The resulting centrifugal force causes the solder paste within the cartridge to repeatedly fold over itself thereby mixing and softening the paste. 5 FORWARD 4 Thank you for purchasing this MALCOM SOLDER PASTE MIXER, MODEL SPS-5. This product has a centrifuge that utilizes pseudo-planetary motion to mix and soften solder paste to an even consistency. Please read this manual thoroughly before using the SPS-5, so that you are fully acquainted with its operation. Notes: 1. Specifications and improvements are subject to change without notice. 2. Please retain the original shipping box, packing material and shipping bolt used when this unit was shipped. Since the SPS-5 is a sensitive device, it can be damaged if it is shipped with inadequate packing material. In such cases, repairs will be charged even if the unit is under warranty. 3. Never disassemble the unit. If the unit has been disassembled, or if it appears to have been disassembled, warranty repair will be void. All such repairs will be charged to customer. 6 APPENDIX 5 A. Theory Many automated solder paste mixers have been developed. Some use a rotating paddle, a few shake the solder paste, and others subject the paste to centrifugal force. The SPS series, in effect does all of this without even opening the solder paste jar. The easiest way to understand how the SPS series works, is to observe its operation from several viewpoints. Imagine yourself reduced in size and sitting in the center of the centrifuge of the unit. As the centrifuge turns, you feel no centrifugal force but you can watch the housing containing the solder jar spin around in front of you. As you walk away from the center, you will feel the centrifugal force become greater and greater. Standing in front of the spinning housing, you feel the same force that is acting upon the solder paste inside the jar. Let's remove the solder paste and put you inside of the jar. The centrifugal force causes you to be pressed to the wall. Since the jar is also spinning, you begin to tumble -much like clothes in a dryer. Take into consideration that the housing is mounted at an angle, and so as you tumble, you find yourself rolling towards the top, and then toward the bottom. What is happening, is that you are being mixed and shaken up at the same time. This is what happens to solder paste in the SPS series. In addition, since the solder paste is so viscous, this mixing and shaking motion tends to raise its temperature. A solder paste put into the SPS series can be mixed, shaken and heated, -all at the same time. ω1 ω2 M

(1) If solder paste were to be mixed with a narrow blade, where a 1 kg force was applied with a 2 cm wide by 5 cm long blade: The contact area S = 2.5 = 10 (sqcm)... (2) The stress acting over this area: σ = F/S = 1 (kgf)/10 (sqcm) = 0.1 (kgf/sqcm)... (3) and: 1 (kdgf) = 9.8 (N) = 9.8E5 (dyn)... (4) combining (3) and (4) : F = E5 = 9.8E4 (dyn/sqcm)... (5) If we consider the radius of rotation, r = 15 (cm), and that the radius does not fluctuate that much by the rotation of the housing, then the speed required to most closely simulate the stress caused by the previously mentioned blade: n = 1 v (F/(4 π π ρ r )) = v (9.8E4/(4 π π 5.15)) ρ =, 5.75 RPS or 345 RPM

9 SPS-5 PASTE CARTRIDGE 8 Sealer Cap Paste In case the paste is not properly compacted in the cartridge (i.e., paste too cold or no room for air in cartridge): 1) Remove plug. 2) Hold cartridge upside down. Hit against table 2-3 times. The impact should compact the paste and move towards cap (see below). This will leave a 1/2 to 1 space for paste to move in cartridge during mixing. 3) IMPORTANT!! Replace plug. 4) Install cartridge into the holder 5) IMPORTANT!! Before spinning make sure to tighten clamp that secures the cartridge in the holder. Do a 5 minute test run. Plug NOTES: Sealer remains in cartridge at all times. A plastic plunger (provided by Malcom) may be used in cartridge, where there is a low volume of paste. The plunger secures the sealer in and will compensate for empty space that could cause problems during mixing (see picture below). Plunger Sealer ½ - 1 Table surface

