Congratulations on your purchase of the DTG Pretreat-R Gen II. To insure successful performance of your DTG Pretreat-R Gen II, please read this entire manual thoroughly. Like inkjet printing, your DTG Pretreat-R Gen II will require some preventive maintenance and a complete understanding of its operations and control systems. This manual is offered to help you get the best possible performance from this equipment. The DTG Pretreat-R Gen II has been designed to work in conjunction with your inkjet printer. To achieve optimum printing results, the proper amount of pretreat solution needs to be deposited on your printing surface on a consistent basis. If you have any questions about the DTG Pretreat-R Gen II, please contact us. We are always ready to be help. Your comments and suggestions are always welcome. Should you need additional on-site set-up or training, your local DTG Dealer is available to assist. On-site service rates are quoted on request. DTG Pretreat-R Gen II Manufactured by: Lawson Screen & Digital Products, Inc. 5110 Penrose St. St. Louis, MO 63115 Service Telephone: 314-382-9300 Serial Number: (Please fill-in for future reference) Refer to this serial number when speaking with the Service Department. It contains valuable information related to this piece of equipment. Important Notes: Always Turn the Electric Power and Air OFF while servicing the unit! Do Not operate this machine without reading this entire instruction manual first! Do Not start adjusting the unit until its entire function and operation is fully understood. If you have any questions, please call prior to operation. Remember, even though the DTG Pretreat-R Gen II is shipped fully assembled and is easy to set-up and operate, if you want special and/or individualized instruction, this additional service is available. Site training is offered at your location for a reasonable fee, plus expenses. Contact your dealer for more details. This manual is meant to serve as a general instructional guide and reference manual for the DTG Pretreat-R Gen II. Certain design details are subject to change without notice. It is important that the nozzles always be kept clean. If the pretreat solution is allowed to dry in the nozzle, the nozzle will become clogged and damaged (nozzles are not covered by the parts warranty). Also, use Distilled water, as this is free of minerals found in tap water. Otherwise mineral deposits will form on the nozzles and they will become clogged. DTG & Lawson assume no obligation regarding changes to the unit, herein described. Designs are subject to change without notice. This machine is designed for the industrial/commercial DTG printer. Adjusting the Spray Pattern The basic spray pattern and height of the Spray Head has been pre-set at the factory. However, in case an adjustment has changed as a result of shipping, or if you desire a different spray pattern (i.e. larger or smaller or centered differently), simply raise or lower the Spray Head or adjust the Spray Head leftto-right inside the Spray Chamber. If you want to change the actual width of the spray, we also have a variety of different Tips that you may purchase. The air pressure (psi) will also affect the spray pattern. Call your DTG Dealer for additional details. Daily Maintenance It is critical that you clean the spray nozzle on a daily basis. If you do not clean the nozzle with distilled water after use, the nozzle will clog and be ruined. (We strongly suggest you purchase extra Tips, as they will, one day, become clogged this is unavoidable) Simply follow these instructions: 1. Clean the Spray Tip: A. Turn ON the Air Regulator Air Supply; B. Lift the Front/Top Panel to access the Spray Chamber; C. Hold the Prime/Clean Bottle underneath the Spray Tip; D. Press the Purge Button inward (keeping the button depressed) and you will notice that the water (use distilled water) will start spraying. Continue to depress the button until the water has fully cleaned the line (i.e. it is clear) and the water is spraying totally clear; E. You are now ready to turn the unit off for the day. NOTE: Cleaning the tip by the Purge Method will also clean the spray fluid valve. 2. Clean All Surfaces: All surfaces where pretreat solution has been sprayed needs to be wiped down with warm, soapy water. Use a sponge and thoroughly clean the platen and bottom pans where you notice any pretreat residue. Weekly Maintenance 1. Soak the nozzle in warm, soapy water and gently clean with a soft bristle tooth brush to ensure there is no particle residue left on the nozzle/spray tip. 2. Rinse and Scrub the inside of any Canister that has pretreat solution in it on a weekly basis. If you do not scrub the inside of the pretreat pressure canister, it will pit and eventually leak (this is not covered by the parts warranty as this will never occur if you scrub the salts away). DTG Pretreat Pretreat-R Gen II Version 1 Instruction Manual v.1.5 6-1-11 Page 5

