1 INSTRUCTION & MAINTENANCE MANUAL BEFORE USING THE SWIVEL JOINT, PLEASE READ THIS MANUAL THOROUGHLY AND RETAIN IT FOR FUTURE REFERENCE. [Pearl is a brand name of SHOW GIKEN INDUSTRIAL CO., LTD.] 1

PRECAUTIONS FOR HANDLING 1) As the swivel joint is tested before shipment for ready to use, on-site readjustment is not necessary. 2) Store the swivel joint in clean and stable condition until you install it. 3) Avoid impacting on the swivel joint or using it as steps. 2. PRECAUTIONS FOR INSTALLATION 1) Standard material of packing is NBR (Buna-N), which cannot be used for fluids such as phosphoric ester-type hydraulic operating oil, chlorinated hydrocarbontype operating oil, organic solvent or acid. The swivel joint can be used only for the applications and service conditions shown in the catalog of SGK. Do not use the swivel joint with flammable fluids, fluids which have a risk of explosion or fire, and corrosive fluids. Contact SGK If you want to use it for other applications or other conditions. 2) The swivel joint is equipped with two ball bearings. So there is no backlash between the shaft and the body. The movement of the shaft is limited in its rotational direction only. Consider the movement of the pipeline carefully before selecting style. 3) Lifetime of the swivel joint heavily depends on the degree of moment load. Avoid such pipework where the swivel joint receives large moment load. 4) Unlike a rotary joint, the swivel joint does not suit for continuous revolution. However it can be used at very low rotation speed. 5) Use Teflon tape for sealing tapered thread. For flange type put a gasket between two flanges and tighten bolts equally. 6) Flush the pipeline before installation of the swivel joint. In case that fluid contains any foreign objects, install a proper strainer. HOW TO USE SWIVEL JOINTS 2

3 PRECAUTION FOR WELDING 1) Basically carry out welding operation after disassembling the swivel joint in order to avoid heat impact on the seal parts and deterioration of grease by heat. 2) To prevent thermal deformation of the ball bearings, wrap the object in a cloth with water to avoid raise in temperature of the ball races over 100 degrees Celsius. 3) During welding operation, be careful not to damage finished surfaces. Cover such surfaces so that welding spatter does not adhere to them. 4) Clean the body and the shaft after welding operation. Then put them together. STRUCTURE OF PEARL SWIVEL JOINT 3. MAINTENANCE The ball bearings and the seals need to be lubricated with grease to maintain ability of Pearl Swivel Joint. For service at normal temperature, regular lubrication is not necessary. When replacing the seals, lubrication is necessary. Feed grease from the Grease Nipple after detaching the Plug. *The grease fed in the factory is [Shell Alvania S1]. Leakage is raised by abrasion of O-ring or by property change due to aging. Replace it with new one when you find leakage Disassembly 1) Detach the Cap Screws (10) with the Spring Washers (15). Then detach the Cover (3) from the Body (2). Bend a tooth and detach the Nut (8). 2) Hold the Body (2) in a vice and take out the Shaft (1) with the Ball Bearing (5). Take out the Ball Bearing (4) from the Body (2). 3

4 3-2. Checkout Clean the disassembled parts and check whether they are attrite or damaged. Especially seal surfaces of the Shaft and the Body need to be checked carefully Part Replacement and Repair When replacing unrepairable or un-reusable parts with new ones, use genuine parts of our company. Contact SGK with the information on the type and the size of Pearl Swivel Joint as well as the name of the fluid. The O-rings (6) (7) and the Backup Rings (14) need to be replaced with new ones Assembly 1) Apply grease to the O-rings (6), the Backup Rings (13) and the grooves of the Body (2). Then attach them to the grooves. 2) Apply grease to the O-ring (7) and the groove of the Shaft (1). Then attach it to the groove. 3) Insert the Shaft (1) with the Ball Bearing (5) into the Body (2). 4) Attach the Washer (14) and the Nut (8) to the Shaft (1). 5) Attach the Cover (3) with the Cap Screws (10) and the Spring Washers (13). 6) Make sure that the Shaft (1) rotates correctly. 7) Feed grease from the Grease Nipple (11). 4. OPERATING PRECAUTIONS 1) When leakage occurs, close the valves immediately to stop supplying fluid to the swivel joint and halt the operation of the machine. 2) Before detaching the swivel joint from the machine, make sure that the fluid pressure in the swivel joint is 0 and the temperature is room one. 4
