NORTHERN STAR MANUAL 8 Rev: Feb. 16, 2004

Visually check racor fuel filters for debris or water in globe (blow down through bottom valve in necessary). 2. Navigation switch positions: Lower left switch panel, all switches on: VHF, Garmin 2010C, Radar (lower left switch on radar unit turns it on) B. STARTING THE ENGINE 1. Engine only needs 5 minutes of warm-up longer is not necessary. 2. Battery switch (starboard side stairs to pilothouse) should always be in BOTH position. NORTHERN STAR MANUAL 9 Rev: Feb. 16, 2004

Battery Switch Engine Controls Make sure You re in Neutral before starting the engine! (Straight up) Throttle at idle before starting (back all the way) NORTHERN STAR MANUAL 10 Rev: Feb. 16, 2004

Never use the key to shut down the engine, use the Silver Stop button first, then turn the key! 3. Shifting lever (port, black handle) in NEUTRAL (Straight up). 4. Pull throttle (starboard, red handle) back all the way, then forward aprox. 10% 5. Turn ignition key clockwise to the on position. Engine bells will sound. 6. Push START button and hold until engine fully engages, or no more than a slow 4 second count. POST-START 1. When engine starts, adjust throttle (starboard, red handle) up to 900 RPM for warm-up. Reminder: 5 minutes of warm-up is sufficient. NORTHERN STAR MANUAL 11 Rev: Feb. 16, 2004

2. Oil pressure/temperature alarm buzzer will stop sounding after correct oil pressure reaches operation range. 3. Check engine gauges, oil pressures, voltmeter and water temperature gauges-typicals: a. Oil pressure psi b. Temperature F c. Voltage v 4. Look over transom to ensure cooling water is exhausting on port side. 5. Do not run engine over RPMs while in neutral. 6. Let engine warm to operation temperature of 180 degrees, (10 to 15 minutes of running) before pushing to beyond 1200 RPMs. 7. IMPORTANT: Bring throttle to idle position (fully toward stern) before moving the shift lever. When changing from forward to reverse or vice versa, always allow a brief moment in neutral in order for the propeller to shift directions. Failure do follow these guidelines can cause extensive transmission damage! ENGINE SHUTDOWN 8. Never use the ignition key to shut down a diesel!! This will cause the alternator diodes to burn out. 9. While at idle, press and hold silver engine stop button until engine comes to a complete stop. Engine bells will sound. This is normal (indicates low oil pressure). 10. Then and only then is it safe to turn the ignition key to off position. E. GENERATOR START NORTHERN STAR MANUAL 12 Rev: Feb. 16, 2004

PRE-START 1. To check oil level. Remove white, round panel on forward side. 2. To check generator coolant level (only when engine is cold); add antifreeze if necessary. 3. Raw water seacock valve (port side of generator set) should always be in the open position (handle upright) - seacock should be in line with the hose to be open. 4. Be sure raw water strainer is free of debris. If you need to clean it, close raw water valve (horizontal position), remove wing nuts on sea strainer, open and remove filter and clean. Return filter into the unit, otherwise the cap will not close tightly. Then RE-OPEN SEACOCK and proceed. 5. Turn silver Source Selector switch top right Generator. 6. Make sure all 12 volt switches are in the off position (do not start the generator with a load) 7. Hold the generator preheat (left side) toggle switch to ON (down position) for 20 seconds. START 1. Push the preheat toggle up an dhold for 15 seconds. While still holding the preheat switch on, push engine control toggle to start (right). 2. As soon as the generator gets up to speed, release the preheat toggle switch, then release the start toggle switch. POST-START 1. Check oil pressure and voltage indication on the center panel. 2. Glancing at the oil pressure and volt meter gauges will assist you in knowing the generator has started. 3. Do not run generator without a load. Make sure an appliance or some electrical load is on after starting generator (TV or heater, etc.). It is designed to operate only under a load. NORTHERN STAR MANUAL 13 Rev: Feb. 16, 2004

