City of Ottawa Project No. CR006230 Page 1 of 8 PART 1 - GENERAL 1.1 Reference Standards.1 Conform to the following:.1 Provincial and municipal building and fire regulations as approved by Provincial Fire Marshall..2 National Fire Protection Association Standards: NFPA 13..3 Reid Stenhouse Limited Standards.4 Insurer's Advisory Organization (IAO).5 Factory Mutual (FM).6 NFPA 20 1.2 Contractors.1 Acceptable Contractors:.1 Grinnell.2 Ottawa Sprinkler.3 Escape Fire Protection 1.3 Description of Work.1 The work includes, but is not necessarily limited to the following:.1 Removal of all existing sprinkler piping distribution within the existing building, back to the sprinkler valve closet..2 Design and installation of a new sprinkler system to serve the existing and the new construction..3 Testing and commissioning of complete system. 1.4 Design Criteria.1 Sprinklers are to be hydraulically designed for the coverage and occupancy as indicated..2 Carry out flow test of water main and submit results for Engineer's review prior to submitting hydraulic calculations..3 Survey existing sprinkler system as required, and incorporate necessary information to the shop drawings..4 All sprinkler piping shall be installed to allow diffusers or lights to be relocated to any position within the ceiling grid for lay-in tile suspended ceilings.

City of Ottawa Project No. CR006230 Page 2 of 8.5 Heads shall be located in the centre of the ceiling tiles in areas with suspended ceilings..6 The location of heads in all areas shall be coordinated with Architect and Engineer..7 All branch piping shall be installed in the joist space (where applicable) to minimize future interference..8 All sprinkler mains installed within areas with no suspended ceilings shall be installed as high as possible. Refer to architectural and structural drawing for general layouts and beam openings to install piping..9 Sprinklers in elevator machine rooms shall be sidewall type only, or where not possible, provide drain trays under all piping..10 Sprinkler system to be seismically restrained to Ontario Building Code and NFPA # 13 requirements. Shop drawings to be certified by a Professional Engineer..11 Provide the following zones:.1 Ground Floor..2 Second Floor.12 Design densities to be confirmed with IAO or FM as follows:.1 Library Areas: 0.1 gpm/sq.ft. over 1500 sq.ft..2 Mechanical Areas: 0.15 gpm/ sq.ft. over 1500 sq.ft. 1.5 Shop Drawings.1 Drawings and calculations shall be certified by a Professional Engineer registered in the Province of Ontario..2 Submit shop drawings and technical information for the review and approval of the Engineer. Two prints are required..3 Drawings are required for sprinkler heads, siamese connections, sprinkler layout, alarm valve, accessories, and hydraulic calculations. Drawing to incorporate the existing sprinkler valve and piping distribution system, including all necessary modifications to the existing system and equipment to complete the installation.

City of Ottawa Project No. CR006230 Page 3 of 8.4 Sprinkler layout drawings shall be submitted at the same scale as the architectural drawings and must be on AutoCAD 2008 or later. Manual drawings will not be accepted..5 Submit hydraulic calculations for review, certified by a Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario..6 Submit copies of all necessary information to the Client's insurance advisors and obtain their approval before proceeding with installation. Any modifications required to the installation to obtain this approval shall be to the contractor's account. 1.6 Coordination and Cooperation.1 This trade shall be responsible for fully coordinating his piping with those of the HVAC, plumbing, electrical and other contractors..2 Obtain drawings from HVAC contractor and super-impose these on sprinkler drawings where necessary to show areas of conflict..3 Survey existing systems and building conditions..4 Cooperate with all existing tenants to minimize the inconvenience during the installation of systems in occupied areas. 1.7 Maintenance Data.1 Provide maintenance data for sprinkler system, for incorporation into the maintenance manual in accordance with Division 1. 1.8 Earthquake Protection.1 Sprinkler system shall be restrained for earthquake protection in accordance with NFPA 13. PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.1 Pipe, Valves and Fittings.1 Pipe, Valves and Fittings:.1 Up to NPS 2 shall be schedule 40 black steel, lightwall threadable pipe; to ASTM A-135, A-53, or A-795 with

City of Ottawa Project No. CR006230 Page 4 of 8 threaded joints or style 005 firelock couplings with Vic plus gasket system..2 NPS 2-1/2 to NPS 4 shall be Schedule 40 black steel to ASTM A53 with mechanical cut grooved couplings, or engineered lightwall pipe with roll grooved couplings to ASTM A795 Type E Grade A complete with angle bolt pads..3 Schedule 10 black steel pipe to ASTM A53 may be used for NPS 2-1/2 to NPS 5 and schedule 20 for NPS 6 and over, with roll grooved couplings complete with angle bolt pads..4 Any below ground piping shall be either ductile iron Class 51 or if not also serving domestic water system may be black steel protected against corrosion with Denso tape applied with a minimum 50% overlap of the joints..5 Where a grooved system is used, all grooved end products shall be of one manufacturer..2 Fittings:.1 Shall be Class 125/150 for system pressures up to 1200 kpa (175 psig), and shall be Class 250/300 for system pressures over 1200 kpa (175 psig) and up to 2070 kpa (300 psig)..2 Up to NPS 2 shall be malleable iron threaded fittings Class 150 or 300 to ANSI B16.3, or cold drawn electroplated steel with integral O-ring seals..3 Over NPS 2 shall be cast iron flanged fittings Class 125 or 250 to ANSI B16.1 or malleable iron flanged fittings Class 150/300 to ASTM B16.5, with hex head nuts and bolts to ASTM A307 and 1.6 mm thick plain or cloth inserted red rubber gaskets to ANSI B16.20 and B16.2. Alternatively approved ULC listed mechanical grooved couplings may be used..3 Valves:.1 All valves shall be UL or ULC listed for fire protection service, and be FM approved..2 Up to NPS 2 valves shall be bronze to ASTM B61 outside screw and yoke style Crane No.459 or approved equal..3 Over NPS 2 gate valves shall be flanged cast iron body, bronze mount OS&Y bolted bonnet and yoke, bronze seat and disc, Crane No.10269 or approved equal up to 1375 kpa (200 psi) working pressure..4 Over NPS 2 butterfly valves shall be grooved end ductile iron polyphenylene coated body, with EPDM coated ductile iron disc, complete with weatherproof manual actuator, and

