I. Introduction The Vicot gas fired water chiller is a high efficiency gas fired water chiller for residential and light commercial air conditioning duty. The chiller is designed to be installed outdoors and connected with a chilled water coil located in the indoor air handling system for cooling and dehumidifying the occupied space. Chilled water is produced by an air cooled ammonia water absorption chiller based on the highly efficient generator absorber heat ex changer (GAX) absorption cycle. It can automatically modulate its cooling capacity down to 50% for improved comfort, humidity control and operating efficiency at part load conditions. Natural gas supplies the main energy input to the absorption chiller. A small amount of electrical energy is required to drive the pumps and fans. The thermostat, indoor blower, chilled water coil and piping are to be field supplied.
II. Absorption Principle Comparison between conventional and VICOT GAX absorption chiller Conventional Absorption Chiller VICOT GAX Absorption Chiller Figure1 Figure2 III. GAX Absorption Cycle The highly efficient GAX cycle diagram is shown in Figure2 First, note that besides the five major components of the simple cycle, several heat exchangers have been added to attain the high efficiency performance. These include the Generator Absorber Heat Exchanger (GAX), the Adiabatic Section, the Generator Heat Exchanger (GHX), the Rectifier and the Subcooler. The increased efficiency of the GAX cycle is the result of achieving this simultaneous vapor generation and vapor absorption by internal exchange of heat. The vapor that is generated in the generator absorber heat exchanger saves the gas that would otherwise have to be used to generate it in a conventional generator.

X. Application The GAX chiller is usually installed in an air conditioning system that consists of chilled water distribution system and thermostat. The GAX chiller is installed in an air conditioning system very much like a conventional electric residential split system, as shown in Figure 5. The air cooled chiller must be located outdoors where it has free access to outdoor air for heat rejection. The chilled water coil is located indoors in the supply air plenum of a central air handler. Chilled water piping connects the GAX chiller with the indoor coil. Figure6
XI. Typical Chilled Water Piping Chilled water piping can be PVC, polyethylene, galvanized steel pipe, copper or other materials, depending on the nature of the installation. Typical fittings at the chiller unit are shown in Figure6.It is recommended that a ball valve be installed in ach line for flow adjustment and shut off. Pressure taps are required for adjusting the flow rate as a function of the evaporator water side pressure drop. Figure7
