THE HERITAGE Make culinary history in a setting dating back centuries
Alderley Park s history can be traced back to the Doomsday Book. But its story truly begins in the sixteenth century when it became home to the Stanleys who famously took the crown from Richard III and placed it on Henry VII at Bosworth Field. In 1779, the Stanley s Great Hall burnt to the ground to be replaced by Alderley House and the current walled and water gardens. The house then continued to grow and by the 20th century had 60 bedrooms and six great entertaining rooms. Its noted guests included Prime Minister Herbert Asquith every Christmas and the young Winston Churchill whose legacy remains in the shape of the sweet chestnut tree he planted in the Park, now known as the Churchill Tree. Despite a second fire in 1931 which consumed much of the mansion, many of the estate buildings and structures remain within the fine parkland landscape and are now designated heritage assets. They include the vast double courtyard of stables dating from 1815 and 1838, with a hexagonal dovecote, hay barn and monumental gateway. Here too is the former Tenants Hall, the only section of the original house still standing, and earmarked for the restaurant. Today, with the overall beauty and heritage of the Park not just intact but flourishing, a new chapter in the history of Alderley Park begins as Bruntwood develop it to create a strong community in which to live, work and enjoy life to the full.