4. Do not run for more than 8 consecutive hours. F. GENERATOR SHUTDOWN 1. Remove the load from the generator. I generally bring the load up and down slowly, adding appliances one at a time. 2. Turn the source switch to off or shore power. 3. To stop generator, simply push the rocker switch on the control switch to the Stop position (left). NORTHERN STAR MANUAL 14 Rev: Feb. 16, 2004

III. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM The main panel is located in the pilot house, starboard side behind two swing-out clear plexiglass doors. The left 3 rows of the panel are the DC side. The far right row is the AC side. Two secondary panels are below the wheel. The left hand panel is for navigation. The right hand panel is for house 110 V circuits supported by the inverter. Secondary Panels: Instrument Breakers 12 V Port Panel 110 V Outlet Inverter Breakers Starboard Panel All Switches On when running All Switches Can be Left On A. DC SYSTEM 12 volts This system powers all lights, pumps electronics, anchor winch, engine starters and 12 volt refrigerator/freezer. 1. Batteries should be recharged every other day, either by running the main engine for at least 1 hour, by being connected to shore power or running the generator. For shore power, turn on thec AC circuit breaker in the column of switches on the main panel second from the right. Also turn on the breaker marked battery charger and Inverter. 3. Northern Star is equipped with 2 house banks of 700 AH each. Be conservative with DC power usage. Remember you have to put back what you use. The Engine start batteries are isolated and will n ot discharge accidentally. A separate battery starts the generator, so you should never be caught in a position where you can t recharge the house banks. NORTHERN STAR MANUAL 15 Rev: Feb. 16, 2004

Port Side of Main Panel DC Switches Leave ON Use As Needed Always OFF NORTHERN STAR MANUAL 16 Rev: Feb. 16, 2004

Center of Main Panel for DC Switches Always to be Left On Emergency Use Only Not in use Leave On Use As Needed For Shore or Generator Power Turn Off Before Disconnecting from Shore Power! Always OFF NORTHERN STAR MANUAL 17 Rev: Feb. 16, 2004

For AC or Washer For Air Conditioners Only B. AC SYSTEM 120 volts 1. AC power is available when connected to shore power or while running the AC Generator. The AC source selector (silver top right) switch should be left in the off position. The AC Main Breaker switch (yellow) should be left on. The inverter will sense if you have shore power plugged in and route the power accordingly. If you are on batteries, the inverter light switch will come on (left light on the inverter panel by the pilothouse steps). NORTHERN STAR MANUAL 18 Rev: Feb. 16, 2004

2. The invertor switch on the main panel (behind glass doors) should always be left on. The shore power cord is located outside the starboard pilothouse door in the deck locker. C. INVERTER There is an Outback 2800 Watt inverter/battery charger on board. If you need AC while underway or at anchor, the inverter does the job automatically, no switches or buttons to push! Note: Make sure power cord is disconnected from dock before departing. When on shore power, the system automatically limits the draw the boat will take to 28 amps. If you try to run more than 28 amps, the invertor will take over and start assuming the excess amperage load. This will happen automatically. The only evidence will be the green indicator light on the right side of the invertor control panel. The invertor will switch loads back to shore power automatically when the load drops back below the 28 amp limit. NORTHERN STAR MANUAL 19 Rev: Feb. 16, 2004

D. AC AMP METER & BATTERY MONITOR 1 The Inverter panel has a digital meter that indicates the draw of charge rate, as well as battery condition. 2. Always turn the AC selector switch behind the glass doors to the OFF position when disconnecting the shore power cords or switching from shore to ship (generator) and vice versa. NORTHERN STAR MANUAL 20 Rev: Feb. 16, 2004

IV. INSTRUMENTS DEPTH SOUNDERS (2) 1. Autohelm Combination Depth/speed log (uses its own on/off switch labeled Depth Sounder ). Garmin 2010C is a combination GPS / chartplotter /depthsounder / fishfinder 2. In these waters, it is best to know where you are at all times. The charts aboard will give you that knowledge. Please USE THEM Depth Sounder the most important instrument on the boat! NORTHERN STAR MANUAL 21 Rev: Feb. 16, 2004

