AERS Automatic Energy Reduction System HID lamp control systems for maximum energy savings Holophane has been a leader in energy efficient luminaires and systems for over 100 years. In the late 1960 s, Holophane developed a Hi-Lo system for mercury vapor fixtures. We have now developed a new Hi-Lo system designed to take even greater advantage of today s energy efficient MH and HPS lamps and high efficiency borosilicate glass reflectors and refractors. HL-1161 4/03

AERS Operates either metal halide or high pressure sodium lamps HPS: Full input, 100%, and either 35% or 50% input wattage MH: Full input, 100%, and 50% input wattage C/UL/US listed for damp location Normal level System overview With a lighting system operating at normal output, all production activities can be conducted safely and efficiently. When an activity is reduced or terminated, selected areas may be automatically switched to a preselected lower output to save energy. Lighting distribution remains the same but the system is operating in the energy conservation mode by reducing input watts to the fixture. When AERS senses activity in an area, the lighting system smoothly returns to normal output. This system is a combination of luminaires and sensors connected to a control module. Each control module circuit operates a sensor/luminaire combination. Occupancy sensors/contact closures An occupancy sensor or other contact closure (photosensor, pressure pad, etc.) detects when someone is present in a zone and HOLOPHANE 2

When the sensors no longer sense motion in a zone, the sensor signal stops and the luminaires switch back to low mode after a preset time delay. A control module can operate up to six zones with a maximum of twenty luminaires (600 ma load) per zone (DC-low voltage). AERS luminaire The standard Holophane luminaire is designed with a modified ballast and relay to operate with AERS. The modified ballast is designed to operate the lamp at two input wattages: HPS, normal input like a standard luminaire, and a reduced input, either 35% or 50% of full input. Metal halide, normal input and a reduced input of 50%. The relay is wired to an occupancy sensor (or some type of contact closure) through a control module allowing the luminaire to switch between the two input wattages. The relay signals the ballast which input wattage to supply the lamp at any time. AERS 3 HOLOPHANE

AERS The control module has three primary functions: 1 When the luminaires are first turned on, the control module overrides the sensors and leaves the luminaires on normal mode for 15 minutes,* until the lamps are operating at steady state. After the 15 minute warm-up, the control module allows the sensors to control the luminaire switching. 2 The control module links the luminaires and the sensors in a zone. In a flex wiring system, the control module links the hard-wiring system to the flex system. 3 The control module allows override switching of individual zones or the entire system through low power, low voltage contact closures, such as a manual switch (DC-low voltage). *Lamp manufacturers suggest a stabilization time at normal lamp output. Each control module is designed to handle up to six zones. This system is ideal for adding AERS control to installations with existing power distribution. High voltage control AERS is also available using high voltage control wiring. Line power and control wiring can run together through the same conduit. (Not available in Canada) High voltage/holoflex control Holophane has incorporated AERS into its Holoflex flexible wiring system. Line power and control wiring are fed through a single cable. The AERS control module is designed to handle up to three zones. This system is ideal for installing AERS into new installations. As indicated by the table, HPS input wattage increases over life. Therefore, the average input over life is higher than the initial or nominal input, resulting in more accurate savings. Ideally, a group relamping program would maximize energy savings. In normal operation, a 400 watt HPS lamp is consuming 445 watts on average to provide normal lamp output. At the 35% level it will consume an average of 199 watts. This can be a significant savings where large facilities with frequent low occupancy or activity levels are concerned. For metal halide, the nominal input wattage may be used to calculate energy savings over life. Transition time The tables show actual illumination response time to switched operation. Example: For 400W HPS transition response to 35% low. Energy reduction is instantaneous. Lamp output drops initially to 55% and continues downward as lamp cools to approximately 22% output. Reversing the procedure, input wattage returns to normal and illumination immediately increases to 44% output and continues upward as lamp warms. Normal operation is resumed in approximately 3 minutes (250 watt operation is similar). Metal halide s response is similar, however, the return to normal output is almost instantaneous. The lamps are virtually at full output in 40 seconds. AERS 5 HOLOPHANE
