3. FUEL: WOOD This stove burns wood only. The best results are obtained with dry wood. Logs sawn to size, cleaved and stored in a well-ventilated place (at least 1 year, preferably 2), give the best results because: - they produce considerably more heat than damp or green wood - they produce much less smoke than damp or green wood - they deposit less soot on the sides of the stove, the flue and window than damp or green wood Solid wood dries out at the rate of 1 cm per year. It is therefore important to cleave the wood to shorten the drying time. When a stove is completely filled with wood it gives off more heat for a longer period. In general, the harder the wood the better it burns. Never use waste, chippings, wood shavings and sawdust, tree bark or waste from chipboard, laminated wood or surface-treated wood. Do not cut the firewood too small. Very thin pieces of wood burn for only a very short period and are only suitable for lighting the stove. Allow large pieces with the normal dimension of about 25 cm to burn naturally. Large logs must be chopped small. ONLY DRY WOOD PREVENTS EMISSIONS OF HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCES WHEN BURNING! PLEASE NOTE! The stove is not a waste incinerator. The environment legislation expressly forbids the burning of waste in household fires. Not only is it environmentally unfriendly to use a solid fuel stove incorrectly to burn household waste, chemically treated wood waste or waste paper, or to use it as a private waste incineration plant, but it is also in breach of the emission laws and liable to punishment. The appliance is not suitable for burning liquid fuels. Besides creating high and unchecked air pollution, harmful combustion products and combustion residues also have a negative effect on the working and operating life of the stove and flue. This results in all kinds of defects and rapid wear, which may require expensive remediation and even replacement of the stove. The burning of unsuitable fuels can lead to a house fire of the type not covered by your fire insurance. 4. THE FLUE Before connecting the stove to the flue check that the dimensions and quality of the flue satisfy local regulations. The dimensions will need to be calculated. The flue must be cleaned every year and cleaned in accordance with local regulations. 5

What should I do in the event of a chimney fire? We advise the following steps in the case of a chimney fire: 1. Close the air supply 2. Inform the fire brigade. 3. Allow access to the cleaning hatches (e.g. cellar and loft). 4. Remove all combustibles from the flue. 5. When next using the stove have the flue and stove checked by an expert. 6. This expert should also trace the cause of the chimney fire and take steps to prevent it in future. Please note: If you set the stove to maximum output for ten minutes once a day this will help burn off tar deposits. This reduces the risk of a chimney fire, and at the same time helps keep the window clean. 5. COMBUSTION AIR As opposed to a normal fire, an SAEY insert stove uses little combustion air. For most homes the air coming in through the cracks and gaps of doors and windows is sufficient. However, in some well-insulated homes this air supply may not be sufficient. In such cases it will suffice to place a ventilation grille in the outside wall, as close as possible to the appliance. Under no circumstances should you allow air to come in from rooms or cellars containing volatile or inflammable substances. Saey insert stoves can only be used when the door of the insert stove is closed. For the air consumption of your particular insert stove see the table in point 2. Take account of other heating appliances or air outlet installations in the same area or on the same combustion air connection. If needs be the combustion air connection should be calculated, or a separate supply of combustion air installed outside. If 15 minutes after lighting the fire there is still a backdraft of flue gasses due to weather conditions (e.g. fog, storm, ) stop lighting the fire until the weather improves. Tip: be sure to take account of extractors which might be connected in the vicinity of the stove. These create underpressure, which can lead to disruptions in the supply of combustion air. The combustion gas which escapes is lethal and can damage the health of the people living in your home. 6. INSTALLATION When using cement inside or outside the chimney wait 7 days before using the stove, to allow the cement to dry out and prevent cracking during the drying process. The stove can give off quite a lot of smoke when used for the first time. These are not combustion gasses but smoke from the high heat-resistant paint which dries and bakes in. This smoke is not toxic but nonetheless it is recommendable to ventilate the room (for about 20 minutes). It is not recommended to touch the paint during this period. 6

