Working Plans: Documents, including drawings, calculations, and material specifications prepared according to FM, NFPA 13 NFPA 14 for obtaining approval from authorities having jurisdiction. 1.04 SYSTEM DESCRIPTIONS A. Automatic Wet-Pipe Sprinkler System: Automatic sprinklers are attached to piping containing water and that is connected to water supply. Water discharges immediately from sprinklers when they are opened. Sprinklers open when heat melts fusible link or destroys frangible device. B. The existing building currently does not have a fire suppression system. A new wet pipe fire suppression system will be added that will cover the entire building, including new additions. 1.05 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS A. Standard Piping System Component Working Pressure: Listed for at least 175 psig. B. Fire-suppression sprinkler system design shall be approved by authorities having jurisdiction. 1. Margin of Safety for Available Water Flow and Pressure: 10 percent, including losses through water-service piping, valves, and backflow preventers. 2. Sprinkler Occupancy Hazard Classifications: a. Seismic Performance: Fire-suppression piping shall be capable of withstanding the effects of earthquake motions determined according to NFPA 13 and the Uniform Building Code as adopted and amended by the state of Indiana, latest enforced edition. 1.06 SUBMITTALS A. Product Data: For the following: 1. Piping materials, including sprinkler specialty fittings. 2. Pipe hangers and supports. 3. Valves, including listed fire-protection valves, unlisted general-duty valves, and specialty valves and trim. 4. Sprinklers, escutcheons, and guards. Include sprinkler flow characteristics, mounting, finish, and other pertinent data. 5. Fire department connections, including type; number, size, and arrangement of inlets; caps and chains; size and direction of outlet; escutcheon and marking; and finish. 6. Approved Sprinkler Piping Drawings: Working plans, prepared according to NFPA 13, that have been approved by authorities having jurisdiction, including hydraulic calculations. D. Field Test Reports and Certificates: Indicate and interpret test results for compliance with performance requirements and as described in NFPA 13. Include "Contractor's Material and Test Certificate for Aboveground Piping." E. Operation and Maintenance Data: For sprinkler specialties to include in emergency, operation, and maintenance manuals. 1.07 QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Installer Qualifications: An experienced installer who has designed and installed fire-suppression piping similar to that indicated for this Project and obtained design approval and inspection approval from authorities having jurisdiction. B. Engineering Responsibility: Preparation of working plans, calculations, and field test reports by a qualified, NICET Level 3 engineer technician. Base calculations on results of fire-hydrant flow test. C. Manufacturer Qualifications: Firms whose equipment, specialties, and accessories are listed by product name and manufacturer in UL's "Fire Protection Equipment Directory" and FM's "Fire Protection Approval Guide" and that comply with other requirements indicated. D. Sprinkler Components: Listing/approval stamp, label, or other marking by a testing agency acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction. E. Electrical Components, Devices, and Accessories: Listed and labeled as defined in NFPA 70, Article 100, by testing agency acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction. F. NFPA Standards: Equipment, specialties, accessories, installation, and testing complying with the following: 1. NFPA 13, "Installation of Sprinkler Systems." 1.08 COORDINATION A. Coordinate layout and installation of sprinklers with other construction that penetrates ceilings, including light fixtures, HVAC equipment, and partition assemblies. 1.09 EXTRA MATERIALS A. Furnish extra materials described below that match products installed and that are packaged with protective covering for storage and identified with labels describing contents. 1. Sprinkler Cabinets: Finished, wall-mounting, steel cabinet with hinged cover, with space for minimum of six spare sprinklers plus sprinkler wrench. Include number of sprinklers required by NFPA 13 and sprinkler wrench. Include separate cabinet with sprinklers and wrench for each type of sprinkler on Project. General-Duty Valves: For applications where UL-listed and FM-approved valves are not required by NFPA 13 and NFPA 14. a. Shutoff Duty: Use gate, ball, or butterfly valves. b. Throttling Duty: Use globe, ball, or butterfly valves. 3.05 JOINT CONSTRUCTION A. Refer to Division 2 Section Water Distribution for backflow preventers installed in pit. B. Steel-Piping, Grooved Joints: Use Schedule 40 steel pipe with cut or roll-grooved ends and Schedule 30 or thinner steel pipe with roll-grooved ends; steel, grooved-end fittings; and steel, keyed couplings. Assemble joints with couplings, gaskets, lubricant, and bolts according to coupling manufacturer s written instructions. Use gaskets listed for dry-pipe service for dry piping. C. Threaded Joints: Comply with NFPA 13 for pipe thickness and threads. Do not thread pipe smaller than NPS 6 (DN 150) with wall thickness less than Schedule 40. D. Dissimilar-Piping-Material Joints: Construct joints using adapters or couplings compatible with both piping materials. Use dielectric fittings if both piping materials are metal. Refer to Division 15 Section "Basic Mechanical Materials and Methods" for dielectric fittings. 3.06 SERVICE-ENTRANCE PIPING A. Edit this Article as required or delete and retain "Water-Supply Connection" Article below if connection to building water distribution piping is required. B. Connect fire-suppression piping to water-service piping of size and in location indicated for service entrance to building. Refer to Division 2 Section Water Distribution for exterior piping. C. Install shutoff valve, check valve, pressure gage, and drain at connection to water service. 3.07 PIPING INSTALLATION A. Refer to Division 15 Section "Basic Mechanical Materials and Methods" for basic piping installation. B. Locations and Arrangements: Drawing plans, schematics, and diagrams indicate general location and arrangement of piping. Install piping as indicated, as far as practical. 1. Deviations from approved working plans for piping require written approval from authorities having jurisdiction. File written approval with Architect before deviating from approved working plans. C. D. Install unions adjacent to each valve in pipes NPS 2 and smaller. Unions are not required on flanged devices or in piping installations using grooved joints. E. Install "Inspector's Test Connections" in sprinkler piping, complete with shutoff valve, sized and located according to NFPA 13. G. Install sprinkler piping with drains for complete system drainage. H. Install sprinkler zone control valves, test assemblies, and drain risers. I. Install drain valves on zone piping. J. Install ball drip valves to drain piping between fire department connections and check valves. Drain to floor drain or outside building. K. Install alarm devices in piping systems. L. Hangers and Supports: Comply with NFPA 13 for hanger materials. Install according to NFPA 13 for sprinkler piping. M. PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.01 INSTALLATION A. Refer to Division 15 Section Basic Mechanical Materials and Methods for piping joining materials, joint construction, and basic installation requirements. B. Install balancing valves in locations where they can easily be adjusted. C. Install water hammer arresters in water piping according to PDI-WH 201. D. Install thermostatic mixing valves with check stops or shut-off valves on inlets and shutoff valve and thermometer on outlet. E. Install access panels at water hammer arrestors. 3.02 CONNECTIONS A. Piping installation requirements are specified in other Division 15 Sections. Drawings indicate general arrangement of piping and specialties. 3.03 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL A. Remove and replace malfunctioning domestic water piping specialties and retest as specified above. 3.04 LABELING AND IDENTIFYING A. Equipment Nameplates and Signs: Install engraved plastic-laminate equipment nameplate or sign on or near each of the following: 1. Calibrated balancing valves. B.
