2 SAFETY NOTES & GENERAL SERVICING ADVICE 1. This Manual is NOT intended as a comprehensive repair/maintenance guide to the appliance. It should ONLY be used by suitably qualified persons having technical competence, applicable product knowledge, and suitable tools and tests equipment. 2. In the interest of consumer safety, we would advise that persons not suitably qualified must not attempt to repair domestic electrical appliances. If you are in the slightest doubt we strongly recommend that if you are resident in the UK you consult General Domestic Appliances Service (Tel: ), or your Electrical retailer. For all other customers, consult your local Distributor or other authorised service agent. 3. Earth Continuity and Insulation Resistance checks must proceed servicing. 4. WARNING: ALWAYS ISOLATE THE HEATER FROM THE ELECTRICAL SUPPLY/SUPPLIES before undertaking any maintenance work. As Tele-switching of off peak supplies becomes more common, and the times at which off peak supplies are available varies, it is essential that the off peak consumer unit as well as the adjacent isolator switch are both switched off prior to servicing the heater. 5. Personal safety precautions must be taken to protect against accidents caused by sharp edges on metal and plastic parts. 6. After servicing the appliance must be rechecked for electrical safety. 7. INSTALLATION WALL FIXING: - The heater must ALWAYS be mounted against and fixed to a wall, as it will not stand up by itself. A detachable bracket is provided for screwing to the wall. Full details are shown in the respective Assembly Instructions supplied with the product. Different wall constructions will require different inserts. The fibre rawl plugs within the fixing kit supplied with the heater are for solid brick and concrete walls only. For other wall types seek specialist advice. NOTE: - Inserts incorporating plastic may be subject to shrinkage behind a warm storage heater and are therefore NOT recommended. The heater must be connected to the fixed wiring via a double pole-isolating switch having a contact separation of 3 mm and in accordance with the I.E.E. regulations currently in force and in accordance with the local code of practice, the installation should be carried out by a competent electrician. Cable having a MINIMUM T rating of 85 C must be used. NOTE: - Once installed, the heater must not be moved unless the storage core has been disassembled. The heater is very heavy and it would be dangerous to try to move it fully loaded. In addition, damage to the thermal insulation would occur if a heater were moved fully loaded. 3

4 SETTING THE CONTROLS NOTE: - The Bathroom Heaters 79331S and 79334S do not have controls that can be adjusted by the customer. These heaters controls are factory preset. The controls for 79341S, 79351S, 79361S, 79344S, 79354S and 79364S are located under the flap at the right-hand corner of the top panel. To adjust the controls on the heater use a coin and engage it in the slot provided on the top surface of the knob. AUTOMATIC INPUT CONTROL After 48 hours of running at maximum control settings (Input on 6 Output on 4) the heater can be adjusted to operate at its optimum performance. 1 In the early afternoon to early evening, say between the hours of 2 pm to 8 pm, turn the input control knob fully anti-clockwise until the minimum stop position is achieved, then turn the knob slowly clockwise until an audible click is heard leave the control at this setting. This will allow the heater to take an overnight charge. 2 On the following evening, (at around the time you go to bed) judge the temperature of the room (not the heater). If the room is warm enough, carefully touch the top of the heaters side panel, this should be cool to the touch (i.e. heater discharged). If the side panel is still hot or quite warm, carefully reduce the Input Control Knob setting by a very small amount. On the following evening again judge whether the room is warm enough when you retire to bed together with the temperature at the top of the side panel. If however when you retire to bed after initially setting the Input Control to the click the room is too cool and the temperature at the top of the side panel is co ld, increase by a very small amount the Input Control setting. Repeat as necessary over the next two or three days. Remember, you need sufficient heat to be stored overnight in the core when it has finished charging to last through the day, so that by the end of the day virtually all of the heat has been used up. 3 Persevere with this procedure until you are satisfied with the temperature of your rooms. Due to the nature of the Auto Heater, once set up correctly, the input control can be left undisturbed and the heater will charge each night automatically following exactly the outdoor weather conditions, even to the point of off when summer arrives. The heater surfaces will of course vary according to the weather and the amount of heat stored. Because of variations in the siting for different heaters in rooms, each heater needs to be set individually and the finally chosen input control settings may be different in different rooms. MANUALLY - ADJUSTED INPUT CONTROL This control knob is numbered 1-6, setting 1 giving the least overnight charge and setting 6 giving the maximum overnight charge. It would be a mistake to follow the varying outdoor weather changes by daily adjustment of the knob and it is best, rather, to follow the seasonal changes. Start in autumn, say with a setting of 1-3 and gradually increase the setting as the winter comes on, frosts etc. reverse the pattern as winter turns to spring. OUTPUT CONTROL (common to both Manual and Automatic Heaters) This is the left-hand control knob under the flap. The setting of this will vary the rate at which the heat is delivered to the room. Low settings will keep more in the heater during the day, saving it for the evening. NOTE: - The higher the setting during the day, the less heat saved for the evening and vice versa. 4

