In 2001 THESE were a typical public transportation facilities found throughout the S.E. Florida region and in Lauderdale Lakes. Would you take your child for a walk on this corridor? Would you enjoy waiting for the bus here? OF COURSE NOT!
WE DECIDED TO BUILD A BETTER SOLUTION! Lauderdale Lakes now has 10 of these shelters in-place (with 12 more coming in 2013-4) and other corridor communities are doing the same.
The City of Lauderdale Lakes has been winning awards and setting new standards for the transition of declining suburban corridors throughout S.E. Florida to create healthy and vibrant communities. 2010 FLORIDA REDEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION AWARD Outstanding New Building Project City of Lauderdale Lakes Community Redevelopment Agency 2008 FLORIDA REDEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION AWARD Transportation/Transit Enhancements City of Lauderdale Lakes Community Redevelopment Agency LAUDERDLE LAKES LIBRARY & COMMUNITY EDUCATION AND CULTURAL CENTER Adopted in 2004, the Lauderdale Lakes Citizen s Master Plan was crafted from feedback generated during an intensive charrette that finalized almost a year of work in research/analysis and urban and architectural design. The plan is the blueprint that directs public and private investment for key projects that are revitalizing the city s commercial corridors. Among the plan s components was a vision and concept for a mixed-use town center. Today, the new 20,237-square-foot, $6.5-million Lauderdale Lakes Library & Community Cultural and Educational Center is at the heart of the 30-acre Bella Vista Development. This project is a result of a partnership between Broward County and the Lauderdale Lakes CRA. BUS SHELTERS Providing quality bus shelters is an ongoing commitment by the City of Lauderdale Lakes and of the Community Redevelopment Agency to enhance the safety and convenience of transit service customers as they move around the city and the region. Responding to demands for modern transportation alternatives, and given the intensely hot and severe weather in Southeastern Florida, the City of Lauderdale Lakes and the Community Redevelopment Agency have completed the design and development of six new bus shelters. Grant funding is also committed for the development of five additional shelters, with grant applications pending for several more shelters to be added in future years. C-13 Greenway Trail The weed-filled and virtually abandoned corridor along a major regional drainage canal has been transformed to create a two mile long, non-vehicular path that connects City Government facilities, schools and recreational facilities providing pedestrian access to major commercial centers and regional transportation connections.
C-13 GREENWAY TRAIL TODAY *Several other cities in the region are now doing this same work on their canal sections within their jurisdictions as well!
Could we really do any worse than this? S.E. Florida will become the community that we want and need it to become only if we work together collaboratively and continuously.
