At that stage, sales totalled approximately R1 million. After a number of Samsung staff moved across to join the company in 2002, sales increased rapidly to approximately R50 million. Today, one and a half decades later, Fourways Airconditioning has grown to a massive nationwide operation with a yearly turnover of well over half a billion rands on Samsung alone. 4 Heat Pumps Our Alliance Heat Pump range includes a SANS 151-approved 170-litre Combo unit with combined storage tank that fully complies with XA2 Energy Usage Regulations making it extremely popular with developers. Alliance s domestic retrofitted range features an external water heater utilising an existing geyser as a storage tank. 3 different models heat from 100 up to 500 litres of water to 60 C, using only one THIRD - or even less - of the electricity previously used by an electric-element geyser. The Alliance Commercial Heat Pump range also saves up to two-thirds or more on water heating costs, and is ideal for hotels, guesthouses, B&B s, universities, factories and offices. A range of 3 Direct Heating Commercial Heat Pumps, 10kW, 42kW and 80kW, heat water day or night, rain or shine. Modularity allows multiple units to be linked, increasing hot water output. 5 Aircon projects supplied by Fourways Airconditioning DVM S unit offers multiple benefits to Nelson Mandela Children s Hospital Building the most advanced Children s Hospital in Africa required state-of-the-art airconditioning. Spoormaker & Partners, consulting engineers specialising in airconditioning systems for large projects, selected Samsung s DVM S system. Airgro (Pty) Ltd was the company chosen to carry out the installation. A prime benefit of the system is its top class energy efficiency coupled with Samsung s Heat Recovery system, ensuring maximum savings on electricity. An additional benefit is that the DVM S outdoor unit is directly connected to a thirdparty AHU (Air Handling Unit), used to provide surgically clean air for theatres, while the use of Hydro units generates hot water for the various hospital blocks using the refrigerant system. The result is a fully-integrated energy efficient system. #Temperaturesmustfall installation at Pretoria University Groenkloof Campus Pretoria can get pretty hot and as there was no existing airconditioning in the Groenkloof Campus library and auditoriums, aircon tenders were called for. The consultant specified Samsung DVM S systems as the main outdoor units in view of their eco-friendliness and high energy efficiency, and HVAC contractor Airfreeze (Pty) Ltd was given the job. A total of 17 Samsung outdoor units were installed including 7 DVM S systems on the roof, utilising Samsung s Heat Recovery system for maximum energy savings. Indoor units comprised 23 one-way cassettes of various capacities, 33 four-way cassettes and 28 ducted units. Work began in July and was completed by November that year, resulting in economical, efficient climate control for the auditorium and library.

6 Alliance ensures a cool congregation The Assemblies of God church in Bloemfontein needed cooling of their congregational area, and Midrand Airconditioning and Ventilation were selected for the project. Wanting maximum value for money, they chose three Btu/h Alliance Ducted Inverter units as well as twenty Btu/h non-inverter ducted units. Installation took place in March/April, ensuring that the church was perfectly prepared for the heatwaves that were to follow at the end of summer. Keeping hotel guests cool and warm at the Kimberley Ann Hotel Before construction on the Kimberley Ann Hotel began, the owner wished to ensure cooling and heating of the highest efficiency. Turbo Cool Air Conditioning, the HVAC contractors, recommended Samsung s DVM with Heat Recovery system. Today, the Kimberley Ann Hotel boasts 4 Samsung DVM 3 outdoor units, with 21 indoor midwall Splits, 20 Cassettes and an S-Net Mini controller that provides individual climate control for each area of the hotel. Guests are thus assured of total comfort, winter or summer, while the owner of the hotel enjoys maximum energy savings.