6 WARNING ALWAYS ISOLATE THE HEATER FROM THE ELECTRICAL SUPPLY/SUPPLIESbefore undertaking any maintenance work. OUTER PANELS NOTE: - The Front & Top Panel are removed together 1. To remove the front/top panel, release the screws along the bottom edge of the front panel. 2. Remove the screws fixing the top panel to the rear of the heater 3. Lift the control flap and remove the control knobs 4. Ease the front/top panel forward and up in a continuous movement unhooking the top edge from beneath the wall fixing angle. NOTE the two tags that fit into each side panel. 5. Remove the screws securing the top panel to the front panel. 6. The side panels can be removed and replaced if damaged. This should only be carried out when the bricks have been removed and the heater taken off the wall. With the heater off the wall remove the rear heat shield to access the side panel rear fixing screws. INPUT THERMOSTATS NOTE: - The manual heaters are fitted with a single combined thermostat and safety cut-out. The automatic heaters are fitted with an additional automatic input (twin sensing) thermostat. 1. Remove the front and top panels (see OUTER PANEL). 2. Hinge the thermostat cover to one side. 3. Carefully loosen the screws securing the wiring connections before removing the screws that secure the thermostat to the mounting bracket. NOTE: - When refitting excessive pressure must not be applied to the screws securing the ring terminals. 4. The twin sensing thermostat has push on wiring connections carefully remove, remove the screws securing the thermostat to the mounting bracket. The capillary must be removed from the bracket at the bottom of the heater at the rear. HEATING ELEMENTS DISMANTLING PROCEDURE WARNING: - Allow the heater sufficient time to cool before any attempt is made to remove the elements. Care must be taken when removing the removing the inner panel. The bricks may be unstable. 1. Remove the outer front panel (see OUTER PANEL). NOTE the bottom edge of the inner front panel is located behind the chassis lip. 2. Carefully remove the inner front panel once the all the screws have been released. The front insulation must be handled with care and should be supported by the inner front panel and set carefully aside. 3. Remove the front row of bricks to gain access to the elements. 4. The element can be removed when the screws securing the tail ends in the connector blocks are slackened. 5. When replacing the elements it is essential to ensure that the element is securely pushed into its correct location and the screws are tightened firmly on the tails. 6

7 RESETTING THE SAFETY CUT-OUT 1. Remove the front panel (see OUTER PANEL). 2. The thermostat with the integral safety cut-out is located at the right hand end of the inner top panel. Pull the right hand front edge of the thermostat cover and swing it to the left this will allow access to the reset lever on the thermostat. Press down the little tab (reset lever). A click should heard as the cut-out resets. BI-METAL ASSEMBLY (MANUAL HEATERS) HYDRAULIC OUTPUT CONTROL (AUTO HEATERS) 1. Remove the front and top panels (see OUTER PANEL). 2. Remove the screws securing the control mounting bracket. Set this assembly complete with thermostats to one side (on Manual Heaters being careful n ot to misplace the output cam). Remove the 2 fixing screws and replace the respective assembly as required 3. Hydraulic Output ONLY. Unclip the sensing phial from the clip positioned bottom of the heater at the rear. NOTE this control is factory preset and cannot be adjusted on site. 4. Refit the control bracket ensuring that the output cam is correctly located. Correct setting of the bi-metal can only be carried out when the heater / bi-metal is cold. SETTING THE BI-METAL (MANUAL HEATERS) S Turn the output knob to number 3 (i.e. flat of D towards and parallel with the wall) S & 79364S Turn the output knob to number 3 (there is no simple D equivalent position). NOTE: - Do not set below 3. If you cannot judge this setting then err towards safety and turn the control knob to 4, which would result in the flap closing slightly sooner with a lower grille temperature and the possibility of a slight reduction in charge acceptance. 2. With the cam in the correct position, the bi-metal screw should be adjusted until the bi-metal assembly is JUST TOUCHING the flap, not opening the flap. The antilever/bi-metal assembly must be supported against the pressure required to turn the screw. 3. Apply threadlocking solution. 7
