1 SESSION TITLE: PROPER HANDWASHING Date: Time: Facilitator(s): Learning Objectives: 1. Why it is important to wash hands 2. How to wash hands correctly Facilitator Preparation: Materials: Equipment: Handouts: Critical Hand Washing Moments poster (Appendix 3), Hand Washing Steps poster (Appendix 4) Trainer Materials: Poster board, markers (black and yellow), Routes of Contamination poster (Appendix 1), hand washing steps, tape, paint, bucket/sink, running water/pitcher filled with clean water, soap. Step / Time / Facilitator Motivation 5 minutes Instructional Sequence -Before the presentation, draw a giant hand on a poster board. On the hand, put yellow dots to represent the germs (Appendix 1). -Standing far away from the participants ask: Is my hand clean or dirty (should stand far enough away they cannot see the yellow dots) -Standing closer to the participants ask the question again (should stand close enough they can see the yellow dots) -Explain that the dots are like germs, they are hard to see but are there, and that is why we need to wash our hands Materials -Poster board -Markers (black and yellow) Information 20 minutes -Ask who remembers the routes of contamination? (Present the routes of contamination poster) -Ask how the routes of contamination are related to hand washing? If you do not wash your hands properly you could contaminate your food or water and get sick. -Ask what are the critical hand washing moments -Routes of Contamination poster (Appendix 2) -Critical Hand Washing Moment poster (Appendix 3) -Hand washing steps (Appendix4) -Tape MIPAE: Proper Hand Washing Page 1 of 18
2 Practice 20 minutes Application 20 minutes -Explain the critical moments using the Critical Hand- Washing Moments poster (Appendix 2), this is to be given to each participating household Before eating, before preparing food, after going to the bathroom, after touching animals, after changing diapers, after playing, after work, etc. -Ask what is needed to wash hands Running water, soap, clean towel. -Explain if they do not have running water, they should pour the water over their hands. Never put their hands directly into the water recipient, this will dirty the water. -Explain if there is no clean towel, they can shake their hands in the air to dry them. -Ask what are the critical steps to hand washing -Using the hand washing steps from Appendix 4, explain and demonstrate each hand washing step. Practice with the group. -Distribute the hand washing steps amongst the group and have them put them in the correct order -Ask what materials are needed to correctly wash their hands -Ask for 5 volunteers (mix of adults and kids) -Put paint on the hands of the 5 volunteers -Explain the paint represents germs -The 5 volunteers then go around the classroom and shake hands with the other volunteers, spreading the germs -Once everyone has germs, they will practice washing their hands at the hand washing station, using the proper steps -Hand washing steps (Appendix 4) -Tape -Paint -Running water (can be a faucet or a pitcher filled with water) -Bucket/sink -Soap MIPAE: Proper Hand Washing Page 2 of 18
3 Evaluation 5 minutes -Review the hand washing steps with the group by asking them to demonstrate how they wash their hands. -What are the critical hand washing moments?