7 Birthed in comfort! Specifying HVAC for a maternity hospital obviously carries strict requirements. Air quality is of prime importance as is individual temperature control of various areas. Cost-effectiveness and energy-efficiency are also at the forefront of requirements. For a new 4-floor maternity wing at Lakeview Hospital in Boksburg, another prerequisite was that there were to be no outdoor condensers spoiling the aesthetics of the building. Samsung s DVM S was the system specified by Green Planet Engineering Services, to fully comply with the above requirements. Fourways worked closely with Curries Airconditioning who installed the system. A total of 7 outdoor DVM S units were located out of sight on the roof; total cooling capacity being 292kW (cooling) and 328.8kW (heating). A central Touch Controller was used for overall management by the Head Matron. 67 indoor units, mainly mini 4-way cassettes and slim ducts with HEPA filters, ensured maximum air cleanliness and precise localised temperature control. Umhlanga College beats the North Coast s heat and humidity Umhlanga College specifically mentioned energy efficiency as a prime requirement for the climate control if their High School. Homeaire Airconditioning got the job in December 2015 and the job was completed by the end of January 2016 just in time for the North Coast s heat and humidity. A Samsung AM120 and AM180 DVM S outdoors were used coupled with a total of 8 high-capacity indoor units to provide the necessary cooling.

8 Touchstone House a massive 14-storey installation This was Fourways Cape s first project with Cape Town s largest consulting engineering company, Aurecon. 14 floors of apartments required airconditioning, as well as commercial space on the ground floor. In total, 119 med. static indoor ducted units were required along with 20 cassette units for public areas and penthouse. These were linked to 2 Samsung DVM S units: an HR 1100kW and a HP 200kW. As space was limited, bulkheads were also used as return air space. CMH Holdings ensure their cars and staff stay cool and comfortable When CMH Holdings were planning their brand new Datcentre building, maximum efficiency allied with cost-savings were high on their list for an airconditioning system. Homeaire Airconditioning s proposal was chosen and 6 Samsung DVM S systems were used to link with 46 indoor units, providing a total of Btu/h.

9 Keeping Fruit and Veg City Brackenfell as cool as a cucumber! A joint venture involving different contractors is never easy, especially when there are several layout changes before completion. 3 floors of climate control were required, as was maximum energy efficiency along with heat recovery and fresh air treatment. Coastal Airconditioning Services and Embassy Airconditioning did a joint installation involving 3 Samsung DVM S systems one for each floor supplying nearly 100 indoor units. Working in conjunction with Fourways Cape, the project was satisfactorily completed. Hirschs Umhlanga use their expertise to select the best in aircon systems When Hirschs decided to replace their outdated and problematic airconditioning system at their Umhlanga store, being the longestablished experts in the field that they are, they selected Samsung DVM S units for the job. Their own technicians installed 3 separate DVM systems, each delivering Btu/h, providing a total of Btu/h of energy-efficient cooling. Old Town Italy The specification was Energy Efficiency on a Budget for this building. Bloc Architects liaised with Homeaire Airconditioning to come up with the ideal solution: 8 x Samsung CSU2-60HDIN units, providing a total of Btu/h. Tracey Jelf from Fourways KZN ensured that liaison in terms of supply remained smooth throughout.

10 545kW keeps customers happy at Mayborn retail development centre With a humid subtropical temperature that can reach as much as 40 in summer, business centres in Nelspruit (also known as Mbombela) need efficient airconditioning. When an investment company decided to build a new retail development centre with extensive glass frontage, they called on the expertise of Nelspruit Airconditioning. Keen pricing was a must, and Alliance airconditioners were the perfect answer. Nelspruit Airconditioning installed 12 MAC-150 HDINX outdoor units on the roof, linked to 12 MAC-150HDIN ducted indoors. Total heating/cooling capacity of the installation was 545kW resulting in perfect climate control for the new centre, both winter and summer. V&A Waterfront airconditioning updated Tasked with replacing existing rusted equipment with Samsung units, Fourways Cape were selected as suppliers by Spoormaker and Partners at 5 different projects on the famous V&A site, including at Standard Bank, Tour de Brasserie and Lusitania offices in the harbour. Samsung DVM S heat-recovery units were used in this ongoing project, with a total of 1400kW heating/cooling capacity initially installed. Crewkern Working with developers Jacoby Nichol Construction and Sagnelli Architects, a leading architectural practice in KZN, Homeaire Airconditioning again delivered the goods for this residential development Btu/h was required to aircondition each of the two floors of the building, providing perfect climate control of KZN s notorious humidity.

