17 Rheology Rheology is defined as the science of deformation and flow of soft matter. In practice, the word "rheology" normally refers to the flow and deformation of "non-classical" materials such as rubber, molten plastics, polymer solutions, slurries and pastes, electro-rheological fluids, blood, muscle, composites, soils, and paints. These materials can exhibit varied and striking rheological properties that classical fluid mechanics and elasticity cannot describe. Though the word "rheology" was coined in 1929, the rapid development of the subject began 20 years later. (From the Univ. of Wisconsin-Madison, College of Engineering)

18 Viscosity Wheel or roller applications typically use thicker waterborne adhesives that range from 2000 cps. to 5000 cps. Rheology is normally not an issue with roller applications Contact extrusion applicators use adhesives that are in the 1000 cps. to 2500 cps. range Rheology is normally not a big concern with contact applications Non-contact applicators are more sensitive to viscosity and require products in the 250 cps. to 800 cps. range Rheology is of key importance particularly as production speeds increase to over 1000 pieces per minute, i.e., two 600 cps. adhesives can machine totally different in an enclosed, pressurized system.
