The Quarterly Safety Committee meeting was held on Monday, October 15 th at Station 35. On Tuesday, October 16 th, HR Manager Borden proctored the Assistant Fire Marshal examination at Station 34 to establish an eligibility promotional list. Senior Staff held their weekly meeting on Tuesday, October 16 th, at Headquarters Station 31. PIEOs participated in the City of Auburn Health & Wellness Fair on Wednesday, October 17 th. Deputy Chief Swearingen attended the King County Fire Chiefs meeting on Wednesday, October 17 th in Seattle. On Thursday, October 18 th, a Retirement Fair was held at Station 31 with representatives from Department of Retirement Systems, ICMA and Social Security on site conducting presentation to assist VRFA employees in planning for future retirement. Administrator Robertson, DC Swearingen and CFO Horaski attended the WCIA Training and Board Meeting on Friday, October 19 th at SeaTac. 1
Captain Freed attended the King County School CPR Coordinator meeting on Friday, October 19 th in Kent. This Week: Fire Marshal Stewart, AFM Upton & PIEO Hawks will attend the Fire Prevention Institute during the week of October 22 nd in Chelan. On Monday, October 22 nd, Administrator Robertson will present information on the benefits of regionalization to the House of Representatives Local Government Committee in Olympia. DC Swearingen will attend the Zone 3 Strategic Planning meeting on Monday, October 22 nd, in Kent. On Tuesday, October 23 rd, DC Olson will attend the Zone 3 Operations Chiefs meeting at Headquarters Station 31. Senior Staff will hold their weekly meeting on Tuesday, October 23 rd, at Headquarters Station 31. Administrator Robertson will attend the Washington Fire Chiefs Legislative Committee on Thursday, October 25 th in Olympia. All are invited! at 911 Requests for Services / Customer Service: Aid Call: (Auburn) On Monday, October 15 th at 3:18 p.m., VRFA firefighters and King County Medics responded to the South Auburn Bartell Drug Store for an adult male in respiratory distress. Firefighters arrived to find the patient experiencing extreme difficulty breathing. The patient was treated at the scene and transported to MultiCare Auburn Medical Center (MAMC) by King County Medics. Fire Alarm: (Algona) On Tuesday, October 16 th at 1:21 p.m., firefighters were dispatched to a commercial fire alarm. Firefighters arrived to find a false alarm with a faulty sprinkler system. Firefighters shut down and drained the system to prevent any water damage. 2
Aid Call: (Lea Hill) On Wednesday, October 17 th at 4:47 p.m., firefighters responded to a teenage male complaining of abdominal pain. The patient was transported to MAMC by private ambulance. Aid Call: (Pacific) On Thursday, October 18 th at 10:31 p.m., firefighters responded to an adult male that fell and cut his cheek. Patient had a deep laceration that required further medical attention and was transported to MAMC by private ambulance. Commercial Fire: (Auburn) On Friday, October 19 th at 4:33 p.m., firefighters responded to an apartment fire in the 2900 block of R Street SE. Crews arrived to find one unit involved and were able to extinguish the fire 10 minutes after the initial dispatch. Aid Call: (Lakeland Hills) On Saturday, October 20 th at 7:00 p.m., firefighters responded to a male toddler having a seizure. The patient was evaluated by firefighters and King County Medics and transported by private ambulance to MAMC for further evaluation. Commercial Fire: (Auburn) On Sunday, October 21 st at 8:34 a.m., firefighters responded to an automatic fire alarm. Upon arrival they found smoke coming from the building and upgraded to a full response. The smoke was caused by an overheated piece of equipment and firefighters were able to ensure that the fire was confined to that. Training Division Activities: Year 2017 2018 Weekly 293 336 Year to Date 20,931 21,995 4 TH Quarter Training: Crews were given an opportunity to work on quarterly and annual training objectives. These objectives are assigned throughout the year and are based on the required training as determined by NFPA and the Washington Administrative Code. JATC Tests: JATC (Joint Apprentice Training Committee) firefighters will be evaluated at their Step 1A assessments. This will be one of several annual apprentice tests that newer firefighters are evaluated with during their first 36 months of employment. They must complete a written test and then also show proficiency in a practical assessment. Crews have been actively preparing for this by studying written materials and completing manipulative drills as practice. These tests are proctored by the South King County Training Consortium and VRFA apprenticeship team members. 3

The fire was contained to one unit of a 6-plex. The cause of the fire is accidental; and is believed to be due to ignitable vapors from paint thinner in an enclosed space ignited by an arching event. Damage is estimated to be $18,000. On Sunday, October 21 st an accidental commercial fire occurred in the 1400 block of W. Main Street. The fire was confined to electrical equipment and surrounding combustible and was attributed to improper ventilation of overheating equipment. Dollar loss is estimated at $20,000. Training: FMO staff attended 2 HazMat webinars conducted by Will Winslow as part of ongoing continuing education. Public Education PIEO s staffed a table at the City of Auburn s Health and Wellness Fair providing information on car seats, CPR classes, bike helmets, fire extinguishers and fire safety. PIEO staff conducted fire safety and evacuation classes for residents at Gustaves Manor and Wayland Arms. 4
PIEO staff assisted a new mom with the installation of a rear facing convertible car seat for her one month-old daughter. The Fire Prevention Week (month) campaign continued on social media pages. Posts were made to social media pages regarding fire crews and staff wearing pink shirts this week to support Breast Cancer Awareness month, calls for service and the Station 31 Open House. The website redesign committee chose Galactic Ideas to redesign the VRFA website. Notices were sent to all of those who submitted bids through the RFP process. Planning and Logistics P&L received 8 apparatus and 8 facility/small tool maintenance requests. BC Larberg and Emergency Management Coordinator Sarah Yancey attended the Auburn School District Community Emergency Planning meeting. P&L staff attended the Retirement Benefits Fair at station 31. BC Larberg took part in a training webinar for AFG Grants. DC Olson and BC Larberg attended an open house at the new Wellness Center at SKCFTC. 5
