Seminar 7: Symposium of Selected Emerging Fire Protection Technologies Taught by subject matter experts, this symposium will provide technical insight and information on selected recent and emerging fire protection design techniques, systems, and technologies. There will be 6 separate, hour-long sessions covering the following topics: Preaction Systems by David Asplund, The Reliable Automatic Sprinkler Co., Inc. FAAST by Tom Boyle, Fike Facilities Protection Group Fire Alarm System Installation and Test Methods, by Marc Trembley, M.C. Dean International Fire-Link II, Leading Technology for the Fire Protection Industry by Rien Van Den Enden, Signalink Technologies Enhanced Corrosion Protection for Fire Sprinkler Systems, by Josh Tihen, Potter Electric Signal Company The Value of New Technology in Special Hazards Fire Protection, by Joe Konenkamp, Ed Cone, and Tiffany Konenkamp, Century Fire Protection Speaker bios and further session details are on the following pages. (Note: Session order may differ from above listing.)

David L. Asplund, P.E. Director of Technical Services The Reliable Automatic Sprinkler Co., Inc. David L. Asplund, P.E. is a 35 year veteran of the fire sprinkler industry. Mr. Asplund has been employed by The Reliable Automatic Sprinkler Co., Inc. for the past 16 years. He has held several positions at Reliable including regional salesman, technical services manager and regional sales manager. His current title is Director of Technical Services. Prior to his career at Reliable, he spent 19 years as a fire sprinkler contractor for various companies in the western part of the United States. Mr. Asplund has a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Colorado and is a licensed fire protection engineer in the states of Colorado & Washington. He has been N.I.C.E.T. certified as a Level III Fire Sprinkler Layout Technician and is a full member of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers. He also sits on the NFPA 25 committee for Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems and the NSFA s Engineering & Standards Committee. Session Description Preaction Sprinklers This session will highlight pre-action systems, as well as the differences between the various types of single and double interlock systems. A discussion on single and cross zone releasing control panels will also be reviewed. Corrosion abatement for preaction system piping will be covered, as well.

Tom Boyle Regional Manager Southeast USA Fike Facilities Protection Group Tom Boyle has 30 years of experience in various capacities of sales, engineering, and management in the fire alarm/life safety/commercial suppression industry. He currently serves as the Regional Manager for Fike Facilities Protection Group, located in Largo, FL, responsible for Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Session Description FAAST Fike's FAAST is very early warning fire detection featuring the latest in Fire Alarm Aspiration Sensing Technology. Compatible and complementary to each of Fike's fire alarm and fire suppression systems, this technology uses an advanced, intelligent smoke detector that actively draws air into its sensor through a pipe network. FAAST combines dual source blue LED and infra-red laser optical smoke detection with advanced algorithms to detect a wide range of fires while maintaining enhanced immunity to nuisance particulates, which enables FAAST to deliver highly accurate and discreet early warning fire detection for a wide variety of environments/applications. FAAST is an intelligent fire alarm device and acts, reports and programs similar to any SLC device (including detectors and pull stations). A fully integrated part of Fike's family of fire alarm and fire suppression releasing panels, FAAST is easily programmable, reducing overall cost and commissioning of the entire fire alarm system.

Marc Trembley Life Safety Business Development Manager M.C. Dean International Marc Trembley is the Life Safety Business Development Manager for M.C. Dean Inc. a national design-build and systems integration firm specializing in complex and mission critical facilities. His current responsibilities include proposal development, marketing, and sales process management. His experience includes over 25 years of practical life safety industry service including roles within the fields of management, sales, service, and operations. Having worked with major system manufacturers (Honeywell/Notifier, Simplex and Tyco), as well as fire protection system integrators, Mr. Trembley is a wealth of industry knowledge and applications. His current certifications include NICET, LEED, and OSHA. He is also a long standing member of NFPA. Session Description Fire Alarm System Installation and Test Methods M.C. Dean will introduce and discuss various methods, reasons, and examples of their innovative prefabrication and pre-installation testing methods of fire alarm systems. This session will review the following: Describe the Pre-fabrication assembly of materials and equipment; Describe the Pre-installation, Installation, and Check-Out (PITCO) process of equipment testing prior to installation on-site; Discuss an actual project using pre-installation and testing activities; Discuss troubleshooting and testing software prior to installation on-site; and Highlight a case study of how PITCO provided a test environment for adapting fire alarm system software to meet project specifications.

Rien Van Den Enden Product Manager Signalink Technologies Rien Van Den Enden has been a part of the life safety industry for over 12 years. Prior to that, he spent 10 years as an energy procurement and transportation consultant. While employed with SimplexGrinnell, his primary focus was the sales and service of electronics and new life safety technologies. During this time, he was introduced to Signalink Technologies, the creator and manufacturer of Fire-Link. As early as 2006, Mr. Van Den Enden sold some of the very first Fire-Link systems. In May of 2009, he joined Signalink Technologies as a Regional Manager. His extensive knowledge in Fire-Link field operations, coupled with the best line carrier technology engineers, created Fire-Link II, which has been on the market now for over 3 years. Mr. Van Den Enden now serves as Product Manager for Fire-Link II. Session Description Fire-Link II, Leading Technology for the Fire Protection Industry This session will review Fire-Link II, manufactured by Signalink Technologies Inc. Fire-Link II is a complete audibility upgrade solution, utilizing a revolutionary new power-line communications technology that signals through the building s existing AC Power electrical wiring. This advanced Fire Alarm notification signaling device has a fully addressable and supervised 87 dba in-suite device mini-horn that can be installed anywhere there is an AC outlet. The Fire-Link II system attaches to any existing Fire Alarm Control Panel and is a CSFM and UL / ULC listed Fire Signaling System, created to meet NFPA72 standards for the purpose of overcoming audibility issues prevalent in older multiunit residential buildings.