All local regulations, including national and European standards, must be followed when installing the appliance. Only an appliance connected by an accredited installer guarantees compliance with the architectural and fire prevention regulations. These rules must be followed to ensure the correct and safe operation of the stove. The flue is extremely important in connecting the stove. Be sure to consult authorised specialists about the connection to ensure compliance with the respective regional building regulations. Bear the following in mind: The appliance can only be used when the door is closed. The doors of the insert stove must also be closed when the appliance is not in use. There must be an adequate supply of fresh air when the appliance is in use. Fire safety measures relating to combustible or temperature sensitive floor coverings: A fire-resistant, non-combustible covering (e.g. marble, tiles, special heat-resistant insulation, etc.) must be fitted under and around the insert stove. This must be of sufficient thickness. No combustibles or temperature sensitive objects must be stored under the appliance (e.g. firewood). Bear the following in mind as regards the diameter of the flue pipe: Do not narrow the diameter of the flue pipe. The flue pipe must be a perfect fit for the flue. If the flue draught is too big you will need to incorporate a draught regulator. The stove tube must not be smaller than the diameter of the flue; this impedes the upward pressure of the flue gasses. Flue connections to the various combustion points must not be opposite each other or at the same point, to prevent combustion gasses from not being discharged. Any two smoke outlet pipe connections must be at least 30 cm apart. The flue must not have too many connections this restricts upwards pressure. Consult your flue specialist! The flue must not supply empty air. Pay attention to closed flue hatches and cleaning hatches in the cellar or loft! The flue pipe must be safely connected to the connector pipe. The safety distances from combustibles or temperature sensitive objects given in the table of technical details must be applied. 7. INITIAL USE AND DIAGRAM It is important that you run your store in, in the same way you would a car - in WITH DUE CARE and PROGRESSIVELY! On your first days you should burn 1 to 2 kg of wood. A low flame and appropriate level of heat will allow stresses in the steel to dissipate and will allow the entire installation to dry out. Even after the appliance has been burning for a while it is best to avoid keeping fires lit for too long, or at too high an intensity. The small gain is heat is not worth the risk of damaging your appliance. 7

Pull the catch towards you to open the door and push it away from you to close it. The edges of the stove can become extremely hot. We recommend that you use heat resistant gloves. D Fig. 3 8

8. COMBUSTION PRINCIPLE This stove was developed for semi-slow burning. Loaded fully with wood and operating on a slow burn the stove will burn through the night with sufficient embers left over the next day to relight the fire. It is also possible to set the stove to a very slow burn (no flames). We do not recommend this for the following reasons: a) it causes insufficient burning which pollutes the air extremely heavily and unnecessarily b) this inadequate burning gives rise to extra smoke which deposits tar on the sides of the stove, the flue and the window when condensing. An accumulation of tar is not only unsightly but requires regular cleaning of the flue to prevent a chimney fire. If you are burning damp or green wood the combustion air regulator must be sufficiently open to obtain a good flame (see next page). HEAT EMISSION: the stove gives off two types of heat: a) heat emission by radiance. Heat radiates in a straight line from a hot surface. Besides the fire, the main sources of heat radiation are the hot ashes and the vermiculite sides covering the stove. This radiation is sent out into the room via the window and heats the immediate environment of the stove. b) heat emission by convection. Heat convection occurs when air in contact with a hot surface rises. Cold air enters the stove via the air inlet (A). This air passes over the bottom of the stove, then via the back to the ceiling of the combustion chamber before exiting via the hot air outlet (B). 9

SETTINGS Combustion air regulator (C) This controls the amount of air needed for combustion and therefore the heat produced. It is located on the top right-hand side of the door (see figs 1 and 2). Open: slide to the right Close: slide to the left The greater the supply, the more air is allowed into the stove, the more heat the stove produces, and the more wood is consumed. The more the supply of air is restricted, the less heat the stove produces, and the less wood the stove consumes. The regulator is at the top of the door, to create an "air-wash" system over the entire surface of the window. This helps keep the window cleaner for longer. C Fig. 4 LIGHTING "TOP-DOWN" BURNING The highest output is achieved by means of "top-down" burning. To achieve this, do not fill the stove in the traditional way. - Traditional way: what is meant here is laying down paper first, then kindling and finally large logs. With this method the load is, however, limited when lighting the fire. - "TOP-DOWN" burning: this is done by loading the large logs first, then the smaller pieces, and the paper on top. In this case combustion takes place from the top down and is known as "TOP-DOWN" burning. COLD START 1. Open the combustion air inlet fully (C). 2. Open the door. 3. Place the large logs carefully on the bottom. 4. Cover it with smaller logs, and on top of this lay firelighters or paper and finally kindling. 5. Light the fire and close the door. 6. Leave the combustion air inlet fully open until the wood is burning and the ashes glow. 7. Choose an appropriate burning regime and pick a setting. 10

