5 Preface This manual explains how to use the M3099EX/GX/EH/GH image scanner. This manual contains OPERATING INSTRUCTION, CLEANING, REPLACEMENT OF PARTS, ADJUSTMENT and TROUBLESHOOT- ING. Refer to Operator s Guide for the basic information about the M3099EX/ GX/EH/GH. The M3099EX/GX/EH/GH is very fast and highly functional image scanner developed for volume filing, using charge-coupled device (CCD) image sensors. This scanner features duplex scanning and high quality image, processing with an automatic document feeder (ADF).

6 Conventions Special information, such as warnings, cautions are indicated as follows: WARNING WARNING indicates that personal injury may result if you do not follow procedure correctly. CAUTION CAUTION indicates that damage to the scanner may result if you do not follow a procedure correctly. The following symbols are used in this manual. Used for general WARNING and CAUTION. Be careful not to pinch your fingers or hands.

10 CHAPTER 1 OPERATING INSTRUCTION This chapter describes how to load document, how to insert document manually and how to open/close the upper transport unit. Loading Document Inserting Document Manually Upper Transport Unit 1-1

11 Loading Document Load the document for reading. Stacker Lock lever Guide Hopper table Extension 1 Fan the sheets before setting the document on the hopper table. NOTE Hold both ends and bend the documents into an arch. Then hold tightly and straighten them. The center of documents swells and air is introduced between the documents. 15 to 20 mm Extension Line mark Guide 2 Lock lever Guide Extension Line mark Lock lever Adjust the guides to the document width. NOTE Squeeze the lock lever to free the guides. Remove paper clips and staples. Flatten the hole with your finger. Load documents face-up. Load documents lower than the line mark. Use the extension for long documents. Do not mix different width documents. 1-2

12 3 Adjust the stacker table to the document size. [1000 sheets hopper type] NOTE Extend the stacker table and extension for long documents. (greater Stopper than A4 or LT) Turn down the lever and extend the stopper for small documents. 13 Inserting Document Manually Hopper table Document (face-up) Guide plate Guides 1 Place documents face-up at the center of the hopper table. 2 Insert the documents until the front ends touch the guide plate of the hopper table and adjust the guides to the document size. 1-4

14 WARNING Before lowering down the unit, make sure that the area between the main machine and the upper transport unit is clear of all objects and fingers. Opening the Upper Transport Unit Operator panel Lever 1 Lift the lever located below the operator panel to open the upper transport unit. CAUTION Make sure that the upper transport unit is in the locked position before reaching inside the scanner. Closing the Upper Transport Unit 1 Lift the upper transport unit to release the lock. 2 Lower the upper transport unit with both hands. NOTE Press the upper transport unit with both hands to secure the lock. 1-5

17 WARNING Wait at least 3 minutes after turning off the power before cleaning. Rollers ACHTUNG Warten Sie nach dem Reinigen mindestens 3 Minuten bevor Sie den Scanner wieder anschalten. Cleaning the Rollers with Cleaning Sheets 1 Set the hopper table guides to B4 width. While pressing Mode 2, turn on the power of the scanner. When Warming-up Now disappeared, press Mode 2 once then Mode 1 once. B4 B4 2 Remove the protective paper from the cleaning sheet. Guide(left) Front Cleaning sheet 3 Protective paper Cleaning sheet Place the cleaning sheet on the hopper table by aligning it with the guide (left) with the adhesive side up. Then press Start When HOPPER EMPTY is displayed, press Stop. Place the same cleaning sheet on the hopper table with the adhesive side up by aligning with the guide (right). Then press Start. When HOPPER EMPTY is displayed, press Stop. Cleaning sheet Front Guide(right) 7 Remove the protective paper from a new cleaning sheet and place it with the adhesive side face-down. Then repeat steps 3 through 6. After cleaning is complete, turn the power off. 2-3

18 Cleaning the Rollers with Dry Cloth, Isopropyl Alcohol or Cleaner F1 Rollers Steel rollers Pick rollers Belt (inside) Open the upper transport unit. Apply isopropyl alcohol or cleaner F1 to cloth. Wipe the pick rollers, belt and the upper and lower transport unit rollers. Allow to dry. Cleaning the Steel Rollers with Cleaner F2 WARNING Do not use cleaner F2 on rubber rollers or belt. Steel roller Q-Tips Rollers Pick rollers Belt (inside) Open the upper transport unit. Moisten a Q-Tip with cleaner F2. Wipe the metal roller surfaces while turning the shaft by hand. Allow to dry.

