A 21st century contemporary country mansion in a spectacular riverside setting Medmenham Court has been designed as a luxury contemporary home drawing inspiration from the classic Arts and Crafts era, on the banks of the River Thames. Its eye-catching design fuses internal and external spaces and incorporates an exceptional array of energy efficient and sustainable features.
A unique design The appearance and materials of this highly sustainable home have been carefully developed to create a contemporary design which is innovative, inviting and sensitive to the surrounding landscape. The height, length and width of the main building is fitting for its stunning surroundings and the use of natural timber, glass and zinc allow this landmark home to successfully integrate with the immediate environment. The form, orientation and design harmonise with the existing landscape, which will encourage future occupants to enjoy the beautiful landscape setting. The building s appearance complements and responds positively to its surroundings. The eastern and western elevations effectively blend the building into the landscape when seen from a distance. The two longitudinal elevations (north and south) are designed with a feeling of openness and are pleasantly screened by layered timber shading. Such layers support the building s design ethos to provide virtually no visual impact from key views into the site, whilst presenting a softly contemporary modern appearance. This allows the design to contribute to the visual amenities of the surroundings and work confidently with the local building forms and landscapes. A dominant feature of the design is the roof, which is formed from two contrasting elements. Over the wings is an extensive sedum roof, a living green blanket which slopes downwards towards the ground at the ends. This green roof is designed to mitigate rain water discharge rates via its natural water retention, absorption properties, and the effects of evaporation. Over the central section, there are a series of slender planes which provide overhangs for solar shading. These planes are wing like and give the building its distinctive dynamic appearance. The plan is orientated to optimise natural lighting this will afford greater light levels to all areas, thus minimising the requirement for artificial lighting. Sun-pipes have been incorporated to further reduce lighting requirements and energy loads, and they support the low energy ethos. Reducing solar gain and improving energy efficiency is achieved through large roof overhangs and louvre blades. Wherever possible, exposed thermal mass will be used for floors and walls to absorb heat in summer and reduce the cooling load. Heat and energy will be recovered and reused wherever possible to further reduce energy consumption and CO 2 emissions.