10 OPERATIONAL PROCEDURES: 9 Preparation 1. Turn main power ON. Switch is located on lower front center of the unit. (Due to a safety lock feature, the lid to the unit will not open unless power is turned ON). Paste Preparation 2. Take two paste cartridges from refrigeration and remove the bottom plug of the paste cartridge. Hold the paste cartridge upside down and hit against a hard surface. This will compact the paste and the air will be evenly distributed. Replace plug. Note: Make sure that both paste cartridges have equal amounts of paste, otherwise the unit will not be balanced. (see note below) 3. Open hinged cover to cartridge holder. Place paste cartridge inside the holder. Using the clamp, slide the paste down to the slotted window of the holder. Tighten clamp and close hinged cover. In case paste cartridge is not full: A plastic plunger is used for paste cartridges that are only partially filled. Place the plastic plunger inside paste cartridge. The plunger will compact the paste down into the cartridge. The plunger is to remain inside the cartridge while the unit is mixing. Operation 4. Close lid to unit. 5. Set timer to desired to length of time (at least five minutes) 6. Press START. 7. Timer will automatically stop unit. During operation the lid will not open. 11 FUNCTIONS: Power Switch This is the main power switch. 30 seconds after the power is turned ON, the door lock will release and the top cover can be opened. When the power is shut OFF, the door lock is re-engaged. 2. Stop Switch In an emergency, to stop the mixing process, push the STOP SWITCH. A beep will sound and the timer LED will show "00". 3. Start Switch: After setting the timer, press START SWITCH to start mixing. 4. Timer Setting Switch This now sets the desired mixing time. Turning it clockwise will increase the time displayed on the LED. Turning counter-clockwise will decrease time. There is rollover at "99" and "00" minutes. A series of beeps will sound when the display shows "00". 5. Timer LED Display: This display shows the set time and during mixing, the time remaining. 6. Ready LED: LED will light when the cover is unlocked and it is possible to open. 7. Door Lock LED LED indicates that the door lock has been activated. The "Ready LED" and the "Door Lock LED" will not be on at the same time. 8. Balance Error LED This lights when the centrifuge becomes unbalanced. At this time, the mixing will STOP. 9. In Rotation LED This is the decimal point of the timer LED. It will flash during the mixing process. It is labeled, "RUN". 10. Handle To open the top cover, once unlocked. Do NOT use this handle for carrying or moving the SPS unit. There are recesses at the lower sides of the SPS unit for these purposes. 11. Housing The solder paste jar is placed her and secured with the clamp. The housing is a special size to accommodate a particular. Due to this, the SPS unit must be ordered with this certain jar in mind. 12. Clamp: Keeps the solder paste jar inside of the housing.

12 USAGE A. Operation Power ON, beep sounds Door lock releases. Open top cover. Release clamp. Insert jar. Secure clamp. Close cover. Set time. Press START. Door lock engages. Mixing, timer counts down. Beep sounds, rotation sounds. Door lock releases. Open top cover. Release clamp. Remove jar. 10 second delay Stops completely. Turn On the power switch on the top panel. The timer LED will light, the door lock LED will illuminate and a series of beeps will sound seconds later, the door lock LED will turn off, the ready LED will light, and the door lock releases. The top cover may now be opened. 3. Place solder paste jar into housing. Make sure it fits snugly and secure it in place with the clamp. You may find that the housing is positioned in a way that inserting the solder jar difficult, -in that case, gently spin the centrifuge so that the housing will align for the solder jar. This may take several revolutions of the centrifuge. Also, if the clamp cannot be opened or closed because of obstructions, carefully rotate the centrifuge so that it aligns with ample space. 4. Close the cover Use the timer setting switch to dial the desired mixing time. Clockwise will INCREASE the time, counter-clockwise will DECREASE the time. The time setting will roll over at "99" and "00". 6. Press the start switch. The door lock will engage, the door lock LED will illuminate and the centrifuge will start to spin. 7. After two and a half minutes, the rotational speed of the centrifuge will increase. If the centrifuge has not balanced at this time, the balance error LED will illuminate. A series of beeps will sound and the mixing will stop. Inspect the centrifuge, if nothing is wrong, then continue from step #4. 8. If you press the stop switch or the timer has counted down to "00", beeps will sound and the centrifuge will stop rotating. After it completely stops, the door lock will release, the ready LED will illuminate and the door lock LED will go out. 9. Use the handle to open the cover. Release the clamp and remove the solder jar.

