By its nature, every casting varies slightly because each one has its own sand mould, so no two cookers are exactly the same. We take pride in maintaining the time honoured processes of designing, making, enamelling and building our range cookers whilst embracing evolution and product development. 4 WHETHER COOKING FOR THE FAMILY OR HEATING YOUR HOME, YOU ARE ALWAYS IN CONTROL WITH AN ESSE. If you have never cooked or heated your home with a range cooker you may be forgiven for thinking that you will have to learn a whole new way of living. But the truth is, you soon learn that it s your ESSE that will easily adapt to your way of life. It is all down to its supreme controllability. For example... At Christmas time, you can make simple, original gifts for your family and friends such as home made preserves, delicate dried flower arrangements or herb pot pourri. Get the maximum amount of juice from lemons, limes, oranges or any fresh citrus fruit that you press by simply placing them on top of the hotplate cover for ten to fifteen minutes to warm up. Fill your home with the relaxing aroma of a natural herbal scent by simply placing a sprig of rosemary or bay leaf on the simmering plate. Dry awkward shaped cooking utensils like graters, piping nozzles and garlic crushers on top of the hotplate lid and within a few minutes they re ready to put away, completely dry and with no fear of rusting. Dry and air clothes efficiently by hanging them from the towel rail of your ESSE. 11 We ve been listening to ESSE people for a century and a half Listening to the comments of our loyal customers over the past century and a half has helped us to develop the ESSE of today into a formidable range, unsurpassed in either quality or heritage by any other brand. Exactly what makes an ESSE so special? Well, to begin with there s the choice of fuel type - oil, gas, electric and even wood burning. And then there s the wide variety of efficient heating options that provide outstanding levels of controllability and performance. And of course it doesn t end there... Outstanding ovens Perhaps the secret to why ESSEs cook so superbly can be found in the way their ovens work. Heat flows around the outside of the ovens through a series of heavily insulated flueways. This heat is then transferred to the oven interior through super-conductive walls producing an even, gentle heat. Because there is no uneven, direct heat or harsh flames to dry the food, juices and flavours are sealed in ensuring maximum taste, whether you are cooking a simple dish or a sumptuous feast. The generous second oven operates at approximately two thirds the temperature of the main oven, making roasting and baking simplicity itself. Unique dog bone hotplate The variable temperature cast iron hotplate is both highly efficient and extremely versatile. It will quickly heat up from cold and retain that heat for highly economical operation. Pans can be moved from boiling on the left, to simmering or slow boil on the right, with an easy slide action. The electric ESSE features a unique ceramic glass hotplate that has two sets of concentrically expanding elements. Each can be set to the required coverage and regulated to the desired temperature setting, enabling you to boil up to six large pans or gently simmer just one small one. Maximum temperature is available in just four seconds so pans and hotplate kettles very quickly reach boiling point. Oil Vaporising Models - Simple and ruggedly reliable, requiring no electricity to operate, they will continue to cook even in the event of a power cut. If using the electric model as a space heater it will use 1/3 kw per hour to keep the cooker warm. Running costs compare favourably with conventional central heating boilers. lbs PER HOUR Flues and location Most ESSEs require a properly sized and fitted flue to ensure that the cooker operates correctly. The flue carries away the products of combustion, assists the supply of air to the burner and helps to draw hot gases through the flueways around the ovens, to ensure even temperatures. Flue performance is measured by determining the flue draught, which requires special equipment and can only be done when the cooker is installed and working. This forms part of the commissioning process. An existing chimney or similar flue may be suitable, which must be lined prior to installation. Alternatively a new flue may be installed which should terminate clear of the roof or any other nearby building, bank or tree that might create wind turbulence affecting the flue. The flue should be of a minimum height, generally of 4.5m and as vertical as possible, keeping bends to a minimum and deviating no more than 30º from vertical. If it is not possible to accommodate a conventional flue, it may be possible to compensate using a suitable power flue. We recommend that you discuss this with your dealer and installer. 