. The inner hall, with decorated plaster ceiling and an armorial chimneypiece dated 1892 with inglenook seats The principal reception room, the Ballroom, also opens, by a low panelled vestibule to the conservatory. The south wall is a huge mullion-and-transom window grid, the plaster ceiling decorated with pendants. There is a mighty inglenook fireplace with timber overmantel on columns.

The ORATORY beyond the ceiling takes the form of an enriched segmental vault. Stained glass here by Kempe. The sequence of south-facing rooms ends with Lady Wakeman s BOUDOIR, decorated with especially pretty plasterwork, of flowers and pomegranates among strapwork, and Sir Offley s STUDY, where an inscription tablet above the door records the design and construction of the house in 1889-92.

On the principal staircase there is heraldic glass and at the stairhead an arcade creating one of the most imaginative spaces in the house.