19 Transport Paths and Glass Surface WARNING Wait at least 3 minutes after turning off the power before cleaning. ACHTUNG Warten Sie nach dem Reinigen mindestens 3 Minuten bevor Sie den Scanner wieder anschalten. Cleaning the Transport Paths 1 2 Open the upper transport unit. Wipe the transport paths with a dry cloth or soaked in isopropyl alcohol or cleaner F1. Note Use a vacuum cleaner to remove paper dust from the transport paths. Cleaning the Glass Surface 1 2 Open the upper transport unit. Pull down on the sheet guide assembly tabs to remove it. Sheet guide assembly Wipe the glass clean with a dry cloth (or moistened with isopropyl alcohol or cleaner F1 as necessary). Align the sheet guide assembly in the guide rails and push it back into place. Close the upper transport unit. 2-5

Wipe the four sensor surfaces with a dry cloth (or moistened with isopropyl alcohol as necessary). Close the upper transport unit. Ejection Sensor 1 2 Open the upper transport unit. Wipe the ejection sensor surface with a dry cloth (or moistened with isopropyl alcohol as necessary). 22 Front-Side Lamp Lamp socket cover Lamp (inside) 1 2 Open the upper transport unit. Remove the two lamp socket covers (U-shaped spring clips) by pulling the green tabs toward you. 3 Rotate the lamp a half turn and pull it down. CAUTION Do not pull the heater wire. 2-8

23 WARNING Wait at least 3 minutes after turning off the power before cleaning. ACHTUNG Warten Sie nach dem Reinigen mindestens 3 Minuten bevor Sie den Scanner wieder anschalten. 4 Clean the clear portion of the lamp with a dry cloth. CAUTION Do not remove the tape from the heater. Do not change the heater position. 5 Align the two metal socket covers and snap them on to the ends. CAUTION When you re-clamp the right bracket, do not pinch the heater cable. (yellow/black 4 cables) 6 Close the upper transport unit. 2-9

25 Back-Side Lamp Side cover Lamp unit Slide and open the side cover. Loosen the thumb screw. Pull out the lamp unit. Lamp unit Thumb screw Lamp 4 Rotate the lamp so that the two terminals on each end align with the slot on the lamp socket and remove the lamp. Heater Heater Wire CAUTION Do not pull the heater wire. 3-2

26 WARNING Never replace the lamp without turning off the power. Wait at least 3 minutes after turning off the power before touching the lamp. ACHTUNG Wechseln Sie niemals die Lampe ohne den Scanner auszuschalten. Warten Sie mindestens 3 Minuten nach Ausschalten, bevor Sie die Lampe anfassen. Heater Lamp 5 Insert a fingernail at the end of the heater to separate it from the lamp. Heater CAUTION Do not pull the heater wire. Do not remove the tape from the heater. 6 7 Attach a new lamp to the heater. Be sure to face the clear portion of the lamp up and center the lamp in the heater, otherwise black stripes may appear in the image on the display. Insert the terminals of the lamp into the socket and rotate until the clear portion faces up. 8 Re-install the lamp unit using the two grooves (➀ and ➁) and guide plate (➂). ➂ ➀ 9 Tighten the thumb screw and reinsall the side cover. If the thumb screw is loose, the error message COVER OPEN may appear. ➁ Lamp unit 3-3

27 Front-Side Lamp Front-side lamp and heater (inside) 1 2 Open the upper transport unit. Remove the two metal lamp socket covers (U-shaped spring clips) by pulling the green tabs toward you. Tab Metal lamp socket cover 3 Rotate the lamp a half turn and pull it down. Front 3-4

28 WARNING Never replace the lamp without turning off the power. Wait at least 3 minutes after turning off the power before touching the lamp. (yellow/black 4 cables) Attach a new lamp to the heater. Be sure to face the clear portion of the lamp up and center the lamp in the heater, otherwise black stripes may appear in the image of the document. Heater Insert the terminals of the lamp into the sockets and rotate until the clear portion faces down. Align the two socket covers and snap them on to the ends. Close the upper transport unit. 29 Roller ASY Use abrasion counter when replacing the roller ASY. (See Appendix) Document sensor unit Levers(green) Roller ASY 1 2 Open the upper transport unit. Disconnect the two relay connectors by pinching the lock tabs on the connectors. Connectors CAUTION Do not pull the wire. 3 Unhook the two levers (green) and pull them toward you. Levers(green) 3-6

31 Belt and Belt ASY Use abrasion counter when replacing the belt. (See Appendix) Document sensor unit Levers(green) Belt ASY (inside) 1 2 Open the upper transport unit. Unhook the two levers (green) and pull them toward you. Levers(green) While holding up the document sensor remove the roller ASY. Set the guides to B4 width. Hold the guide plate at the top and pull it out while pushing the bottom in with your thumb. Guide plate Guide 3-8

32 WARNING Wait at least 3 minutes after turning off the power before replacement. ACHTUNG Warten Sie mindestens 3 Minuten nach Ausschalten, bevor Sie mit dem Austausch beginnen. 6 Grip the shaft of the belt ASY with both hands and lift it up and out. Belt Roller White dot Note Attach a new belt so that a white dot on the belt side appears on the left when viewed from front. Otherwise jamming or pick miss may occur. Tab Belt ASY 10 Align the tab at the end of the shaft and reinstall the belt ASY. 3-10

