Page 4 / 9 INSTRUCTION MANUAL CBN 8 / 18 / 28-30 1. Introduction Information about this manual: This manual describes installation, use, and maintenance of the HETO COOLING BATHS type CBN 8-30, 18-30, and 28-30, with an operating range from 30 C to +100 C* continuously and up to +120 C* for shorter periods, using appropriate liquids to maintain a good temperature stability. *) Above ambient temperature only with use of heating thermostat. The only functional element is the cooling system. The Heto CBN -30 series cooling baths are high performance units. They combine the demand for high cooling power with low ultimate temperatures. The cooling baths have been specially designed to work together with the HETO HMT series thermostats, but can also be used together with previous Heto thermostats and other manufacturers products. Unit seen from the front and the rear: ID- label Drain Hose Mains Switch Fuses Opening for Air Circulation Mains Connection 2. Safety precautions The cooling bath is designed according to EN61010. This assumes that two separate faults do not occur simultaneously. The cooling bath therefore offers protection against a single fault. WARNING FIRE HAZARD A potential fire hazard exists when operating the bath with flammable fluids at temperatures above their respective flash point. Fluids with flash points below ambient temperature are particularly hazardous. WARNING When installing a thermostat with the cooling bath, ensure that the excess temperature protection is set no higher than 5 C below the flash point/boiling temperature of the liquid. See separate instruction manual for the thermostat.
CBN 8 / 18 / 28-30 INSTRUCTION MANUAL Page 5 of 9 3. Installation WARNING When working with extreme temperatures always use suitable personal protection equipment. The cooling bath must never work in ambient temperatures lower than +5 C and higher than +32 C. The cabinet has openings for air circulation. The openings must never be covered and there must always be sufficient room for air circulation around the cabinet, 100 mm is recommended. Since the unit is capable of achieving temperatures down to 30 C, precautions should be taken to avoid freezing of the liquid, which could damage the circulation pump on the thermostat. Use liquids recommended by HETO-HOLTEN A/S to secure maximum performance and avoid unnecessary problems. Check that the mains supply is in accordance with the specifications stated on the type label on the back of the unit and connect the power cord to a power socket with protective ground. Fill the bath with a suitable fluid 30 to 40-mm below the rim of the bath. Make sure that the drain is closed. If a thermostat is installed with the cooling bath, ensure that a possible stopcock on this unit is closed. See separate manual for the thermostat. For circulation through external circulation systems connect it to the outlet and inlet on the thermostat by means of insulated rubber hoses. The cooling bath is designed to fit under standard laboratory tables with a HETO THERMOSTAT installed. Do not position the bath closer than 10 cm from walls or other obstructions, as the bath require good air circulation around the unit to assure maximum performance. 4. EN 61010 demands that the operating temperature must be at least 25 C below the flash point of the liquid being used. The excess temperature protection should be set no higher than 5 C below the flash point. HETO HOLTEN recommends that liquids with a flash point below ambient temperature should be stored and handled refrigerated.
Page 6 / 9 INSTRUCTION MANUAL CBN 8 / 18 / 28-30 NOTE The volume of some liquids varies due to thermal expansion when the bath temperature rises. Make sure that overflow is avoided. 5. Configurations 1. Without thermostat. In this case the bath will keep cooling the liquid until a state of equilibrium between the cooling power and the load from flasks and the surroundings around 30 C is reached. The approximate cool down time in minutes may be calculated from: Cool down time = T V k W 70, where T V k W = Temp start - Temp end in degrees Centigrade = volume of liquid in litres = 1 for water, 0.5 for alcohol = average cooling capacity between Temp start and Temp end. 2. With HETO HMT thermostat. In all cases the thermostat regulates the temperature in the bath by applying heat to the bath. See also the instruction manual for the thermostat. 3. With older HETO THERMOSTAT. A number of accessories is available, to allow the use of older HETO THERMOSTATS with the CBN cooling baths. See Appendix 1. See also the instruction manual for the thermostat. 4. Bath with thermostat from other manufacturers. Select the appropriate fixation clamp or bridge to place the thermostat securely on the bath. For operation, see the instruction manual for the thermostat. 6. Accessories A number of accessories is available, i.e. high inclined cover lids, flat cover lids, insulated cover lids, ring systems, and pp-balls. See appendix 1 for an overview of available accessories. 7. Operations Press the main switch on the front. The cooling bath starts. Press the main switch again to stop the cooling bath. NOTE If the bath is stopped for more than 5 minutes, the bath must not be switched on again until the temperature in the bath is above 0 C otherwise the cooling system may be damaged.
CBN 8 / 18 / 28-30 INSTRUCTION MANUAL Page 7 of 9 8. Typical applications 1. Freezing and cooling of tubes and flasks positioned directly in the bath even without a thermostat installed. An accessory rod for holding flasks and tubes is available. This application should only be used with liquids that will not freeze, as the temperature is not regulated. 2. Freezing and cooling of small flasks and tubes. 3. Thermostating of other apparatus as e.g. photometers, by external circulation of the liquid, through a HETO THERMOSTAT. 4. Thermostating of other vessels by application of heat exchanger and extra stirring. 5. Pre-freezing for freeze drying. 6. An accessory spin-freezer is available. 7. Testing of viscosity in different media. 8. Cooling of materials for instance metals, for destructive material testing. 9. Etc. 9. Maintenance Cleaning: Disconnect the main cable. It is essential that especially the air-cooled condenser is kept clean and free from dust to offer maximum performance of the cooling bath. The air-cooled condenser therefore must be carefully cleaned at least twice a year. Use a soft brush and a vacuum cleaner. Be careful not to damage the fins. Drain and exchange the liquid on a regular basis to avoid stability problems. The outer cabinet is made from polyester coated steel. It may be cleaned with a wet cloth soaked in mild detergent. When cleaning the front and rear panels be careful not to get liquid inside the compressor compartment, the cable connection or the main switch. The top plate and the inner bath are made from stainless steel. Although this type of steel is particularly resistant to chloride containing solutions it is important to avoid high concentrations of halogens - especially chloride (all types of stainless steels are prone to attack from chlorides). Even this highly resistant quality may show rust, often coming from rusting of deposits of ordinary steel or deposits from external sources. The corrosion resistance of the stainless steel is closely connected to the surface conditions, which therefore should be maintained at the original conditions. The stainless steel surface should be cleaned with water - if necessary with added detergent or alcohol. Deposits of rust and/or calciumcarbonate may be easily removed with nitric acid (10 %) on a cloth. Wear protection gloves when working with nitric acid.
Page 8 / 9 INSTRUCTION MANUAL CBN 8 / 18 / 28-30 Fuses: For safety purposes the cooling bath is equipped with fuses. The fuses are dimensioned in such a way that they will only break in case of a serious fault. The user may change the fuses but the unit should as soon as possible after such a failure is inspected by authorised personnel to determine the reason for the broken fuses. 10.
