I. OVERVIEW Junior Floral Design Career Development Event is designed to stimulate student interest in future agricultural education curriculum and FFA activities. II. PURPOSE To stimulate the study of and interest in the design and marketing of floral arrangements through the agricultural education curriculum. III. ELIGIBILITY This event is open to students in grades 6-9 who are agricultural education students and are paid members of a chartered FFA chapter. Each student s name must appear on the chapter s FFA roster at least 10 days prior to competition above the chapter level. IV. SPECIAL NEEDS REQUEST To report any special needs or request special services for a student to compete in a Career Development Event or FFA Award area (Area or State level), it is the responsibility of the FFA advisor to provide a detailed and specific request and explanation in writing. Requests should include written documentation from the school system verifying the IEP and need being requested. Written requests must be submitted to the CDE Superintendent prior to registering for the CDE/event (at least 3 weeks prior to the date of competition). V. RULES 1. Chapters are limited to one contestant. 2. Each contestant will bring to the contest a pencil, clipboard, bucket and their own set of floral design tools. 3. Participants will not be allowed to swap or share tools (calculators, scissors, wire cutters, etc) with other participants. 4. All materials for the designs will be furnished at the event. A minimal supply fee will be charged for consumable supplies. The contestant will be able to take home design and materials after judging at the conclusion of the event. 5. This event will follow the general procedure established for all career development events. 6. It is highly recommended that students wear official dress as outlined in the Official FFA Manual. 7. The State FFA Executive Committee and their appointees will be in charge of this event. 8. The top two individuals from each area will advance to state competition. VI. EVENT FORMAT Contestants will receive a scenario at both the Area and State level CDEs. The design should link with the given scenario. The career development event will be conducted in ONE PHASE: Floral Design at the Area Level: - Arrangement: Using the plant materials provided and the scenario provided, contestants will be asked to make one floral design arrangement announced at the start of the event. The contestants will have 30 minutes to complete the arrangement. Possible arrangements could include body/personal flowers, bud vase, or a 9 flower round arrangement. These designs should reflect the scenario that is given. 1

- Identification of Floral Plant Materials and Tools: Twenty-five items from the FLORAL DESIGN HARD GOOD AND MATERIALS and/or FLORAL DESIGN FRESH PRODUCT (FOLIAGE AND FLOWER LIST) list will be displayed for contestants to identify. One point will be awarded for each correct answer. Participants have 30 minutes to complete this phase of this event. Floral Design at the State Level: - Arrangement: Using the plant materials provided and the scenario provided, contestants will be asked to make two floral design arrangements announced at the start of the event. The contestants will have 30 minutes to complete each arrangement. Possible arrangements could include body/personal flowers, bud vase, or a 9 flower round arrangement.