General Operational Notes and Comments: The DTG Pretreat-R Gen II Because of the pretreat chemistry, it is important to keep the canister, the canister lid, the inside of the spray chamber and all other components clean of pretreat overspray. The pretreat residue causes general corrosion and can cause leakage in the canister and/or the canister lid if not cleaned (not covered by the warranty because this can only happen if you fail to clean). You should clean all surfaces on a daily basis with a sponge and a warm/soapy solution. The Slip-on Fluid Post Filter also needs to be kept clean so the fluid can flow. By using this filter and keeping it clean, and/or replacing on a regular basis, will help minimize tip clogging and provide a cleaner solution to your garment. This is your only filtered protection of the spray head. Platen Travel Notes: The travel length of the platen has been pre-set at the factory. The limit switches on the carriage rail determine the length of the spray on to the platen. The Spray Start and End range is determined by adjusting the slide knobs located by the scale on the side of the unit. This scale is a guideline as to when the spray starts and stops. The platen is adjusted to match the scale by adjusting the position of the platen on its support rail. Important Note: The start of the spray is not always exact. This is due to a variety of technical/air/temperature/humidity and other factors. As a result, it is best lay the neck of the shirt towards the spray head (i.e. away from the operator). This will allow the spray to start towards the bottom of the shirt and allow the more critical area around the neck to be evenly covered by the pretreat solution. Adjusting the Length of Spray: The Start and End points (i.e. length of spray) is determined by adjusting the sliding stroke sensors located on the side of the machine. Adjust the slides (length of spray) according to your particular job requirement. Changing & Cleaning: The DTG Pretreat-R Gen II It is critical that you clean the spray tip(s) on a daily basis. If you do not clean the tip with distilled water after use, the tip will clog and be ruined. (We strongly suggest you purchase extra tips, as they will one day become clogged, and this is not covered by your warranty) Simply follow these instructions: A. Turn the Main On B. Insert/Attach the Pressure Canister, filled with Distilled Water C. Lift the Front/Top Panel to access the Spray Chamber D. Hold the Prime/Clean Bottle/Container underneath the Spray Tip you are cleaning E. Press the Purge Button inward (keeping the button depressed) and you will notice that the distilled water will start spraying. Continue to depress the button until the water has fully cleaned the line (i.e. it is clear) and the water is spraying totally clear F. With warm, soapy water and a sponge, clean all surfaces where pretreat solution has been sprayed G. You are now ready to turn the unit off for the day You should also periodically remove the tip, soak in warm soapy water and clean with a soft-bristle toothbrush. This will ensure that deposits that cannot be seen do not accumulate at the edges of the stainless steel tips (see photo below). If you have a high-pressure air gun, you can spray air through the tip to help loosen/remove any unwanted particles. Use a high-powered magnifier to examine the spray tip (you cannot properly inspect the tip with magnification). Removing particles with a toothpick will not damage the spray nozzle. 1. Spray Head (#945-500-0) 2. Nozzle Cap (#945-540-4) 3. Spray Tip (# depends on style) Changing the Pressure Canister To change the pressure canister, Turn Off the Power Switch (so the platen does not move by accident). Turn Off the In-Let Air Flow Device (photo DTG.410.6). Then evacuate the stored air pressure by releasing the Safety Pop Valve on the Canister Lid. Adjusting the Spray Pattern The DTG Pretreat-R Gen II The basic spray pattern has been pre-set at the factory. However, in case an adjustment has changed as a result of shipping, or if you desire a different spray pattern (i.e. larger or smaller or positioned differently), follow this procedure: A. Lift the Front/Top Panel to access the Spray Chamber B. Prime the system by following the instructions in described in #7 above C. Move the Spray Head up or down by simply loosening the bolt/knob as desired D. Move the Spray Head left or right, as desired D Fluid Mechanical ON/OFF Valve 945-520-0 C Switch in OFF position. Switch in ON position. Note: The Spray Head Height is set at the factory 9 from the platen. Air Pressure should be set at 45-50 psi (subject to your desired results). Basic Spray Patterns & Fluid Deposits The DTG Pretreat-R Gen II The following are a few basic spray/operating principles for adjusting the spray: 1. The height of the nozzle/tip to the substrate will affect the overall width of the spray pattern. With the tip being 9 inches away, every inch closer will narrow the with pattern proximity one inch. The nozzle design/style (i.e. the Tip Number) will dictate the spray width. 