GARMIN GPS 2010 COLOR CHART PLOTTER 1. Located at the pilothouse. Refer to the operation manual to operate. 2. The GPS/Plotter is loaded with an electronic Garmin Blue Chart that covers from Olympia to Port Hardy. Additional chart cards can be obtained. VHF RADIOS (2) 1. Icom: Push radio volume and power switch to ON. Monitor channel 16 where safety and distress information and normal communications are initiated. For marine weather, monitor the WX station. The pilothouse VHF radio is located above and to the right of the helm 2. An additional handheld VHF (Icom M11) is located in the right hand pilothouse dash compartment.. 3. Make sure everyone on board is able to perform an emergency distress call to the Coast Guard. It is vital that everyone on board can give the approximate position and description of the vessel to the Coast Guard so they will be able to assist you. Please brief all of your crew on simple, proper radio procedures. It could be a life saving lesson!!! NORTHERN STAR MANUAL 22 Rev: Feb. 16, 2004

AUTOPILOT 1. The Autohelm 6000 is very easy to operate. There are 7 buttons and a course / status display. The course status display tells you what magnetic course is being steered at any given moment. It also indicates if you are in auto mode A or control mode C. Example: A171 indicates the autopilot is steering the boat on a heading of 171 degrees. Don t try to steer with the wheel when the A is flashing! The rudder button need not be adjusted. It determines how much oversteer is input into course corrections. The standby button is for when you plan to steer manually. Push the standby button first when you have to dodge a log or make a sudden course change or if you plan to run the old fashioned way. Example: C171 means you are in control (not the autopilot) and you are on a 171 degree heading. The auto button is only pushed when you decide to stay on the course currently being steered for an extended period of time. I find it very useful to use the GPS chartplotter to set a destination, note the heading for the destination and then set my course using the autopilot accordingly. Note that the chartplotter will read about 4 degrees low verses the autopilot due to local magnetic variation. Remember, the autopilot doesn t relieve a person from standing at the helm on watch for debris and traffic! NORTHERN STAR MANUAL 23 Rev: Feb. 16, 2004

D. STEREO RADIO AND COMPACT DISC (CD) PLAYER Unit is AC powered only. 1. This operates the same as your regular home all in one stereos. It is located in the salon. To turn it on, the appropriate AC source (shore power/generator/inverter) must be selected. 2. When turning on the stereo, make sure the volume is low. You may adjust the radio volume as desired once on. 3. To use the compact disc player, simply insert a CD and hit play. E. TV/VCR AC powered only in the salon but will run just fine on the invertor or generator. NORTHERN STAR MANUAL 24 Rev: Feb. 16, 2004

V. DECK GEAR Mooring lines (9) are in the port deck locker, on the bow and in the cockpit. Fenders (7 12 inch tubes and one 18 inch round, 1 36 inch round) are stored on deck. 2 Water hoses (1 space saver) in the lazarette. Dock power cord (1) and Y connector (1) are in the starboard deck compartment. Anchors (3), a Bruce and CQR (both 60 lbs) on the bow and one 45 lb Danforth in the lazarette. NORTHERN STAR MANUAL 25 Rev: Feb. 16, 2004

VI. ANCHORING The primary 60 lb. CQR at the bow has 250 feet of chain and 100 ft. of Nylon rode. The secondary anchor is a 60 lb Bruce Anchor. It s a backup, and is not connected to any line or chain. However, 100 ft of chain and 250 of nylon is in the anchor lock and ready to be attached if needed. Dropping the Hook : 1. The windlass (anchor winch) draws a lot of power and will drain the batteries very quickly. Always remember to HAVE ENGINE RUNNING WHEN USING THE ELECTRIC WINCH. Only use the winch when raising the anchors. The emergency operating handle is in the port deck locker. 2. Be sure there is at least 10 feet at zero tide in a 360 degree circle. Be sure the boat will not swing into other boats or obstructions if the wind direction were to change. 3. With anchor tied fast, release brake. Pull off 1-2 feet chain onto the deck and reset the brake. Carefully lower the anchor off the chock and pulpit by hand and allow the brake to take all the load. When you re sure you re where you want the anchor set, slowly loosen the brake and let out the chain until the anchor has found the bottom. 4. The nest step is to set the anchor by to jogging the boat in reverse and continue to let out chain until you have at least a 4:1scope (anchor line vs. depth). Use 5:1 in heavier weather. When you have enough scope, set the brake tight. You should do this when the boat is still moving to properly set the anchor. Once it digs in and stops the boat, you know you ve set the hook. 5. The last step is to secure the chain to a point on the deck and loosen the brake. There is a hasp & bolt for this kept on the spare anchor for this purpose. NORTHERN STAR MANUAL 26 Rev: Feb. 16, 2004