City of Ottawa Project No. CR006230 Page 5 of 8 two prewired SPDT supervisory switches. Valve to be rated for not less than 1200 kpa (175 psi). Acceptable Material: Victaulic style 750W and 728..5 Check valves shall be grooved end ductile iron body with spring loaded single disc check, and resilient EPDM seat rated for up to 1375 kpa (200 psi)..6 Inspectors test valves shall be Victaulic Style 720 or equal, rated 300 psi with sight glass..7 Floor by floor zones: A fully integrated device that combines the flow switch, pressure gauge and the Testmaster II into a single factory assembly. Acceptable Material: Victaulic 747 Riser Manifold..4 Backflow Preventers: For isolation of antifreeze systems use an RPP backflow preventer to CSA B64..5 Pipe Hangers: Shall be ULC listed for fire protection service and installed in accordance with NFPA 13. 2.2 Signs.1 Signs: fabricated from metal with chain suspension; white letters on red background. 2.3 Sprinkler Heads.1 All heads to be Factory Mutual approved..2 Heads in areas without ceilings to be brass upright, painted white. Temperature rating 74 C (165 F.)..3 Heads in areas with ceilings (suspended T-bar, drywall, or any other types of ceilings) shall be white concealed type, temperature rating 74 C (165 F.).4 Supply spare heads of each type and wrenches in a suitably marked cabinet in accordance with NFPA 13. 2.4 Siamese Connection.1 Provide new chrome plated brass siamese fire department connection as indicated to supply sprinkler system with two NPS 2-1/2 female hose connections fitted with caps and chains. Threads

Acceptable Material: NFE Model 229..2 Piping from connection shall be the same size as the sprinkler system. Include horizontal check valves and automatic drip discharging to nearest floor drain for connections..3 Identify pumper connections with sign having raised letters at least 25 mm in size cast on plate or fitting reading "AUTOMATIC SPRINKLER SYSTEM". 2.5 Supervisory and Alarm Switches.1 Supervisory switches for butterfly valves shall be Potter Electric Signal Co. Model PCVS-2..2 Supervisory switches for OS&Y gate valves shall be Potter Electric Signal Co. Model OSYSU-2..3 Waterflow switches shall be Potter Electric Signal Co.Model VSR-F..4 Supervisory and alarm pressure switches shall be Potter Electric Signal Co. Model PSS-40 for dry sprinkler systems and Model PSS-120 for wet sprinkler systems. 2.6 Wet Pipe System.1 Provide complete with following:.1 Alarm valve.2 Indicating control valves.3 Excess pressure pump and pressure switch.4 Water pressure gauges on inlet and discharge of alarm valve..5 Piping and fittings.6 Valves.7 Hangers.8 Floor and ceiling escutcheon plates..2 Provide alarm valve complete with excess pressure pump and standard accessories, drain valves, check valves, alarm connections and water gauges. Provide indicating type valves for controlling water supply and alarm shutoff.

City of Ottawa Project No. CR006230 Page 7 of 8.3 Provide water flow alarm, valve tamper alarm, and low pressure supervisory alarm devices..4 Provide excess pressure pump capable of pumping system to 25 psi in excess of normal pressure within 30 min. Provide pump with supports, safety valve, gauge, starter and connections to wet pipe sprinkler system. Set safety valve 10 psi above operating pressure. Pump to be 110 volt, single phase. Acceptable Material: Albany. PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.1 Installation.1 Install horizontal valve with stems upright where space allows..2 Arrange drains so that they can be fully opened without flooding..3 Sprinkler mains to be installed within 12" of underside of steel joists, and all branch piping shall be in joist space..4 Piping shall run parallel to building grid lines..5 Mechanical contractor to isolate sprinkler system as required to perform work. Notify owner in advance of all shutdowns and follow owners procedures regarding draining and re-filling of system. Mechanical contractor to include all costs for de-activation and reactivation of fire alarm system as required to perform work. Fire alarm system shutdowns to coincide with sprinkler shutdowns. 3.2 Testing.1 Test systems in accordance with NFPA 13 and authorities having jurisdiction. 3.3 Protection of Completed Work.1 Provide red wire guards for sprinkler heads in elevator machine rooms, mechanical rooms, electrical rooms, Janitor s room, and in other areas subject to damage.

City of Ottawa Project No. CR006230 Page 8 of 8 3.4 Site Visit.1 The Engineer providing the certified design for the sprinkler layout drawings and calculations shall visit the site, as required, to provide a letter at the end of construction, indicating the installation is in accordance with the certified shop drawing submission and Ontario Building Code. The letter shall be stamped and signed with the Professional Engineer s seal, licensed in the Province of Ontario. END OF SECTION