2. Different solutions and different fabrics may require differing fluid deposits to achieve optimum printing results with your DTG printer. As a result, we offer a variety of nozzles/tips to accommodate varying solutions, garments and specialty applications. DTG offer 9 different nozzle tips for a wide variety of standard and specialty applications. Ask your salesperson about different nozzle/tip options. And you should always keep spares on hand (just like you drive with a spare tire in your car). 3. The speed of the platen greatly affects the amount of solution applied to the substrate. Charting your platen speed settings may be helpful for determining the ideal deposit for the various products you print. 4. The air pressure will affect the spray pattern in two ways. First, it will affect the volume of fluid being sprayed. Second, the more air pressure that is used can affect the amount of over spray. With excessive amount of air pressure, the fluid will actually bounce off the substrate with the result of fluid going to the sidewalls and the bottom of the unit. The unit is designed not to work with air pressure under 28 p.s.i. and not over 65 psi. The safety pop-it valve will engage at 70 psi. 5. The recommended PSI regulator setting, for general usage, is 45-50. Adjust as your individual requirements may dictate. DTG Pretreat Pretreat-R Gen II Version 1 Instruction Manual v.1.5 6-1-11 Page 9

Maintenance Procedures The DTG Pretreat-R Gen II It is critical that you clean the Spray Tip Every Day. If you do not clean the spray tip with distilled water after use, the tip will clog and be ruined. It only takes one failure to clean ( oops, I forgot sorry ) to clog your spray tip. (We strongly suggest you purchase extra nozzles, as they will, at some point even with daily cleaning become clogged, and this is not covered by your warranty) Simply follow these instructions to Clean the Spray Tip: 1. Replace the Pretreat Pressure Canister with the Distilled Water Pressure Canister 2. Turn the Main On 3. Turn toggle switch to Water so you can clean the tip 4. Lift the Front/Top Panel to access the Spray Chamber 5. Hold the Prime/Clean Bottle underneath the Spray Tip you are cleaning 6. Press the Prime Button inward (keeping the button depressed) and you will notice the unit will start spraying. Continue to depress the button until the water has fully cleaned the line (i.e. it is clear) and the water is spraying totally clear follow this procedure ever time you are done using the unit for the day) 7. With warm, soapy water and a sponge, clean all surfaces where pretreat solution has been sprayed 8. You are now ready to turn the unit off for the day DTG Pretreat Pretreat-R Gen II Version 1 Instruction Manual v.1.5 6-1-11 Page 10

Inside Walls, Pans, Drain Hoses & More The DTG Pretreat-R Gen II With the spray chamber cover removed, you will see the sides of the spray chamber. The sides of the chamber drain the overspray of the fluid to the Drain Buckets located at the rear of the DTG Pretreat-R Gen II. Clean these surfaces daily with warm, soapy water and scrub with a brush on a weekly basis. Please understand that pretreat solution contains a variety of caustic items (like salt) that, over time, will corrode surfaces. As a result, you must take the extra few minutes a day and wipe down the inside of your DTG Pretreat-R Gen II and all surfaces with warm, soapy water. Also be sure to wipe down the outside of the spray head itself and all areas that look like they are being sprayed with solution. Note: The Spray Chamber has been designed to slide back-and-forth for easy cleaning access*. The platen system has been designed to the platen can manually be slid back-and-forth by simply turning off the In-Let Air Flow device. * To slide open the chamber cover, first remove the shipping screw from inside the chamber. DTG Pretreat Pretreat-R Gen II Version 1 Instruction Manual v.1.5 6-1-11 Page 11