13 GUIDELINES: When placing the solder jar into the housing, REMEMBER TO CLAMP IT INTO PLACE. Failure to do so may cause the jar to fly out of the housing during mixing, resulting damage to the centrifuge. Also, the clamp will damage the inside of the SPS unit, in addition to the centrifuge. Bear in mind that there are no sensors to indicate that the clamp is secured. 2. Even though there is a 10 second delay for the door lock, it may release before the centrifuge has stopped spinning. In this case, look through the window on the cover and verify that the rotation has stopped before opening. 3. Also, if the SPS unit seems to vibrate excessively or seems to be making an unfamiliar sound, press the stop switch and inspect the inside, in addition to the centrifuge of the SPS series. 4. The SPS unit should be placed on a firm, leveled, and stable surface. 5. The SPS series has several safety devices built-in. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO OVERRIDE THESE DEVICES. You will VOID the warranty and jeopardize your own safety as well as others. 6. Although there seems to be plenty of space inside the SPS unit, DO NOT USE THIS SPACE FOR STORAGE. Accidents with serious damage will occur.

14 MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR: A. Storage When storing the SPS series unit, please observe the following: 1. Make sure that the power switch is OFF Clean the interior of the SPS unit. DO NOT LEAVE ANY RESIDUAL SOLDER PASTE NEAR ANY MOTORS, GEARS, BELTS OR ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS. Remember to disconnect the power cord from the power receptacle and store it with the SPS unit. 3. DO NOT USE ANY HARSH SOLVENTS FOR CLEANING THE SPS SERIES. Use Isopropyl alcohol or a mild detergent. 4. DO NOT PLACE ANY OBJECTS ON THE TOP PANEL OF THE SPS UNIT. 5. Store the SPS unit in a cool, dark, and dry environment. B. REPAIR AND WARRANTY The MALCOM SPS SERIES are manufactured using fine quality components and assemblies. Great care was taken during construction and adjustments and calibrations were done with precision instrumentation. Should you find that the operation of your SPS unit is not up to these standards or if there is a problem with its use, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REPAIR THE UNIT, doing this will VOID the warranty. 15 14 TROUBLESHOOTING: When experiencing difficulty with the operation of the SPS unit, consult this troubleshooting chart before considering repairs. However, if after repeated attempts to eliminate the problem are unsuccessful, then do not hesitate to contact MALCOM INSTRUMENTS CORPORATION for assistance. If the SPS unit is in a condition thought to be unsafe to operate or difficulties occur during operation; turn unit OFF and contact MALCOM. SITUATION CAUSE SOLUTION Top cover does not open. The SPS unit is mixing. Power switch is OFF. Power switch has just been turned ON, or the mixing has just finished. None of the above. The door lock is normally engaged during mixing. The door lock is normally engaged when the power is OFF. You must wait for 30 seconds after these two events before the door lock will release. Contact MALCOM INSTRUMENTS for assistance. The SPS unit does not turn ON. Power cord is not connected to the receptacle. Make sure both ends are securely attached. The SPS-2 or SPS-5 turns ON but the centrifuge does not turn. The fuse is blown. None of the above. Timer has not been set. The centrifuge is jammed. Check and replace with a 2 amp fuse. Contact MALCOM INSTRUMENTS for assistance. You must dial in the mixing time before the mixing can begin. Inspect the centrifuge. Do not operate the SPS unit if the centrifuge is damaged. While mixing, there is severe vibration or abnormal noise. In this situation, IMMEDIATELY PRESS STOP SWITCH OR TURN OFF POWER. None of the above. There is no paste in the jar or no jar is in the housing. The housing clamp is not securely engaged. None of the above. Contact MALCOM INSTRUMENTS for assistance. None of the above. It is not possible for the centrifuge to balance without paste in the housing. Use only if there is paste in the jar. The lamp must be secure. This should be double checked. Contact MALCOM INSTRUMENTS for assistance.