34 11 Reinstall the guide plate. Note Confirm that the guide plate is installed correctly. If it is miss connected, it will cause paper jams and noise by touching the hopper table. 12 While holding up the document sensor unit reinstall the roller ASY Close the two levers (green). Close the upper transport unit. 3-11

35 Pick Rollers Use abrasion counter when replacing pick rollers. (See Appendix) Pick roller 1 2 Open the upper transport unit. Remove the roller ASY (See p3-6) before removing the U-shaped clips. U-shaped clip 3 Remove the U-shaped clips from the two rollers by pushing the U- shaped clip out. 3-12

36 WARNING Wait at least 3 minutes after turning off the power before replacement. ACHTUNG Warten Sie mindestens 3 Minuten nach Ausschalten, bevor Sie mit dem Austausch beginnen. 4 Remove and replace the pick rollers with new parts. 40 4 Attach a new print head and turn the printer head lock lever back. 5 6 Attach and close the endorser cover. Reset the print head life counter. Note See Operator s Guide Appendix B or Chapter 6 for the information on the life counter reset. CAUTION The reset of the print head life counter is important for the correct detection of the new print head life. 3-17

42 Separation Pressure Adjustment Refer to Symptom 7 on pages 5-11 before making the adjustment. Roller ASY Levers(green) Guide plate Guide Hopper table Open the upper transport unit. Disconnect the two relay connectors. Push the two levers (green) toward each other to disengage them from the upper locking holes and lower the two levers until they release from the lower locking holes. Levers(green) Document sensor unit Roller ASY Hopper table Guide Guide plate Lift the document sensor unit and keep it at the upper position with one hand and pull the Roller ASY out with the other hand. Move the guide outwards on the hopper table completely to the end. Hold both ends of the guide plate, press them down and then lift them toward you to remove the guide. 4-2

ACHTUNG Warten Sie mindestens 3 Minuten nach Ausschalten, bevor Sie mit dem Austausch beginnen. 7 Adjust the separation pressure using the separation pressure adjustment lever according to the displayed error as follows: Miss pick: Turn clockwise 45 degrees. (Increase the separation pressure.) Double feed: Turn counterclockwise 45 degrees. (Decrease the separation pressure.) If separation pressure adjustment lever does not move, please contact manufacturer s authorized service center. 4-3

45 2 Pinch the tab (green) and slide it to the position you want to print. Printer head Note The print position is indicated by the indicator behind the tab and the label attached on the rear cover. 49 Initial Checks If a problem occurs, check the following items before contacting manufacturer s authorized service center. Symptom1 The power does not go on. Operator panel power Power cable Is the power cable connected correctly? NO Connect the power cable correctly. YES Power switch Is the power switch on? NO Press the power switch. YES SCSI connector Terminator Is the terminator connected? (M3099GX/GH) NO Connect the terminator. YES Contact manufacturer s authorized service center. 5-4

50 Symptom2 Read processing does not start. Operator panel power Document Are the documents loaded correctly? (Straight edge, no dogear, no bend corners, staples) NO Load the documents correctly. (See p1-2) YES Interface cable Is the interface cable connected correctly? Or is the baud rate correct? (M3099EX/EH) NO Connect the interface cable correctly. Or set the correct baud rate. YES Operator panel HEATER ALARM 1 or 2 appears? NO Contact manufacturer s authorized service center. YES Recycle the power and check the alarm again. When the same alarm appeared, set the heater control OFF by setup mode. See Operator s Guide. 5-5

Return the jammed or double-feed document to the hopper and read it again. Press the stop button or issue the start command. Load documents on the hopper and start reading them. Close the upper transport unit or the endorser cover. Or tighten the thumb screw to lock the back-side lamp unit if it is loose. Open the upper transport unit and remove the document on the transport path. Close the unit. Return the jammed document on the hopper and read it again. Open the upper transport unit and correct the roller unit setting. Close the upper transport unit. See Roller ASY Replacement. Reduce document stack in the hopper. PRINT HEAD NOT SET PRINT HEAD ALARM Press Stop to reset the error and set the print head. Press Stop to reset the error and set the print head again. 60 Appendix Abrasion counter Fujitsu scanner has the feature to count paper sheets. To access this feature please follow this direction. Note It is recommended to use the abrasion counter as follows. Replace the roller ASY, belt ASY, and pad at every 600,000 sheets or one year. And reset the abrasion counter. Replace the pick roller, belt, and pad at 300,000 sheets by abrasion counter reading. These sheet counts are estimated based on Xerox paper types. If carbonless paper is used, or if the rollers are not cleaned at proper intervals, the life may be shorten. Access to abrasion counter 1 Press Stop at ready status. The scanner displays the abrasion counter on the right bottom corner of the LCD.