11 Virgin Active Ballito makes workouts a pleasure A gym on the KZN North Coast obviously requires a lot of cooling! Contractors CS Airconditioning Services thus specified 8 Samsung DVM S units providing a total of 170hp for the Virgin Active gym in Ballito. These were used in conjunction with Trox air handlers to provide the ideal ducted cooling solution. The Department of Education, Braamfontein, steps up to energy-efficient climate control When the old chilled water system in the Department of Education building in Braamfontein started showing its age, Right Air received the contract to install Samsung DVM units with heat recovery. A total of 20 outdoor DVM S units were installed on the roof, supplying 742kW of indoor capacity via 88 Samsung 4-way Cassettes. This will also allow flexibility for future tenants of the building if the Department relocates in future. Pietermaritzburg Supreme & High Courts When it comes to the climate control of an institution like the Supreme Court, one has to keep to the letter of the law! Contractors Blomeyers Heating and Cooling did just that in this installation which utilised 4 x MCU kits for effective heat recovery. A total of Btu/h ensures that the temperature stays on an even keel in these legal chambers, summer or winter.

12 Alliance value gets the nod in Richards Bay! Working to a tight budget, Tangawizi Motors in Richards Bay rejected the first two quotes they received for the airconditioning of their new premises. Then Exland Airconditioning, working closely with Fourways KZN, put in a quote using Alliance cassettes, midwalls and ducteds and got the job. All in all, 9 Alliance Ducteds, from to Btu/h, 9 Cassettes from to Btu/h and 10 Midwalls from 9000 to Btu/h were used to ensure highly efficient and cost-competitive climate control for the entire premises. Top-class airconditioning for a top-class hotel Vulintaba Country Hotel, part of lifestyle development Vulintaba Country Estate, is a top-class establishment near Newcastle with 69 rooms, as well as conference facilities catering for up to 400 people plus a wedding chapel with 120 seats. Guest comfort was a prime requirement, and Air Cat of Newcastle were called in to do the airconditioning installation. Junaid Razack of Fourways KZN says 2 DVM S units for the lower ground floor were coupled to 16 4-way Samsung Cassettes. Climate control of the ground floor called for two AM120 DVM S outdoor units feeding 5 Samsung 4-way Cassettes plus two Btu Alliance Underceiling units. One AM100 DVM S outdoor unit linked to four Samsung 4-way Cassettes took care of the first floor, while for the chapel, one AM100 DVM S outdoor was linked to 4-way Cassettes. Each of the 69 rooms had its own Samsung Inverter Compact cassette with separate outdoor units. All the different systems were installed by Air Cat, who did a great job.

13 Heat Pump projects supplied by Fourways Airconditioning Getting students into hot water! To enable students to live in town near the University of Johannesburg, old grain silos in Newtown have been converted into dwellings. Hot water was being supplied by an older system consisting of 3 x 3000-litre hot water storage tanks heated by a circulation type heat pump. However, during the winter of 2015 this could not keep up with hot water demand. Elemental Energy were called in and after careful calculation and measurements, recommended a direct heating 80kW Alliance Heat Pump the first one to be installed in South Africa. The main problem with the hot water supply was a peak demand time of around 3 hours when water temperature dropped. But because of the direct heating-type operation of the Alliance Commercial Heat Pump, it immediately supplements the supply by at least 1000 litres of instant hot water per hour during peak draw time, even during worst-case winter ambient temperatures. Problem solved! Sweating to solve a complex problem The owners of a new gym at Sancardia Mall Pretoria were sweating even before the gym opened. Reason: the 2400 litre boiler they had ordered to supply hot water for the change rooms could not be manufactured before the opening in a month s time. The project, carried out by Air Cycle, called in the expertise of Fourways Airconditioning who came up with the answer. 200-litre geysers were readily available, so 6 were positioned for the men s change room and 6 for the ladies one, making a combined 2400 litres of water storage. However, the cumulative electricity usage of all 12 in operation would have worked out extremely expensive so two 10kW Alliance Commercial Heat Pump Water heaters were installed. With a COP of 4.1, these Alliance Water Heaters have cut potential electricity usage down by approximately 75% as compared with the amount the electric element geysers would have used.

