HAZARDOUS SAFETY SYMBOLS Safety Symbols: have been developed to warn users of the hazards associated with different products. TWO TYPES of Safety Symbols 1) HHPS 2) WHMIS Hazardous Household Workplace Hazardous Product Symbol Materials Information System Found on household Found on workplace products mostly products mostly cleaners. cleaners.
HAZARDOUS HOUSEHOLD PRODUCT SYMBOLS There are 12 HHPS representing different types and levels of hazard. FOUR TYPES: There are 4 different types of hazards. poisonous explosive corrosive flammable THREE LEVELS: There are 3 levels of hazards, each more harmful than the previous. more harmful color # of sides caution warning danger yellow orange red 3 sides 4 sides 8 sides
HAZARDOUS HOUSEHOLD PRODUCT SYMBOLS Combining the type and level of hazard creates a HHPS. caution poison warning poison danger poison warning corrosive danger explosive caution flammable
HAZARDOUS HOUSEHOLD PRODUCT SYMBOLS danger poisonous caution explosive warning poisonous danger flammable caution corrosive warning explosive danger explosive caution poisonous caution flammable danger corrosive warning flammable warning corrosive
WORKPLACE HAZARDOUS MATERIALS INFORMATION SYSTEMS SYMBOLS There are 8 WHMIS symbols. Each WHMIS symbol has a circle for its border. flammable dangerously reactive corrosive compressed gas oxidizing agent biohazardous and infectious poisonous: immediate & toxic effects poisonous: other effects
LAB SAFETY AND CONDUCT Personal Behavior and Attire Chemical Use LAB CONDUCT AND SAFETY Proper sequipment Use Clean Up Injuries
PERSONAL BEHAVIOR AND ATTIRE Protects your eyes from unexpected splatters and shatters. Goggles worn at all times. Ouch! Never wear contacts during a lab. Chemicals can get trapped between the lens and your eye. No open-toed shoes allowed in the lab.
PERSONAL BEHAVIOR AND ATTIRE Long hair needs to be tied back. Loose clothes need to be secured and out of the way. No fooling around during the lab!
PERSONAL BEHAVIOR AND ATTIRE Do not put your hands in your eyes or mouth during the lab. YUCK! No eating or drinking in the lab.
PROPER EQUIPMENT USE Do not place equipment at the edge of the lab bench. Move all chairs to the back of the room away from the benches before the lab starts. Students must stand during a lab. Keep your work area. tidy Move bags and books to the wall.
PROPER EQUIPMENT USE Broken equipment must be reported to the. teacher Don t just put it back! Broken glass must be reported to the teacher and placed in the proper container. Unplug the hotplate when not in use to prevent burns and to let it cool down before storing.
CHEMICAL USE Inform your teacher of any chemical spills before cleaning. Know the hazards in the lab before starting your experiment. Do not pour any chemicals down the. sink
CHEMICAL USE Do not taste any of the chemicals. Smell a chemical using the hand-waving or wafting method. Greedy Smurf Take only the amount of chemicals that you need. Share don t be! greedy Less chemicals used means less harm to the environment.
CHEMICAL USE When mixing chemicals, always add the water. first This prevents the chemical from splashing. In some cases, the large volume of water absorbs heat that may be generated when the two substances combine. Be careful not to cross-contaminate your chemicals.
INJURIES If something enters your eye, have a partner direct you to the eye. wash station Position face above the station with eyes open for 10 minutes. Immediately inform your teacher and place injury under running water for 5-10 minutes. Immediately inform your teacher, clean the cut and put a bandage on it.
CLEANUP All equipment needs to be properly washed, rinsed and put in the drying. rack/area Put back all equipment to where you originally got it, if you do not have to wash it (e.g. microscopes and hotplates). Put goggles back neatly into the. storage area
CLEANUP Spray then wipe down lab bench with paper towel. Do not put paper towel in the recycling; it goes in the garbage. Wash your hands at the end of the lab.
IDENTIFY THE BROKEN LAB SAFETY RULES Donna Jacob Nico Vincent Suying Patrick Ted Minh Can you find at least 13 broken safety rules? Hakim Mohammed Samira Toby lab safety video Claire