VII. DINGHY AND OUTBOARD MOTOR ENSURE DRAIN PLUG IS IN THE DIGHNY BEFORE PUTTING IT IN THE WATER! A BullFrog dinghy - 750lb capacity. The outboard is a 20 HP Honda 4-stroke. 2 3 gal gas tanks are below the bench seat. One to get you there, one to get you back! B. While underway for long distance or rough weather, it is mandatory that you carry the dinghy on the upper level. In rough seas you should secure the dinghy with an extra line for added safety. Do not attempt to tow the dinghy except very short distances in calm water. C. To lower the dinghy, utilize the Davit. Don t try to so this by hand! First lower the side and back rails (hinged). Use the Phillips scredriver to align the rail pin holes to put them up when done. You will need to use the control head and cable located in the pilot house starboard compartment. Plug this in to the end of the davit arm to use the electric winch to both lower and raise the dinghy. D. Once the dinghy is in the water, unhook the hoisting rig and pulley from the dinghy. E. To start the engine, ensure the vent is open on top of the outboard fuel filler cap. Using the bulb on the fuel line, pump fuel into the engine. If engine is cold, pull out the choke for starting. Lower the motor in the water (electric) and turn the key. Do not use the pull start it s for emergencies only. F. When raising & lowering the dinghy, take care not to hit the side of the boat! Make sure the rails are down, and the dinghy bow is facing the bow of the trawler. Raise it all the way up then swing over the top deck onto the chocks. G. I find it easier to soap the top deck chocks (that the dinghy sits on) so I can slide it back into the proper position marked on the deck. NORTHERN STAR MANUAL 27 Rev: Feb. 16, 2004

H. VIII. FUEL AND WATER A. FUEL 1. To help gauge fuel usage, estimate 4 gallons/hour at 2000 RPM. When you leave, both Aft Tanks (which have a sight tubes) will be valved in for the main engine, generator and Webasto. All tanks will be full when you leave. Monitor your hours when on forward and midship tanks. With both tanks valved in, you have over 300 gallons, approx 90 hours of operating time! Fuel Tank Summary: Port Midship Starboard #1 Forward 53 gal #2 Forward 119 gal #3 Forward 115 gal #4 Aft 155 gal #5 Aft 157 gal 2. Make sure if you change the supply tank, change the return as well. Use the trim gauge above the header to send the return to a tank that has room, and is on the high side of the boat. Fuel Supply Header: In this photo fuel is supplied from the Starboard aft tank to the main engine, generator and webasto. NORTHERN STAR MANUAL 28 Rev: Feb. 16, 2004

Fuel return Header Here the return fuel (bypass around fuel pumps) is going back to the starboard aft tank. 3. The Coast Guard is very strict about fuel spills of any amount. Manage the filling process and DO NOT OVERFILL THE TANKS! Fill points are labeled by tank number. There is a key required to open the deck fuel tank openings, located in the starboard side dash locker. If tank fill labels are worn off, refer to the following diagram: BOW #1 53 GAL #2 119 GAL #3 115 GAL #4 155 GAL #5 157 GAL NORTHERN STAR MANUAL 29 Rev: Feb. 16, 2004

