Building Code Monthly Review March 2015 The Brevard County Building Code Monthly Review discusses issues of interest, including new code information and a brief status of the permit activity for the unincorporated area of Brevard County. Additional information and forms are available at our web site at http://www.brevardcounty.us/planningdev/buildingcode/building Legislative Initiative - HB 915 County staff has proposed language amending the certification requirements of Florida Statute Chapter 468 for licensure of building inspectors and plans examiners and successfully worked with the Florida House of Representatives Business and Professions Sub-Committee staff to incorporate the proposed amendments into House Bill 915, adopted March 10, 2015 by the House Sub-Committee. The purpose of the changes is to address the statewide shortage of licensed building inspectors and plans examiners, which has resulted in understaffing of building departments, and will likely lead to additional permitting costs and plan review turn-around time. Please show your support of HB 915 and the companion Senate Bill 1232 by contacting your state legislators: www.myfloridahouse.gov. www.flsenate.gov/senators. 14 Hours Continuing Education Courses Brevard County will be hosting two days of continuing education presented by the Building Officials Association of Florida. The Site Seminar provides 14 hours of approved continuing education training designed to meet State mandated licensing requirements for contractors, building inspectors and plans examiners, and architects/engineers. The course is designed around changes to the Florida Code. The 5 th Edition of the Florida Building Code (2014) will be implemented on June 30, 2015. When: Where: Cost: Register: 8:00 A.M. 4:00 P.M., Tuesday and Wednesday, April 7 th & 8 th Brevard County Government Center, Building C (Commission Room 1 st floor) 2725 Judge Fran Jamieson Way, Viera, FL 32940 BOAF Members: $125 for 1 day, $250 for both days Non-members: $165 for 1 day, $330 both days Visit BOAF website for more info: www.boaf.net Attention Seawall and Dock Contractors The Public Works/Survey Division requires that an unaltered, original signed and raised seal boundary survey be provided in addition to any other requirements that other review agencies may need. If another

agency requests that you draw the proposed improvements on top of the survey, we recommend that you make a copy of the original survey and draw the requested information onto that, thus preserving the integrity of the original. The Fire Side The Florida Fire Prevention Code (FFPC) 5th edition was adopted on January 1, 2015. The Florida Fire Prevention Code is derived from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Fire Code (NFPA 1) and the Life Safety Code (NFPA 101) as defined in Florida Statute 633. The 5th edition of the FFPC will adopt the 2012 editions of NFPA 1 and 101 with the Florida changes. Newer editions of the individual NFPA codes may have been adopted at the same time. Florida Administrative Code 69-A has also been updated. More information @ Florida State Fire Marshal Classes covering the changes to the codes may still be available through the Florida State Fire College, local colleges, the FFMIA or other technical organizations. Permits submitted on or after 1/1/15 will be reviewed for compliance with the Florida Fire Prevention Code (FFPC) 5th edition and the 1/1/15 Florida adopted editions of the individual NFPA codes. Permits submitted before 1/1/15 will continue to be reviewed for compliance to FFPC 2010 and the Florida adopted NFPA Codes at time of submittal. Ensure your plans reference and are in compliance with the currently adopted edition of all relevant codes. Spring Breaks start this month. Before you and your family travel learn more about hotel fire safety click here hotels and motels fire safety tips The Time change is March 8th; it s time to change the batteries in all your smoke alarms. Smoke Alarm Fact- When you push the test button you are only testing the battery not the smoke alarm. Most smoke alarms need to be replaced every 8-10 years, even those that are hard-wired with battery backup. New smoke alarms have either a date of manufacture or an expiration date on the back of the alarm. If there is no date on the back, your alarm is probably past due for replacement. Don t forget to test your Smoke Alarms at least monthly, replace the battery at least yearly, and replace your smoke alarm at least every 10 years. More information on Smoke Alarms and other subjects from the Nation Fire Protection Association @ safety tip sheets Electric Code Committee Meetings are located at the HBCA (1500 W. Eau Gallie Blvd.) on the second Wednesday of each month.
