EVOLVING MARKETPLACE SMART PHONES 4 OPPORTUNITY OVERVIEW Evolving marketplaces and technologies offer greater solutions for consumers and businesses 5 OPPORTUNITY OVERVIEW 6 2
IN OTHER WORDS American Thermostat Breakdown 140 Millions of Households Smart Thermostat All Others 7 TECHNOLOGY OVERVIEW Types of thermostats Manual thermostats Programmable thermostats Wi-Fi programmable thermostats Smart thermostats 8 9 3
MANUAL THERMOSTATS History Lesson 1620 to mid 1880s A number of inventors create or improve thermostats for commercial use 1183 Electric room thermostat patented by Warren S Johnson (company would evolve into Johnson Controls) 1886 Albert Butz invents the "damper flapper to automatically stoke the fire in a furnace, by opening a flap to let in air, when the room cooled (company would evolve into Honeywell) Designed in 1941, Honeywell (Minneapolis-Honeywell Regulator Co) introduces the T-86 Round Late-1980s The Americans with Disabilities Act and a move away from moving parts creates the digital thermostat 10 MANUAL THERMOSTATS Features Mechanical or electric measurement of temperature A temperature drop closes a switch creating a call for heat When temperature is satisfied the switch opens ending the call If you want to change the temperature you move the dial or press a button every time you want to make a change 11 PROGRAMMABLE THERMOSTATS History Lesson First residential setback thermostat, the Electric Heat Regulator Co (Company would evolve into Honeywell) introduced. Marketed as the Jewell, the homeowner set the thermostat back at night and the clock in the thermostat set the temperature in the morning Honeywell adds a second clock to allow the thermoset to change the temperature at night and in the morning California, under the new Building Energy Efficiency Standards, requires a setback thermostat in new construction Late-1980s the Americans with Disabilities Act and a move away from moving parts creates the digital thermostat 1986 Honeywell Chronotherm III the feature set for a digital programmable thermostat 12 4
PROGRAMMABLE THERMOSTATS Features Mechanical or electric measurement of temperature A temperature drop closes a switch creating a call for heat When temperature is satisfied the switch opens ending the call Timer changes the set point at specific times If you want to change the temperature you move the dial or press a button. That temperature is held until the next event. Then it automatically goes back to the programmed temperature unless you use the permanent hold. 13 WI-FI OR CONNECTED THERMOSTATS History Lessons 1975 X10 technology allows devices to be controlled by an automation system or remotely by phone 1980s - commercial automation goes residential 2000s Wireless-N brings wireless mainstream 2010s The interconnectedness of things 14 WI-FI OR CONNECTED THERMOSTATS Features Mechanical or Electric measurement of temperature A temperature drop closes a switch creating a call for heat When temperature is satisfied the switch opens ending the call Timer changes the set point at specific times If you want to change the temperature you move the dial, press a button or remote access through smart phone or computer. That temperature is held until the next event. Then it automatically goes back to the programmed temperature unless you use the permanent hold. 15 5
SMART THERMOSTATS Features 2009 Smart Thermostat named one of the 50 best inventions of 2009 by Time Magazine 2009 Ecobee Smart released 2011 Nest releases first generation 16 SMART THERMOSTATS Features Mechanical or Electric measurement of temperature A temperature drop closes a switch creating a call for heat When temperature is satisfied the switch opens ending the call Timer changes the set point at specific times If you want to change the temperature you move the dial or press a button. 8 SMART THERMOSTATS DEFINITION Two different definitions: Manufacturer definition Utility company definition 22 SMART THERMOSTATS DEFINITION Two different definitions: Manufacturer definition Utility company definition The fact is: Every smart thermostat is a Wi-Fi thermostat but not every Wi-Fi thermostat is a smart thermostat 23 WHAT ARE SMART THERMOSTATS? Smart thermostats can have: Wi-Fi connection to the internet Occupancy determination Proprietary control over equipment 8
SMART THERMOSTATS INCREASE YOUR I.Q. What are Wi-Fi thermostats? WHAT ARE WI-FI THERMOSTATS? Just like a standard thermostat Traditional thermostat terminals have On or off heating and cooling calls Traditional fuzzy logic for determining when to come on Run time history, indoor temperature, desired temperature and some magic algorithm to decide when to turn on 26 WHAT ARE WI-FI THERMOSTATS? What makes them different? 27 9
WHAT ARE WI-FI THERMOSTATS? Ability to: Remotely change the desired temperature Use weather data to tweak run times and off times 28 WHAT ARE WI-FI THERMOSTATS? Usually universal Single stage heat/cool Multi-stage heat/cool Single stage heat pump Multi-stage heat pump 29 WHAT ARE WI-FI THERMOSTATS? Power requirements Wi-Fi thermostats need power to run display, Wi-Fi connection, make heating and cooling call Power stealing. No common wire required. May have some issue with phantom calls or intermittent operation Battery. No common wire. Batteries need to be replaced 24VAC. Requires common wire. Pull new wires or use an add-a-wire or 3 to 4 wire adapter 30 10
WHAT ARE WI-FI THERMOSTATS? Wiring Auto identify connected wires Selecting wired terminals Equipment type Heat/cool Heat call, thermostat turns on fan (electric) Heat call, equipment turns on Fan (gas) Heat pump Heat pump, leave on compressor during auxiliary heat (electric) Heat pump, turn off compressor during auxiliary heat (gas) 31 WHAT ARE WI-FI THERMOSTATS? What happens when the gas/electric switch is on? Testing Electric furnace Heat pump 32 WHAT ARE WI-FI THERMOSTATS? Rh: Power to the heating circuit Rc: Power to the cooling circuit C: Common wire W1: First stage heating (heat/cool) OR auxiliary heat (heat pump) W2: First stage heating (heat/cool) OR emergency heat (heat pump) Y1: First stage cooling (heat/cool) OR first stage heat and cool (heat pump) Y2: Second stage cooling (heat/cool) OR first stage heat and cool (heat pump) O: Cooling mode (heat pump) B: Heating mode (heat pump) 33 11
WHAT ARE WI-FI THERMOSTATS? Testing equipment Up down on touchscreen or turn of the dial Minimum off times 2 minutes heat and 4 minutes compressor 34 WHAT ARE WI-FI THERMOSTATS?