4. The Lehman engine runs on No. 2 diesel fuel. At the start of your cruise, the tanks will be filled with 600 gallons of fuel. When you refuel, the fuel inlets (labeled DIESEL) are located on both sides, on deck either side of the pilot house. Clean diesel fuel is essential. Buy only at fueling stations that have a lot of activity. Additionally, please add Sta-Bil additive (stored in starboard deck locker) in ratio prescribed on container basic 1 quart/100 gallons. Make sure engine and electrical equipment is off. Do not fill water and fuel at the same time. This will prevent accidental spillage from one tank to the other. Run blower before restarting. Fuel vapors from other vessels fueling could possibly flow on board and ignite. (Fuel vapors tend to flow downward.) NORTHERN STAR MANUAL 30 Rev: Feb. 16, 2004

5. Diesel will foam during fueling. As the tank fills, backwash will shut down the filling process, stop pumping fuel immediately. BOW THRUSTER The SidePower bow thruster controls are just to the right of the helm in the pilothouse. It is a major assistance when maneuvering the boat in tight quarters. Installed new in 2005, it s thrust is >300% higher than the original. Do not use it unless you re running less than 2 knots. Never run the thruster for more than seconds/use maximum. Usage over 30 seconds is likely to trip the breaker or the thermal cut-off switch just at the critical moment and you ll need to reset the breaker prior to additional usage. If the thermal cut-off switch goes, it will take 30 minutes+ prior to usage again basically, you ve over-heated the electric bow thruster and it needs time to cool off. Both on switches must be pressed simultaneously. Auto shut off will occur in appox. 5 minutes. NORTHERN STAR MANUAL 31 Rev: Feb. 16, 2004

B. WATER 1. Water fill caps are located both side decks. There are two water tanks with a capacity of 180 gallons each total 360 gallons. Both have sight glasses. To avoid contamination of your water, do not fill water tanks at the same time you are re-fueling. It is a good idea when adding water, to rinse down the deck and top sides, but please check with dock attendant first. The San Juan Islands sometimes experience water shortages in the summer. Both hot and cold water systems are pressurized. The pump operates on demand and will start and stop periodically. The circuit breaker to turn the water system on is located in the main salon electrical panel. The water heater holds 11 gallons. Heating occurs either with the engine running or when connected to shore power. If you run out of water, turn off the water heater circuit breaker (AC) immediately. Without water in the water heater, the element will burn up. 2. There is a key required to open the water tanks. Same key can be used as with the fuel tanks, located in the starboard dash locker. Water tanks should be topped off at every opportunity to avoid the possibility of running short of water. IX. GALLEY RANGE This is a propane fueled range/stove. The propane is in the aft deck under the port seat. The propane solenoid is above the stove to the left. Ensure it s on when cooking is desired. Use the peizo lighter (red button) to ignite the burners. Each burner or oven burner must be held in at ignite position while lighting. Once burner is on, release and adjust as desired. Turn solenoid off when not in use. MICROWAVE The microwave will operate from shore power, the generator or the Inverter. It operates like your microwave at home. Use normal precautions about foil and containers. The microwave draws quite of bit of power when using the inverter, so, again, manage your battery power. REFRIGERATOR/FREEZER The switch controlling the Sea Freeze refrigerator is on the DC left side of the main circuit breaker panel in the pilothouse labeled refrig. Leave it on. (The AC refrigerator switch does nothing.) If you wonder if the power is on (it has a remote compressor that is very quiet) open the door. A light should come on (if not, jiggle the door switch and it probably will!) The refrigerator and freezer switches from 12 volts DC to 115 volts AC automatically. Inside the refrigerator high to the left is a NORTHERN STAR MANUAL 32 Rev: Feb. 16, 2004