Canisters The DTG Pretreat-R Gen II To add solution to a Pressure Canister, simply turn the can counterclockwise to loosen; and clockwise to tighten. It is important when reinstalling the canister to make sure you do not cross-threat the top when tightening. There is no need to over tighten; simply turn with firm pressure. Note: When reinstalling the canister, it is easier if you support the bottom of the can with one hand and turn your bottom hand in unison with your upper hand. This method seems to allow the threads to be more easily aligned. We also suggest you use Vaseline on the threads, as this helps to eliminate minor air leaks around the screw threads/top. Also, the inside of the canister will need to be thoroughly cleaned out with water, each week, and the inside brushed clean. Do not leave any salty residue on the inside of the pretreat solution canister for longer than one (1) week, as salty residue remains will eventually eat through the canister and create a pin hole. Also be sure to clean the Canister Lid. Leakage on the lid can occur if not cleaned, as the salty residue will eat through the rubber gasket and eventually the metal. There are times air may leak out of the solution container. Check to make sure the canister is tight and secure, or that it is not over-tight. With two hands, slightly move the canister clockwise to tighten or counter-clockwise to loosen. Placing a small amount of Vaseline or Grease on the threads of the canister will also help prevent air leakage. Removing the Canister Installing the Canister DTG Pretreat Pretreat-R Gen II Version 1 Instruction Manual v.1.5 6-1-11 Page 12

Notice: This photo shows an example of someone who did not clean and scrub away the salty residue inside their canisters on a regular basis. As a result, this canister developed a leak, not covered by the warranty, because of customer neglect. Replacement Canister #945-508-0-EA Important Note: Remember to Turn the Air Off, before loosening any of the canisters! Also, you should pull the ring attached to the safety pop valve, and keep it pulled out for about 5 seconds this will allow the air in the system to escape. Main Control Panel & Key Items: 9 Rear Corner VERY IMPORTANT!!! 1. The E-Stop Button (#2) needs to be in the up (pulled out) position to operate the unit. 2. The E-Stop Button is used for an emergency stop. The switch is engaged when it is in the "pulled out" setting, ready for use. If the switch is left in the "pulled out" position for an extended period of time, power will be going to the safety valve that can cause over heating of the valve. The E-Stop should be pushed in when the unit is not going to be used. Turning off the "Main Toggle Switch", does not turn off the switch. 3. Turning the unit on and off is accomplished by the use of the Toggle Main Switch (# 3). This switch is independent of the E-Stop Switch. 4. Always disconnect the power cord when servicing the unit and when the unit is not in use. # Description Part # 1 Platen Speed Control 945-801-0 2 E-Stop Button 945-301-3 3 Toggle Main Switch 945-303-0 4 Start Push Button 945-301-5 5 Purge Push Button 945-301-4 6 Indicator Light 945-302-5 7 Platen Scale #18 945-120-4 8 Platen Location Screws N/A 9 Platen Entrance Control 945-801-0 DTG Pretreat Pretreat-R Gen II Version 1 Instruction Manual v.1.5 6-1-11 Page 14

Suggested Replacement Parts to Keep On-Hand Spray Tips: The DTG Pretreat-R Gen II The spray tip is the most important replacement part on your DTG Pretreat-R Gen II unit. The spray pattern and care of the tip has been noted many times in this manual. We suggest that you keep at least two (2) replacement tips on hand. The quantity of each Spray Tip that you stock will depend on how much you use your DTG Pretreat-R Gen II, whether or not you are using distilled water as recommended, your level of maintenance and routine of daily cleaning, and what safety factor or comfort level you desire. Here are some of our most popular Spray Tips: Standard 16 Spray Tip: WENA (#945-502-0-EA) 14 Spray Tip: LSW-01-85 (#945-502-7-EA) 16 Spray Tip with Greater Fluid Deposit: WENL (#945-501-2-EA) 4 Spray Pocket Tip: RNNA (#945-501-7-EA) Slip-On Fluid Post Filters: This is an inexpensive filter ($3.95) that removes debris and larger mass particulates from the pretreat solution, before it continues past the pressure canister. It is suggested that 2 of these be kept on-hand. 2 Quart Slip-On Fluid Post Filters: DTG stock #945-507-8-EA Only for International Customers: Because of the extended shipment times to international destinations, the following additional parts are suggested (although these items are rarely defective and traditionally last a long time): (2) Big Relay Item #945-308-0-EA (2) Small Relay Item #945-308-5-EA (1) Valve #6 & 8 Item #945-803-0-EA (1) Valve #5 Item #945-804-0-EA (1) Limit Switch (platen) Item #945-306-7-EA (1) Magnetic Switch (NC) Item #945-306-0-EA (1) Magnetic Switch (NO) Item #945-306-5-EA (2) Spray Head Gasket Kit Item #945-502-9-EA (1) Pop-It Value Item #945-509-0-EA (2) Black Canister Gasket Item #945-508-1B-EA DTG Pretreat Pretreat-R Gen II Version 1 Instruction Manual v.1.5 6-1-11 Page 21