RELOADING 1. Open the air inlet fully (C) 2. Open the door carefully. 3. Use the poker to spread the glowing logs over the bottom. 4. Place new logs on the embers. 5. Close the door and allow the fire to resume. 6. Select a setting. PLEASE NOTE! It is recommendable to load no higher than the vermiculite walls, or to load no more wood than the normal quantity given in table 2. POSSIBLE SETTINGS The stove has a higher output when the door is closed. In this way it produces heat in completely safety by radiation and convection. We can choose from 3 possible settings. A. Very high convection and radiation heat emission. High wood consumption. Open the primary air inlet completely to obtain a keen and fast flame. This setting should be used only to light the fire. Once the stove is hot, select another position (see B or C). B. Very high convection and radiation heat, moderate wood consumption with minimum pollution and maximum output. Gradually close the air regulator to maintain a good flame without burning intensely. At this setting a fully loaded appliance should be able to burn all night and still give off good convection heat. Using extremely dry wood and an appropriate flue draught, the window will stay clean for longer. C. Average convection and radiation heat - low wood consumption. Close the air regulator until the flame almost extinguishes. In this way the stove will burn all night (depending on the flue draught) but the window will become dirty because combustion is not complete. The choice of setting depends on the choice of capacity and the flue draught. The flue draught can also be dependent on weather conditions. To remind you, the more open the air regulator, the greater the radiation but with less heat convection, and, more particularly, greater wood consumption. For maximum heat and output choose setting "B". 9. CLEANING 11

It is recommended to clean the stove when it is cold. WINDOW In most cases the window "Air wash" system and the vermiculite covering on the walls help keep the window clean for longer. However, if the window becomes dirty, you should: 1) open the door 2) use a spray or cleaning gel on the inside of the window. Apply with care because most of these products are caustic. 3) allow to penetrate 4) wipe away the tar using a damp cloth, then polish with paper or a cloth. Pressing the damp cloth in the ashes first may help remove some of the more stubborn deposits. The ashes have a scouring effect. NEVER USE CAUSTIC PRODUCTS WHEN CLEANING THE APPLIANCE REMOVING THE ASHES The stove must be cleaned on a regular basis. This can be done using the shovel provided, which works as a shovel or scraper if turned around. Please note, leaving a bed of ashes on the bottom (± 1 cm) improves combustion combustion in the ashes. 1. Open the door. 2. Use the poker supplied to push glowing embers to one side for later use to relight the fire. 3. Push ashes to the other side. 4. Remove the ashes from the stove (with the shovel) 5. Spread the glowing embers evenly over the bottom of the stove. 6. Place new logs on the glowing embers. PAINTED FRONT Dust the remaining ashes from the painted parts using a soft hand brush or cotton cloth. Never wash the stove with water! 10. MAINTENANCE RESPRAY The appliance can be resprayed with a heat resistant paint, which is available at your point of sale. Do not use any other type of paint. Only respray the appliance when it is cold. Before spraying be sure to cover all parts of the stove that do not need to be sprayed (window and fireplace, for example), and to degrease any parts to be resprayed. Carefully follow the instructions on the spray can. 12

CLEANING THE FLUE The flue must be swept every year. To do this the smoke damper must be removed from the appliance. To remove the smoke damper follow the instructions below with care. How to remove the smoke damper 1) After opening the door you can remove baffle plate D. To do this, place your hand on catch C and push the back of the catch upwards. Catch C at the back will now have come free from smoke damper E and you can move it towards you. The catch can now be removed from the smoke damper. See photos 1 to 5. Please note: Catch C for the smoke damper has a front ( A ) and back ( B ). Remember these directions when reassembling. Baffle plate D also has a front ( A ) and back ( B ) which you will also need to bear in mind. 2) You can now remove baffle plate D by raising the left-hand side and lowering the righthand side, so that the right-hand side can be turned to the front and the plate removed. See photos 6 to 9. 3) Smoke damper F is removed by sliding it to the back and pulling down. See photo 10. 4) To reassemble the whole work in reverse order. Be sure when reassembling that you first mount the smoke damper operating shaft F (photo 12) in the guide hole G (photo 6) before placing the grooves of smoke damper E over the fixings. Now shift smoke damper E to the front to prevent it from dropping. 13

14

BROKEN WINDOW The pyroceramic window is solidly made and will not crack through heat. However, it can be broken through a lack of care. Read and apply the tips below to avoid damage. 1. Never allow logs to protrude from the front or the front log will break the window. 2. When filling the stove with logs, make sure than none can roll into the window. 3. Do not press unnecessarily hard when cleaning the window. 4. When using for the first time check the window tension (new appliance and on initial use after the summer). There should be a little play in the window - if not, remove any stress before using the appliance for the first time. If your window does break, consult your installer. REPLACEMENT OF A BROKEN WINDOW (for the installer) 1. Remove the broken glass from the door. 2. Lift the replacement window and place it in the top rim of the door, the bottom edge of the window falls into the bottom rim of the door. 3. Push the window from top to bottom against the door seal. In some cases it may be necessary to completely replace the seal. 15

11. TROUBLESHOOTING Abnormal operation is usually the result of incorrect usage. If you are of the opinion that something is not working as it should, check the following. If you are unable to resolve the problem, then contact your installer.