14 Questions & Answers Can I have an ESSE that is just a cooker? Yes. Whichever fuel type you choose there s a cooking only model available. Do I have to leave my ESSE on all the time? No. Most models can be switched on or off as required. However, because all ESSEs are controllable many owners choose to run them continuously on minimum setting. This way they use no more fuel than switching on and off as required, thanks to their superb insulating properties. Single burner models with a boiler will produce some hot water as a result of cooking (see table on page 20). How quickly does an ESSE heat up? There are slight variations across the range but as a guide, assuming the cooker is on its lowest setting, maximum temperature can be reached in 25 minutes. The electric model will achieve this from cold in the same time and its ceramic hob will reach maximum temperature in just four seconds. Do you have to change the way you cook? No. You can use an ESSE as you would any conventional cooker. However, because of its unique range qualities, you will be able to take advantage of many aspects of range cooking that are simply not available with a conventional oven. Your new ESSE comes with a superb country range cook book which is full of mouth-watering recipes that are ideally suited to range cooking. Is it noisy? No. Other than the pressure jet, all models are virtually silent. Pressure jet ranges have a reputation for being noisy but this is not the case with an ESSE. Whilst the pressure jets can be heard they are extremely quiet in their operation. Is fitting included in the price? No. ESSEs are pre-built and fully tested before they leave the factory, so they do not need to be assembled on site unlike some range cookers. Installation costs will vary depending on the model you choose. A central heating model will need to be plumbed into your system, whereas a cooking only model will simply need a fuel supply and a suitable flue arrangement. The electric model needs only a power supply. Your ESSE dealer should be happy to arrange a site visit and advise on installation. Are ESSEs expensive to run? No. The excellent insulating and thermal properties of all ESSEs make them economical to run even when used continuously. Add to that greater controllability and flexibility and an ESSE becomes a very attractive proposition when considering running costs. How much heat can an ESSE give to the kitchen? It depends on the model you choose and whether you run it continuously or not. Assuming that your ESSE is running at maximum temperature with both hotplate covers lifted, it will radiate a maximum of 3kw into the kitchen. Are the ovens self cleaning? Self cleaning is a direct result of constant use which ESSEs, like all true range cookers, are best suited to. Any spills or splashes are simply carbonised when the oven is used at maximum temperature (electric models have easy clean vitreous enamel ovens). Is the bottom oven just a warming oven? No. It is a true oven that operates at approximately two thirds of the temperature in the main oven. On electric models the bottom oven can itself be regulated to the desired temperature. How often does an ESSE need to be serviced? Every ESSE is designed to offer a lifetime of service and comes with a comprehensive cast iron guarantee. We recommend that you have your ESSE inspected annually, just as you would a central heating boiler. How many radiators will an ESSE power? This will depend on the maximum output of the model you choose. We recommend that you take advice from your plumber or ESSE dealer to select the right model for your heating needs, but as a guide you can calculate this assuming 160Btu/h equals 1 square foot of radiator surface. Boiler outputs from 23,000Btu/h to 106,000Btu/h are available. Does it need to be located on an outside wall? No. As long as your chosen model s flue requirements are complied with. Electric and catalytic gas models do not require any flue offering maximum siting flexibility. Can I cook if I don t want to run the central heating? Yes. All twin burner models offer independent operation of their cooking and heating functions. Can an ESSE be controlled like a conventional oven? Yes. You will find that an ESSE offers a greater degree of controllability than most range cookers, indeed it is something we are very proud of. Twin burner models offer outstanding controllability for both cooking and heating and the electric model takes control of its various functions to unprecedented levels. Does it need to be decommissioned in the summer? No. An ESSE is designed for maximum flexibility and year round use thanks to its outstanding levels of controllability. What will I do without a grill? Most grilling requirements can be adequately met by placing food close to the top of the main oven.
