2 Description and Uses The Lightnin Classic Direct-Drive Mixer (Model XD-30VM) has a 1/3 hp motor with a maximum speed of 1,725 rpm. It provides high-fluid shear for small batch mixing. Features of the mixer include a onepiece aluminum housing, a positive chuck, and a built-in dampener pad between the housing ball and clamp socket to minimize vibration. Dimensions: 17.5"L x 10"W x 11"H Impeller: 0.5" diameter Potential Hazards and Safety Precautions See Safety Check List on pages 7-8. Electric Shock/Standard Voltage (115V) Make certain to use the correct outlet that is specifically designed to fit the electrical cord plug. Make sure that the wall outlet receptacle is properly wired and grounded, and matches the mixer s power cord and plug. Do not touch the mixer or power cord if hands or feet are wet, or if standing on a wet/damp surface, as severe electrical shock or death may result. Rotating Pinch Points/Possible Entanglement of Extremities, Hair, Jewelry or Clothing Be sure to keep hands away from the impeller and impeller shaft while the mixer is operating or even plugged in to an electrical outlet, as serious personal injury can result. Make sure to secure long hair and any loose clothing or jewelry before operating the mill. Never attempt to clean, move or adjust mixer while it is running or while it is connected to a power source. Excessive Weight/Possible Damage to Hands/Fingers when Moving or Repositioning The mixer is heavy. If it needs to be moved or re-positioned, it is advisable to have a second person available to provide assistance and minimize the risk of injury or damage if the mixer is accidentally dropped. 2

3 Flying Debris/Potential Eye Damage Wear safety goggles while mixer is in operation to prevent material being splashed onto the operator. Combustibility and Explosion/Possible Physical Damage or Injury Do not use the mixer with materials capable of developing flammable or explosive vapors. Possible Biohazard Never use the mixer to stir liquids containing pathogenic microbes, toxic chemicals or otherwise hazardous material. 4 Operation 1. The Instruction Manual provides a more complete description of the mixer. Be sure to read the manual before operating the mixer to become familiar with its correct operation and individual component parts. See Section 3: Installation & Operation on page The mixer is attached to the framework of a wheeled dolly that can be moved as needed. Vessels containing liquids, slurries, etc. to be mixed can be placed on the dolly s holding platform beneath the mixer. Note that the mixer is heavy. If necessary, request assistance in handling and positioning the mixer to prevent personal injury that can result if the mixer is dropped. 3. The mounting clamp is adjustable from 0-10º in the vertical plane. Make sure the mixer is properly located relative to tank centerlines and angular requirements or offsets shown in the instruction manual. Note that aiming the shaft off-center prevents vortexing and eliminates the need for tank baffles and achieves strong top-to-bottom turnover. 4. Fill the mixing vessel so that the liquid level is at least two impeller diameters above the lower impeller. 5. IMPORTANT! Before applying AC power to the operator s control station, be sure the speed control dial is in the OFF position. Switching on the AC line with the speed control dial in the on position can cause control failure. 6. Plug the power cord into a correct power source. 7. Turn the speed control dial clockwise to the desired speed. The lighted switch indicates power is on. To select a new speed, adjust the speed control dial. 8. To stop the drive, turn the rocker switch off. Leaving the control dial on without the motor shaft turning will cause motor damage. 9. The mixer has a 5-amp external and a 10-amp internal fuse to protect the board components. If the unit does not operate, check the fuses and replace them if necessary. Operating Precautions 1. Do not operate the mixer under the following adverse conditions: a. Open outdoor service without protection from rain or snow; b. Ambient temperatures over 100ºF; c. Hot, humid atmospheres such as steam vapors. 2. Be sure to report all problems to the pilot plant manager. 4

5 Clean-up Procedures Please note that these clean-up procedures are for non-transgenic grains only. Transgenic material has a separate, more thorough clean-up procedure. For more information, see special standard operating procedures for the handling of transgenic material. 1. To clean, be sure the mixer is unplugged and locked out! 2. Drain the contents of the mixing tank. Clean the tank with warm soapy water. Then, rinse with warm tap water, followed by distilled water. 3. Clean the impeller and the impeller shaft with warm soapy water. Then, rinse with warm tap water, followed by distilled water. If necessary, remove the impeller and the impeller shaft from the mixer by following the directions in the Instruction Manual. 4. When the impeller and the impeller shaft are clean and dry, re-install them on the mixer. 5. Sweep up and discard all debris into the appropriate place for disposal. 6. Once the mixer and area is clean, have the mixer inspected by the pilot plant manager and initiate check-out procedures. Machine Care and Maintenance Mixer must be properly cleaned and inspected after each use. All inspections are performed by the pilot plant manager. Motors and moving parts should be properly lubricated on a regular basis by the pilot plant manager or a trained service technician. Accessories None 5