14 1000 litres/hr for Birchwood Hotel The system installed at Birchwood Hotel comprises 10 x 38kw Alliance Heat Pumps connected to 4000-litre boilers. Installed by Magnet Group, based in Durban, the Alliance Heat Pumps can produce 1000 litres of hot water per hour. A ring main system supplies instant hot water to taps/showers litres of hot water at Midrand Sun One Hotel Requirements for this 94-room hotel were that the system could re-heat 5000 litres of existing storage within a period of 6 hours during winter. 3 x 38.5kW Alliance Heat Pumps were installed by Solar Heat Exchangers, providing a hot-water volume of 7500 litres, and drastically cutting electricity usage. Energy-saving focus helps ensure success of new development A Renico project, Ponders End 186-unit complex is situated in Helderkruin, with one of its big attractions being an emphasis on energy saving. Renico installed 186 Alliance Heat Pump Water Heaters, supplied by Fourways. With a COP of 3.7, the Heat Pumps reduce water-heating costs by two-thirds or more resulting in substantial electricity-savings for owners.

15 Radisson Blu Park Hotel, Polokwane gets energy-efficient L system The brief was to design and install a L hot water system for this new hotel. The design was done by WSP and installed by Solsquare: 2 x steel storage vessels with electrical back-up, heated by 5 x 42 kw Alliance Heat pumps. The project was completed in Hollywood apartments, Gauteng keeps water-heating costs low The requirement was to install a Heat Accumulator system, heated by Heat Pumps in this residential building. Solsquare installed a Indirect Heat Accumulator storage vessel, with 3 x 42kW Alliance Heat Pumps plus an in-line heater as backup, successfully meeting tenant s requirements. The Atrium, Gauteng cuts potential water-heating costs by two-thirds A new residential building required L of hot water to be supplied to its apartments. The solution was to install 3 x 6 000L steel storage vessels with 5 x 42kW Alliance Heat Pumps plus electrical backup. This project was carried out by Solsquare.

16 Google Head Office chooses the best! Ever-conscious of energy conservation, Google s requirement for their new Head Office in Gauteng was a highly-efficient water heating system. The answer, installed by Solsquare, was a 1000L storage vessel heated by an Alliance 20kW Heat Pump, ensuring hot water supplied at one third of the cost of electrical-element heating. Ensuring economical hot water for eight 4-storey blocks? Elemental! When Elemental Energy tendered for the supply of an energy-efficient water heating system for The Village, a new multi-storey development in Centurion, their recommendation was Alliance Direct Heating Heat Pumps. Actually, we ve used Alliance Heat Pumps for about 5 years now, remarks Bruce Thomas, MD of Elemental Energy. We ve always liked their product quality, along with the excellent back-up service provided by Fourways Airconditioning. A 4500-litre tank mounted on the roof of each of the 8 blocks was used, with a ring main system to ensure virtually instant hot water to each of the units in the apartment blocks. Because Alliance Commercial Heat Pumps are direct heating, water temperature at the outlet of each Heat Pump remains consistently high - 50 C to 60 C depending on setting no matter how heavy the water draw-off. An 80kW Alliance Commercial Heat Pump was connected to each insulated tank, with a separate pump taking care of the recirculating ring main system.