switch for heater. This is a strip heater above the refrigerator door (below the freezer compartment). It eliminates any condensation that occurs on the outside when you open the door. Leave it in the on position. BELOW COUNTER FREEZER / GRUNERT This is a very efficient and quiet freezer under the counter to the left of the double sinks. Simply turn on the freezer switch located on the main panel in the pilothouse. You can set the desired temperature by setting the dial inside the freezing compartment. We keep a temperature gage inside and usually keep it at 24 degrees. Note it will not serve as a refrigerator, even the lowest setting will freeze.. X. HEADS AND SHOWERS A. HEADS 1. Both heads are connected to a Y valve for discharge overboard or directed into holding tank. There is a separate Y valve for each head for overboard discharge. The guest head s valves are located behind the access door behind the toilet. The master head s valves are in the back of the port hanging locker in the master stateroom. The guest stateroom valve is in the compartment just above the head. 2. In U.S. waters, the Y valve must be secured in the holding tank position. In Canadian waters, it is legal to pump overboard (as of 1999), but you should always use the holding tank in a marina harbor, cove, or other anchorage area. You can pump the holding tank from the hand pump below the floor just aft of the bed in the master stateroom, or dockside using the port fitting. 3. Plugged heads can make your cruise extremely uncomfortable. Marine heads are complicated mechanisms. If you toss even the smallest thing into them from a paper match stick to a hand of hair, it has the potential to choke. So alert all crew members to the few simple precautions. If you did not eat it first, it should not go into the head! Only pass through the heads what passes through you!!! REMEMBER, THERE ARE NO PLUMBERS AT SEA! 4. Use only marine toilet paper, which is biodegradable; use a minimum amount of tissue, and pump sufficiently so that all material is fully pumped through. 5. Master Stateroom Head (electric growler ); The main water pressure pump (pilothouse switch panel) must be on. Pull the switch under the sink. The push the button to the right. Hold the button in until the head evacuates. Then let go and allow the head to re-fill. Repeat as needed. NORTHERN STAR MANUAL 33 Rev: Feb. 16, 2004

Flush Button Pull Switch 6. Make sure you ve flushed enough to clean out the lines with fresh water. When done, don t forget to push the main switch back in. 7. Guest Stateroom Head (Manual Crown ); Turn the white valve all the way to the left to dry. Pump the head to evacuate waste. Turn the white valve all the way to the right to flush. Pump again to rinse and flush. Repeat if necessary. Make sure you ve flushed enough to clean out the lines with fresh water. Holding Tank: (40 Gallon steel tank under the Master Stateroom floor) Use pump out stations (AYC fuel dock or any other fuel dock) Deck connection is on the port side labeled waste Overboard valve and switch is under the Starboard hanging locker floor (must be offshore to use) NORTHERN STAR MANUAL 34 Rev: Feb. 16, 2004

Shower Drain Pumps Master Head Shower Switch Guest Head Shower Pump Switch Turn on the main shower pump switch located in the pilothouse, main breaker panel. Individual shower sump/drain switches in each shower. It is a grey rocker switch. Ensure the sump pump breaker on the AC panel is on prior to using the showers. Please turn off the sump pump when finished with shower or you ll burn out the pump. Remember, there are no plumbers at sea! XI. MISCELLANEOUS A. BILGE PUMPS There are 2 bilge pumps on board: 1 large pump in the bilge that works automatically even when circuit breakers are off. The other is a manual pump in the cockpit. NORTHERN STAR MANUAL 35 Rev: Feb. 16, 2004

D. CABIN HEAT DIESEL The most efficient heat aboard is the Webasto diesel hot water furnace. Controls are next to the pilothouse stairs. Main power switch is on the main control panel. Manual Fan For Pilothouse step vents only Heater Burner To turn on: Turn Heater switch (clockwise) Wait 20 seconds Turn Burner Switch (clockwise) To turn off: Turn Burner off (counterclockwise) Wait 20 seconds Turn Heater switch off (counterclockwise) The Webasto has 4 zones. The Master stateroom controls both stateroom temperatures. The salon Thermostat controls salon temperatures. The base of the pilothouse has a manual 3 speed blower as does the pilothouse console (for defrost as well as pilothouse heat). The Webasto can also move heat from the engine and use it to heat all the spaces. To do this, simply turn on the heater, but not the burner. ELECTRIC Electric heaters (3) are located in the salon, master and guest staterooms. They will only work with AC power (shore or genset). If on shorepower, watch the amperage load. These heaters plus a water heater, or battery charger can easily exceed the 30 amp limit of dock breakers. We NORTHERN STAR MANUAL 36 Rev: Feb. 16, 2004

run one at time when on shore power to avoid overloading breakers. All three can be run if you re on the genset, however the Webasto will be most efficient. XII. GENERAL INVENTORY AND AMENITIES A.
